#030: The Power of Minimalism

Live Life With Purpose with Adam Smith show

Summary: Minimalism is a concept that isn’t looked at often, because people want more and they want it now. Most people find themselves in a busy lifestyle and want a way out, but they keep adding more. Very rarely does someone take the time to think about what it is that could bring balance back into their life. The best answer to a busy schedule is a new lifestyle and mindset, and minimalism offers both of these things.
Minimalism is defined as a style or technique (as in music, literature, or design) that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity, but what if we took this idea and made it a way of life for ourselves? Minimalism creates a simpler way of life for people who will adopt this idea. The minimalist lifestyle carries over into every area of life and becomes part of everything we do. We all need to adopt this mindset now, so we can better prepare for the future.
We are all busy right now, and if we keep committing to things past what we can actually handle, we will eventually become over-burdened and stressed out. Whatever happened to a simpler way of life? When we begin bringing back a simple balance to our lives, it spills out into what we can do for others. This simplicity and minimalism brings more time into our lives for others.
The main benefit of minimalism is that it forces us to take a step back and take a good, hard look at our lives. Doing this also reminds us to enjoy the life we are already living out. So, where does implementing minimalism into our lives begin? It starts as a way of life.
If it is easier for you to conquer physical things first, and then go onto tackling the other ways you can implement minimalism into your life, then do it that way. You can start with the physical clutter that you see on daily basis around your home and office. Getting rid of things frees up not only physical space, but mental space to think as well. This is a great way to free up your mind to think about more important things.
Once you have your physical space where you want it to be, then begin focusing on the things that take up your time and your mental space. How can you get rid of things in your schedule to enjoy your time more with your family and also spend more time diving into the lives of other people more often? How can you lessen your commitment to those things that either don’t interest you or aren’t productive for you to be doing in the first place?
There is a balance to saying “yes” to things in life and being over-committed, and it is found in minimalism. Minimalism ties you to less possessions of this world and helps you focus on what matters most, which will always be people.

Take the time to see what you can cut out today to create a better way of life starting, today.
