Youthwise: Healing from Sexual Abuse

Thrive Talk Radio show

Summary: Every 2 minutes someone in the U.S. is the victim of sexual assault, with more than 207,750 victims each year.  More than 17 million people have been the victim of sexual abuse of some kind and most victims knew their perpetrator.  We take on this painful topic to help young victims know that they can recover, that they are not to blame, and there are resources available to help them.  We also want to let young people know how to keep safe from attack, wherever they are.  We will have two very courageous young women on the show with us.  Teri Taylor is a young woman in her 30s from New Jersey, who has healed from sexual abuse as a youth and has gone on to publish her story in a book to help others find hope.  Our youth guest, 20, is from Florida and is recovering from her abuse as a thriving young woman.  She was able to send her assailant to jail, and deal with his release.  Both women will share their stories of strength and how to help other young women and men protect themselves from attack.  We invite listeners to call in and share their stories of overcoming abuse or to call for information on how to get out of an abusive situation.  We will share resources such as hotlines and how to support a friend in an abusive situation.
