De band bereidt zich voor op een grote wedstrijd, maar onderlinge verschillen leiden tot ruzies en gevechten tussen de leden van band. Uiteindelijk splitsen ze in twee afzonderlijke banden, en beide bands besluiten om op hun eigen aan de wedstrijd deel te nemen. Dezelfde componist schrijft eigenlijk twee verschillende stukken voor beide bands, en in het begin horen we twee totaal verschillende stukken. Uiteraard doen zich een aantal problemen voor in de loop van het verhaal, maar alles samen loopt het uit in beide bands die op hetzelfde ogenblik op het podium eindigen. Ze beginnen ieder met het spelen van hun eigen stukje muziek, maar tijdens het spelen, realiseren ze zich dat beide delen elkaar aanvullen en bedoeld zijn om samen te worden gespeeld. De band, herenigd door deze voorstelling, eindigt met het winnen van de wedstrijd. Deze film is grotendeels een komedie, en een van de meest amusante delen van de film is de triangelspeler. De 25-koppige band splitst in twee banden van 12 elk, en de triangel speler weet niet bij welke band te gaan. Op het einde komen we te weten dat hij wist wat de wedstrijd inhield en waar alles wat ze meemaakten echt om draaide. Fanfare ontving een nominatie voor een Gouden Palm voor beste film op het Filmfestival van Cannes. ----Formal English---- Fanfare The 1958 Dutch film Fanfare is considered to be a landmark in the history of the Dutch film industry. Jan Blokker and Bert Haanstra wrote the screenplay, and the movie stars Bernard Droog, Hans Kaart, and Ineke Brinkman. In the beginning of the film, we meet the members of a brass band located in the village of Lower Wiede. The band is preparing for a major competition, but differences result in arguments and fighting among the band members. They end up splitting into two separate bands, and both bands decide to enter the contest on their own. A single composer actually writes two different pieces for both of the bands, and at first we hear two entirely different pieces. Of course a number of problems arise throughout the course of the story, but all of those issues result in both bands ending up on stage at the same time. Both begin playing their own piece of music, but as they play, we realize that both parts complement each other and are meant to be played together. The band, reunited through this performance, ends up winning the contest. This film is largely a comedy, and one of the most amusing parts of the film is the triangle player. The 25-member band splits into two bands of 12 people each, and the triangle player doesn't know which way to go. In the end, we learn that he knew what the contest and everything they were experiencing was really all about.
