Μπορεί σε κάθε μέρος της Ελλάδας να γιορτάζεται με διαφορετικό τρόπο, το Κερκυραϊκό όμως ξεχωρίζει για τις μοναδικές εκδηλώσεις που λαμβάνουν χώρα μέσα σε μια ατμόσφαιρα κατάνυξης και με σκηνικό την πανέμορφη Παλιά πόλη της Κέρκυρας. Αν και εορτασμοί γίνονται καθ' όλη τη Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα, η αποκορύφωση τους συμβαίνει τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή και το Μεγάλο Σάββατο. Τη Μεγάλη Παρασκευή το απόγευμα, από κάθε εκκλησία της πόλης εκτός από αυτήν του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνα -του προστάτη της πόλης, βγαίνουν επιτάφιοι, συνοδευόμενοι από μουσικές μπάντες και χορωδίες. Λίγο πριν τα μεσάνυχτα, ξεκινάει και ο πιο σημαντικός της βραδιάς, αυτός της Μητρόπολης. Κάτω από το αχνό φως των μωβ λαμπών -που λόγω πένθους αντικατέστησαν τα άσπρα φώτα των δρόμων, οι τρεις μουσικές μπάντες της πόλης παίζουν λυπητερές μελωδίες όπως το Adagio στα στενά σοκάκια, που είναι γεμάτα κόσμο. Την επόμενη μέρα συνεχίζονται οι εκδηλώσεις με τον επιτάφιο του Αγίου Σπυρίδωνα, όπου οι μουσικές μπάντες με τα αστραφτερά κράνη, παίζουν Hamlet, Galde de la Crime και την Ηρωική του Μπετόβεν. Πριν τις έντεκα, όλοι οι πιστοί και οι τουρίστες που βρίσκονται στο δρόμο, ψάχνουν να βρουν καταφύγιο κάτω από τα βόλτα των κτηρίων, γιατί με το που χτυπήσουν οι καμπάνες, οι Κερκυραίοι θα πετάξουν πήλινες στάμνες με νερό από τα παράθυρα. Όταν βραδιάσει θα μαζευτούν στη Μεγάλη Πλατεία (όπως ονομάζεται η πλατεία του νησιού), για να γιορτάσουν την Ανάσταση. Με τον παπά να λέει «Δεύτε λάβετε φως», όλοι αγκαλιάζονται και εύχονται «Χριστός Ανέστη», κάτω από τον φωτισμένο από πυροτεχνήματα ουρανό. Είναι υπέροχη αυτή η θάλασσα από τα τρεμάμενα φωτάκια των αναμμένων λαμπάδων που γεμίζει κάθε χρόνο την πλατεία του νησιού; μια εικόνα αξέχαστη… ----Formal English---- Easter in Corfu When someone refers to Easter, he immediately thinks of Easter in Corfu. It might be that in each part of Greece it is celebrated in a different way; however, the Corfiot one stands out for the unique celebrations that take place in an atmosphere of devoutness and with beautiful scenery in the Old Town of Corfu. Even though events happen throughout the Holy week, their culmination occurs on Great Friday and Great Saturday. On the evening of Great Friday, from every church of the town aside from Saint Spyridon's—the town's protector—epitaphs go out, accompanied by music bands and choruses. Just before midnight begins the most important event of the whole night—the metropolitan one. Under the pale light of the purple lamps, which replaced the white lights of the street because of mourning, the town's three music bands perform sad melodies such as the "Adagio" at the narrow alleys, which are filled with people. The following day the celebrations continue with the epitaph of Saint Spyridon, where the music bands with the shiny helmets perform "Hamlet," "Galde de la Crime," and Beethoven's "Heroica." Before eleven o'clock, believers and tourists who are in the streets search for refuge under the buildings' arcades since Corfiots will throw clay pots from the windows when the bells start ringing. When it gets dark, everybody will gather at the Big Square (as the island's square is called) to celebrate the Resurrection. With the priest saying "Come and get the light," people hug and wish to each other "Christ is resurrected" underneath the sky lit by the fireworks.
