It can be really helpful for artists and creators to get feedback directly from fans to help them understand what it is their fans appreciate and maybe what they could do better. But can there also be a dark side to this connection? What about the power imbalance between a huge celebrity creator and an adoring fan? What if that adoring fan is only 16, or even 14 years old? Even more disturbing, what if the celebrity has perverted fantasies and abuses their power to take advantage of an opportunity to solicit inappropriate images from a child? In March 24, 2015, a court bailiff made his way to the Martin Luther King townhomes, in the lower east side of Detroit. He was looking for 35 year old Mitchelle Blair to serve an eviction notice. Mitchelle owed $2,206 in rent. He knocked at the door, but no one answered. So he identified himself and found a way to get in. The house was filthy but Mitchelle was nowhere to be found. Figuring she had already fled, the bailiff began moving things out of the home. Then he noticed something a bit strange. There was a freezer in the living room. When we talk about true crime stories, it can be hard to try to put ourselves into the story and imagine it ever happening to us. Some people may even blame the victim for putting themselves into a dangerous situation. But it can happen fast, and we may find ourselves as a prisoner of our circumstances before we realize what’s happening. It’s easy to say “that could never happen to me”. When we talk about abuse, we often learn about a lot of negative consequences it has on a victim’s life. It’s an inevitable part of facing this kind of unnatural and unfair treatment. It can have irreversible and devastating effects. But survivors can also learn to turn their scars into a sign of their strength for having survived through a period of abuse.
