Summary: In the beginning, Congress supported the interest of Insurance Policyholders through ERSIA Legislation. The Department of Labor (which helps oversee enforcement) defines ERISA Legislation as, "The Employee Retirement Income Security Act or ERISA is a Federal law that sets standards of protection for individuals in most voluntarily established, private-sector retirement plans."  This includes benefits such as Short-Term and Long-Term Disability and Life Insurance Plans.
