Modern Survival Needs 5-Part Series: Part 1 – Water

The Permaculture Life show

Summary: In this series of multi-part posts, I’m going to go more into depth about each of the 5 modern survival needs. I’ve talked briefly about these before, but I think it’s important to understand that they may be needs in more ways than first come to mind. But why the survival needs? In almost any natural, or human-created living system, it’s basic needs can usually be broken down into these five areas. These areas are water, food, shelter, security, and energy. I’m going to start with water, because I think in most circumstances it’s one of, if not the most important need. Here in the arid West it’s no surprise (well, I guess it’s surprising to some people, much of Colorado is desert, and gets less than 12 in. of rain/year), but water is very important. Without it, the communities dependent on it could not have grown as they did. Before settlers, Native Americans did not extend dwellings far from the river given the summer heat and winter dryness, because it was so necessary for life. Most cities developed along a river or near some body of water. Also, it can be an important means of travel. Listen today as I talk about The importance of water in the natural world – all living things need water Why you need to store water What the recommended quantities are, and why you need even more for young, elderly, or sick family members Why “bugging out” with enough water is difficult Why clean water will stay clean unless it gets dirty Water storage container options Why the above-ground pool can be better than an in-ground pool
