Learn why @ExitTicket is a great way to track student progress and gather feedback

The TeacherCast App Spotlight show

Summary: Jeff sits down with Dan Adiletta to discuss how ExitTicket is being used worldwide to track student progress and gather powerful feedback.
About ExitTicket
ExitTicket is more than just a simple voting/polling clicker or interactive student response system. ExitTicket was created by Leadership Public Schools (LPS) in the San Francisco Bay area to address a critical issue facing many schools in America: too many students are entering high school substantially below grade level. In LPS's case, a high number of 9th graders enter at a 4th and 5th grade comprehension level. To stack the odds against an LPS student even higher: California ranks 49th in spending per pupil and 79% of LPS's students qualify for free and reduced lunch with many coming from low-income urban neighborhoods. 85% of LPS students have parents who've never attended college.

In order to overcome this problem, LPS started with a hybrid mix of various technologies and approaches, including using ‘clicker' based voting/polling systems. It wasn't enough, and only yielded an average 1.5 year gain. In order to get them to ‘college ready,' LPS had to accelerate a student's education by 8 years within their four years of high school.

The ExitTicket concept was created from the simple need to massively kickstart and accelerate student growth. To solve this problem, the ExitTicket design team parked themselves in a classroom for 6 weeks and developed ExitTicket directly with teachers and students in real time. ExitTicket then expanded to more teachers, classrooms and more schools across the LPS network. At the end of two years of intense research and development, LPS students were benchmarking an average MAP 2.6 grade level gain in a single year by using ExitTicket. This substantial achievement paved the way to make the pivotal change from a “College Ready” focus, to a “97% College Bound” result for all LPS students.

How does LPS and ExitTicket do it? ExitTicket’s power lies in its tight integration between real time student response technologies and impactful instructional strategies. It teaches students that wrong answers lead to learning and that micro-successes lead to mastery, empowering them to own their academic progress. It empowers teachers by giving them real-time data to realistically do what they have always wanted – differentiate instruction and provide immediate intervention for all students. It changes teaching because it has been designed directly by teachers to greatly reduce grading and give them more time to invest in planning high quality questioning and differentiated support.
Links of Interest
http://twitter.com/exitticket
http://facebook.com/exitticket
http://exitticket.org/toolkit

About Us Video
Why We Created ExitTicket: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K6xnqmuYDw&list=PL_JS5ztwk2L9mJpvMH68U078RU99nVQpn&index=2
About our Guest
Daniel Adiletta is a licensed teacher with experience implementing 1:1 programs. While guiding an iPad initiative and teaching Computer Science, Adiletta went through numerous response systems until he found ExitTicket. It was exactly what he was looking for and he told his colleagues about it via YouTube. Now he's a part of the ExitTicket team.
