The first half-hour of Episode 3 features extended excerpts from Mark Ritts's invaluable cruising guide, "Cast Off for Catalina." While on a cruise to Annapolis, MD on the Chesapeake Bay, show host Tory Salvia introduces extended excerpts from this popular video about a well-known southern California cruising destination. In "Cast Off for Catalina," you sail from Marina Del Ray in Los Angeles out 25-miles to Catalina's picturesque Avalon Harbor. Along the way, you learn about making proper preparations for sea and planning a safe voyage to the island. Throughout the show, you get tips on how to make the most of your visit from Bill McNeely, author of the authoritative book, Cruising Catalina Island. On arrival in Avalon, you get personal instructions from the Harbor Master on how to properly secure a vessel to a Catalina-style mooring, then you take a tour of the quaint resort town. Departing Avalon, you circumnavigate the island, learning the pros and cons of available anchorages along the way. You stop for shore leave at Two Harbors, the other popular island locale, get an underwater tour of the famous kelp beds and marine life, then complete your Catalina circumnavigation with a return to Avalon. You can purchase the unabridged version of "Cast Off for Catalina" at TheSailingChannel.TV/cast_off. For the second half-hour, host Tory Salvia, introduces "Distant Shores," the highly acclaimed half-hour sailing/travel/adventure series produced by Canadian sailors, Paul and Sheryl Shard. In episode three, we join the Shards aboard their Classic 37 sloop, "Two Step," as they begin their exploration of Istanbul from their base in Atakoy Marina. They visit the Grand Bazaar, one of the world's oldest and largest covered markets. With local friends, the Shards learn about Turkish fashion, food, and night life. You can purchase the two-volume DVD set of Distant Shores: Greek Islands & Turkey at thesailingchannel.tv/distant_shores.
