Episode 6 - Anonymity on the Web | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Direct Link to the show Subscribe to the feed Shownotes: Hello again, Welcome to Ourtech Technology Podcast - Episode 6 "Where basic information comes easy". Today’s topic in Tech speak is “ anonymity on the web” and ofcourse some productive tools in Gadgets n Tools and hot Oven fresh news. In this episode you might notice a slight voice difference compared to my previous podcast episodes. I have recorded this episode directly on odeo. On odeo one can record online without downloading anything. You just need your mic and a internet connection. You can share or download your recorded content in mp3 format. A great experience I must say. 1) Tech Speak: Anonymity on the web. You me and anyone else can be anonymous on the web. Anonymity allows people to feel more free and disinhibited to discuss/chat otherwise embarrassing or stigmatizing topics but it can also be a community’s biggest enemy. Anonymity allows people to hide behind their computers while saying whatever they want with little ramification and web is the only place where you can become anonymous and get away with it.You get to take on a completely diffrent identity or personality. It’s like a split personality but with a conscious mind. For more pls download the podcast 2) Gadgets and tools: For any filmmaker editing is his lifeline Eyespot and Jumpcut are two websites which offer great online editing. Well they are no Premiere or Avid but nevertheless offer good editing features. You can remix your video with other member’s video and share it with the publisher's consent ofcourse. Give it a spin BuzzShout is a collaborative review site for new web companies. If you have something to say to or about a web 2.0 company, this is the place you can visit . Anyone can suggest a new company . Submissions go through a moderator before being posted.Once a company is included in BuzzShout, any member can review it. Vyew (View) lets you collaborate in real-time with other users in a web based meeting room. There are 2 ways to start a meeting 1) anonymous meeting ( I wonder what is anonymous!!!!) (requires no registration) and you can invite up to 2 users, 2) if you register free, you can invite up to 20 participants and get a few other member benefits. Vyew offers photo sharing, whiteboarding, file sharing, screen captures, and can run from your browser without the need to download anything . But you require flash and java. Check out it’s site for more info. Jajah lets you make VOIP calls from your normal phone, landline at a very low cost. How it works? On the website you simply enter your phone number and the phone number of the person you'd like to call. After you press the call button your phone ring and when you pick up jajah initiates the call. What you need is a internet connection and a phone line to receive calls. 3) Oven freshnews -Tech news A) Finally the much anticipated google calendar has released. It’s in beta right now. New users can register for it too. Integrated with Gmail, the calendar service gives users the ability to easily create, share and discuss multiple calendars and events. . Events are either entered into the calendar or Gmail will find mention of an event and automatically add the date to your calendar. To find an event, a new search-bar has been added to the e-mail service. Google's goal was to make the service "drop-dead simple," said Carl Sjogreen, product manager for Google Calendar. "We heard from our users about their frustration with the current tools," explained. Google wanted to breathe life into the calendar concept through sharing and simplicity,The free Web-based event planner is another step in Google's pursuit of Microsoft's domination of productivity applications. It also begins the entry of the Internet powerhouse into social-networking. B) Some of you might have heard this few days back, Apple Computer's surprise software release allowing the company's newest Intel-based Macs to run Windows which is something like Virtualization a superior alternative method of achieving the same effect. Apple’s Boot camp beta installs Microsoft OS in a partition and gives the user a option of either using Microsoft OS or Mac OS whereas with Virtualization you can run both the OS’s at once with slight drop in performance. But as of now Apple is not keen on Virtualization and is happy with dual boot option.

 Episode 5 - IPTV | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Direct Link to the show Subscribe to the feed Shownotes: Hello again, Welcome to Ourtech Technology Podcast - Episode 5 "Where basic information comes easy". I think 2006 started on a great note, as far as Internet and other related technologies go. I know, I am little late to put up this show in this year, due to my other work commitments, but trust me I am going to give you all the best.In today's episode we are going to talk about IPTV technologies and regarding the same we have an exclusive interview with Aaron Keogh, Business development director: Matrixstream IPTV Technologies where he talks about IPTV technology and their latest IMX 1020 set top box due for launch. Moreover some interesting tools in Gadgets n Tools and some Oven fresh news. 1) Tech Speak: Today we are going to talk about IPTV: IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) describes a system where a digital television service is delivered to subscribing consumers using the Internet Protocol over a broadband connection. In simple words movie channels and television programmes are streamed instantly through any broadband connection up to your TV, PC, Cell phones etc. Regarding the same, today we have an exclusive interview with Aaron Keogh Business development director with Matrixstream IPTV Technologies. He’s going to talk about IPTV Technology and their new product IMX 1020 1080 H 264 set box .Down below are the links to the video and pictures of Matrixstream's High Definition STB, IMX 1020. Matrixstream IPTV - short points (1) End to End platform that run's over best effort network for set top box / PC Player / Cell phone. (2) 1080P H.264 Low cost / High definition set top box that does 1080P from as low as 2.5mbps over best effort network to any broadband connection. (3) Fast deploying / Low cost / easy to use / high user scaling / plug and play platform that run's over any broadband connection. Links for Video + Pictures of IMX 1020 and more information : IMX1020 1080P H.264 set top box overview video http://www2.matrixstream.com/presskit/hd_stb_demo.wmv ( 69.76 MB ) Set Top Box Pictures and more information http://www2.matrixstream.com/presskit.cfm 2) Gadgets and tools: Ajaxwrite is a great online word processor similar to WORD but without some advanced features. But it's very easy to use and gets you going in no time. Worth checking out . Videoegg allows users to take video from any device namely dv cam, cell phone in most of the formats eg: 3gp2, avi, dv mpg, mpg4, mov, mqv, wmv and then after installing a small plugin in your computer you just need to upload the video which then gets converted in flash format. Therefore you need flash 8 plug-in to view the videos which usually everyone has. There after, you can share your video with anyone you want or upload it to any site you want. Just keep in mind though, as of now the upload limit is to 5 mins of video. I have tried this website and took not more then 30 seconds to do the whole process of registering and uploading my video. You can have a look at my film. It’s a short 25 second film I had made for a short film contest which was selected 2nd. Please click this link to see the film: http://www.videoegg.com/link/2d6b8c33fb28836c115c8:2142 Librivox volunteers record chapters of books in the public domain ( meaning which don’t have copyright issues ) and this website releases the recorded material in audio format back to the net. The main objective is to make all the books availabe for free and in audio format which are downloadable. It’s totally free, anyone can volunteer to read and ofcourse it’s free to download and listen. It’s a interesting project and a effort, please try it out. 3) Oven freshnews -Tech news A) As the world’s internet traffic grows relentlessly, faster data transmission will be need of the hour. German and Japanese scientists recently collaborated to achieve just that in achieving the world record for data transmission. By transmitting a data signal at 2.56 terabits per second over a 160-kilometer link (equivalent of transeferring data worth of 60 DVDs) the researchers bettered the old record of 1.28 terabits per second held by a Japanese group. By comparison, the fastest high-speed links currently carry data at a maximum 40 Gbit/s, or around 50 times slower. B) Stuart Calvey, a 22-year-old industrial design student at the University of NSW whose invention needs some encouragement. He’s designed a Snap+Send Postcard, a disposable digital camera. So when you travel and want to send some postacards back home, why not try this. It takes a few shots , all you have to do is stick a stamp on it and send it by mail to your family and friends. It’s light and should be inexpensive when out in the market. Then whoever receives it tears open the perforations, fold out a little kick stand on the back and sit it on a bench top. Then it's as simple as pressing a button and it will go through a slide show of images. You could watch the slide show a few hundred times and the camera could be taken to a developer to get the photos printed. The palm-sized camera-cum-postcard, housed in a cardboard shell with a two-megapixel lens, a 10-centimetre screen, digital memory and an internal battery, There would be no delete or zoom functions and it would be one-use only. Snap+Send Postcard is still just a concept, but the young inventor says the technology exists to turn the idea into a commercial reality. C) The British Library in London on Thursday published an online edition Mozart's "Catalog of Works" that includes digital versions of 30 pages from the priceless original. You can browse Mozart's handwritten pages and listen to short introductions from 75 of the eighteenth century composer's works. To view the online edition, users must install Adobe's Shockwave Player plug-in to their browser.

Pardon for not coming up with a podcast last week as I was unwell, but in this episode I am going to make it up for the last week. Actually this would have been my 5th Episode.Well in this episode we are going to flip through year 2005 which brought some interesting and innovative web technologies and thus changed the face of internet completely. 2005 has been a crucial year for primarily helping us all connect, work, interact with the Web and eachother better, thanks to Web 2.0. RSS, Blogging, Ajax, Delicious, Wikipedia... w'll talk a little more in depth on these topics and other worth mentioning moments / technologies which took place in 2005. And ofcourse there's gadget speak and oven fresh news to keep you productive. So stayed tuned..........and see you in Tech 2006 with Ourtech.God bless you all !! Following are the links discussed in the podcast regarding Web 2.0 and other technologies: 1) Tech Speak: A) RSS RSS means (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for distributing and aggregating Web content …(such as news headlines). There are RSS readers whihc you can download or create a customizable personal start page to get your RSS feeds with google or yahoo. http://my.yahoo.com/s/about/rss/ or http://www.google.co.in/ig?hl=en RSS Readers - These are all free rss readers which you can download and install, I personally use feedreader which is quite good http://www.rssreader.com http://www.feedreader.com http://www.pluck.com http://www.bradsoft.com/download/index.asp for ( Feed Demon) ( Please note feed demon is not free, it's a trial version ) What you need to do ? You can download eg: Ourtech Technology Podcast directly from this website or copy paste the RSS feed of this podcast in special programs to download and subscribe to this podcast automatically. Let me also add that podcast was introduced in late 2004, but has gained incredible acceptance and momentem in 2005 giving birth to various business idea's and tons of mp3 players - ipod family ( ipod is usually associated with podcast because, ipod was introduced before podcast was introduced and hence everyone thinks ipod=podcast, but the fact is that you can listen or see a podcast in any mp3 player supporting mp3 format and specific video formats) , creative zen family, iriver, sony network walkman to name a few. And now with video podcast and other media joining the party, it just gets better. C) AJAX - Ajax, is a web development technique for creating interactive web applications. using a combination of XHTML, Javascript and XML. Following are some AJAX applications which are worth trying out. http://www.protopage.com/v2 This is a customizable personal start page. You can add in your RSS feeds here too.Similar to this is http://www.pageflakes.com but it's works only in IE. These apps are worth a look. http://www.gchart.com/index.php Time Convertor http://ajax.parish.ath.cx/translator Nice little language Translator http://www.kiko.com/ It's basic but cute little online calender http://dojotoolkit.org Dojo is a open source javascript toolkit that helps you build serious applications in less time. API - Application Program Interface. It's basicaly a interface developed by third party developers which existing applications or computer systems allow to integrate within itself. Open Source Softwares are free and thus it allows you to modify them, as long as the software is licensed under an open-source license. There are tons of open source software available for offline or online use, for every field and purpose namely web browser, office applications, RSS/atom readers, firewall, instant messengers etc . http://www.openoffice.org/ OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and multilingual office suite and an open-source project. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ This is wonderful software for recording and editing sounds. I use it for recording and editing my podcast and I can vouch for it. It's so easy and yet powerful. http://www.blender3d.org/cms/Home.2.0.html Blender software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. http://www.feedreader.com/ This is an easy RSS reader. The trip, tracked with a global positioning device (GPS) by scientists at Christmas Island National Park, is by far the longest known non-stop journey by one of these critically endangered seabirds. b) Mozilla is calling all independent filmmakers looking for their first big break. The open-source software maker launched the Firefox Flicks Ad Contest, which requires submissions of 30-second ads from anyone and everyone. Mozilla has seen over 10 million Web users adopt Firefox 1.5 in less than one month since its release. c) If you have an iPod or any mp3 player, you might be interested in the new research. In order to keep your ears functioning at top capacity, you’ll need to keep these guidelines in mind- Northwestern University audiologist advises that to keep “ear-healthy” people using iPods or other portable listening devices with headphones should follow the “60 percent, 60 minute” rule. This basically says that listeners can use these devices for up to 60 minutes daily if they limit their volume to 60% of maximum. If users are willing to listen at less than 60% of full volume, they may listen longer.” So for now Happy and Safe Listening and Wish you all a very Happy and A Properous 2006..
