Summary: The northern transportation system is famous, partly because of its winter roads. Each year, crews fan out across the territory to build roads on ice and frozen tundra. They start by plowing the path of the road, removing the insulating snow. Then they build layers of hard-packed snow or ice into hundreds of kilometers of highway that can handle the largest trucks.
