Summary: John Brown Historian, Jean Libby! Known as the “Emperor,” Shields Green played a role in John Brown’s Raid on Harper's Ferry. As a young man he escaped through the Underground Railroad network to Rochester, New York, where Frederick Douglass provided shelter and introduced him to radical abolitionists.  He accompanied Frederick Douglass to Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, where the great abolitionist spoke to John Brown for the last time. Brown was unsuccessful in convincing Douglass to join him in the raid; he did, however, recruit the young Green.
