Season 3 Episode 6 – My guest is Kholofelo Kugler. Kholofelo is a Counsel at the Advisory Centre on WTO Law (ACWL) in Geneva, Switzerland, where she advises developing country Members and least-developed countries (LDCs) on all issues relating to WTO law. Kholofelo is originally from South Africa, and in our conversation, she talks about how she ended up in law school and how at one point she thought of becoming a diplomat. Her career eventually led to her getting involved with international economic law and Trade. She eventually made her way to the World Trade Institute for the MILE program and has been at the ACWL for over five years. She also talks about writing and editing a book on Trade from the South African perspective and her role as co-founder of the Trade Policy Exchange. Season 3 Episode 5 - My guest is Ismael Ortiz, Minister, Deputy Permanent Representative at the Mission of Mexico to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. Ismael is a good friend and a colleague that has been working in International Trade and the WTO practically since its inception. He has been stationed in Geneva for over a decade, which is when I first met him. In our conversation, he talks about studying economics and his journey into the public sector, which was initially meant to be for a few years and has continued throughout his professional career, primarily because of his public service vocation. We then move on to a nitty-gritty discussion on the evolution of the WTO, balancing diplomacy and innovation, the constant negotiation with Capital-based colleagues, and he finally offers some potential avenues to progress in the ongoing WTO negotiations. Suja is a fascinating individual who has been working in international trade since the GATT Secretariat days. In our conversation, she talks about having a very International upbringing and how that shaped her into eventually getting a job at the GATT Secretariat. She tells us how she experienced the GATT transition to the WTO and how International Trade has evolved over the years. Our conversation may become a bit technical, but only because Market Access is a very technical subject. Season 3 Episode 3 - My guest is Marco M. Aleman, Assistant Director General at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). In my conversation with Marco, we cover a lot of ground. He starts by talking about growing up in Colombia and how his interest in public service had its roots back then. He tells us how he got interested in the law and Intellectual Property, a new subject at the time. Marco describes his experience working for Colombia’s Industrial Property Office and how he eventually got to Geneva and WIPO via Munich and the Max Plank Institute. From there, we discuss his new role at WIPO, which focuses on innovation ecosystems and assisting SMEs in commercializing IP. Season 3 Episode 2 - My guest is Angel Villalobos Rodríguez, Ambassador of Mexico to the World Trade Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, and former Undersecretary of International Trade Negotiations and Director General of Foreign Investment at the Ministry of Economy in Mexico. Season 3 Episode 1 - My guest is Edward Kwakwa, Assistant Director General at WIPO. This is the first episode of our third season. The second season did not go as planned, and I ended up recording very few episodes. That is something that I really want to fix this season. To kickstart it, I am honored to host Edward Kwakwa. We have been meaning to have this conversation for some time now, and I am delighted we finally managed to sit down and talk. Edward has had a pretty International life, born in Ghana and then traveling to Canada and the US to study. He worked in a US law firm for some time and eventually made his way to Geneva. In Geneva, he was supposed to be here for one year but ended up staying for good. He has worked in many organizations in his professional experience, including the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Trade Organization. In our conversation, he explains the role of WIPO and delves a bit into his new portfolio, which includes many global challenges such as climate change and global health. Season 2 Episode 4 - My guest is Manuel Sanchez, the CEO, and founder of Enloya, he is also a very good friend. Although we have known each other for many years, I tried to explore some new ground during our conversation. There are certainly many parallels between his professional life and mine, so hopefully, this turned out to be insightful and interesting. Manuel talks about how he got interested in International Public Law, and specifically Economic Law, pretty early on and how this brought him to Geneva. He also shares his experience working for the Mexican Government, mainly in Anti-Dumping proceedings. After his LL.M. at Georgetown, he made his way back to Geneva, where he worked at the WTO, and also happened to be the point in time where I met him. After this, if it wasn’t interesting yet, he got bit by the start-up bug and he is currently trying to balance it out with his Ph.D. studies. I hope you enjoy it. Season 1 Episode 14 - In this episode we talk to filmmaker Luke Lorentzen. He presented his new documentary “Midnight Family” at the Zurich Film Festival. The film chronicles the Ochoa family and how they run a private ambulance in Mexico City. It is a really interesting and powerful film. In this conversation we talk to Luke about how he got into filmmaking, his previous projects and we discuss his latest film.
