Berättelsen tar sin början i ett litet samhälle, strax efter att ett ungt par har gift sig. De får svåra problem med vädret och sina grödor. Familjen är så hungrig att parets äldsta barn stjäl mat som inte är säker att ätas och dör följaktligen. Detta leder till att familjen beslutar sig för att tillsammans med andra bondefamiljer att emigrera till USA. Jan Troell directed the film, which came out in 1971 and is based on two novels by Vilhelm Moberg. The novels were the first in the Emigrants Suite series. Liv Ullmann and Max von Sydow led the cast, which also included Monica Zetterlund, Allan Edwall, and Eddie Axberg and re-appeared the following year in the sequel The New Land. The story starts in a small town in the southern part of Sweden not long after a young couple has married. They end up in dire straits because of a chain of disasters related to the weather and the quality of the land they are trying to farm. Their family is so hungry that the couple's eldest child sneaks food that isn't safe to eat and consequently dies. This prompts them to join other farm families in emigrating to the U.S. Much of the film focuses on the journey by ship to get to the U.S., which all imagine as a "promised land" where they can prosper. Not everyone who steps onto the ship will step off it again. The film first shows the hardships and deaths of a 10-week voyage that the characters hope will lead them to a better place.
