STP 002 – Three-Act Structure

The Story Telling Podcast » STP Podcast Episodes show

Summary: The second episode of the Story Telling Podcast is out! CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE Garrett began the episode by correcting an omission, which was crediting the guys over at the Self-Publishing Podcast for the awesome work they've been doing for nearly a year now. Their podcast was the basis of and inspiration behind the Story Telling Podcast, and our format is virtually a carbon copy of theirs. Without their advice, Garrett would never have started writing OR podcasting in the first place (so either you have them to thank, or you have them to blame). Plus, in their last episode they gave him (good-natured) crap for ripping them off without even a credit. THREE-ACT STRUCTURE We discussed Three-Act Structure, a generally applicable but often maligned storytelling device. Many people (including Cristal) tend to denigrate Three-Act Structure, saying it's not widely applicable and only in stories if you really look for it, and "bend the rules," so to speak, of what an Act actually is. Garrett argued against it, saying Three-Act structure is a vital storytelling component in most great stories. An inordinate amount of time was spent talking about Pulp Fiction.
