#64 – Sweetwater Second Helping IPA & And So I Watch You From Afar

1 Beer 1 Song show

Summary: This is a bittersweet episode. We drink Second Helping IPA from Sweetwater Brewing in Atlanta. The sweet part is that all the profits from this beer will go to The Giving Kitchen, a foundation whose "mission is to provide crisis grants to members of Atlanta’s restaurant community facing unanticipated hardship." The bitter part is that TGK was founded after the massive outpouring of support for Ryan Hidinger following his diagnosis of stage 4 gall bladder cancer in late 2012. We originally discussed the Team HIDI campaign a year ago on episode 37. Sadly, Ryan passed on January 9th, 2014. As for music, bear with me here: Several years ago, Muss & Turner's had live bands play at their annual birthday celebration. One of those bands was Sorry No Ferrari, an Atlanta band that broke up in 2011. At the aforementioned birthday shindig, I remember Ryan telling me how much he liked Sorry No Ferrari, and then we watched them for a minute and quietly nodded along. FAST FORWARD: And So I Watch You From Afar released a new album last year and I have wanted to review one of their songs for a while. Not sure why it took so long, honestly. ANYWAY, Sorry No Ferrari had a noodley, post-rock sound and I think there are enough similarities in ASIWYFA's sound to make it worth mentioning. There. See how I tied everything together? I am a master wordsmith. [Side note: On the episode, I mentioned that I thought ASIWYFA are from England. Turns out they are from Ireland. Same thing, right?] Ryan will be greatly missed. He left a hell of an imprint on everyone he encountered and he left a hell of a legacy in the Atlanta restaurant scene and beyond. Get busy living.
