 #6 - Stephan van Maris (E-village) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:46

In this episode of the podcast I chat with Stephan van Maris, Product Owner of the Clang e-mail marketing platform at E-Village. Stephan has a technical background and developed himself from one of the core engineers to Product Owner who is now letting go of the technical details to focus on improving the product through customer collaboration. In the 5 parts to this interview (new experiment!) we discuss: 1. Introduction, path to current role, context (organization) and mandate level as a Product Owner; 2. Collaboration with the Scrum Team - Stephan shares how he works with the development team and scrum master, and tells a story of their approach for better alignment in developing and designing a new module, by collaborating as a team on the ideation and possible realization, resulting in the new module's backlog items as a team effort (instead of being a solo-PO act); 3. Stakeholder Management - Stephan discusses how he engages both the internal stakeholder field as well as the external stakeholders through regular contact & customer feedback events; 4. Value Steering - We discuss the current efforts to close the feedback loop by introducing metrics for value steering. Up till now Stakeholder discussions and subsequent decisions were based on hypothetical returns and gut feeling, but by implementing a low cost usage statistic tool (Piwik), now the backlog decisions are based on data and this is influencing decisions and discussions already; 5. Closing - We discuss how Stephan deals with technical debt, NFR's and the bouyscout rule used by the development team. Furthermore after mentioning culture a few times in the earlier parts, Stephan shares a Netflix presentation that gave him valuable insights for developing the E-Village culture.  #5 - Prioritizing Stories with Matthias Orgler (Dreimannzelt) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:37:02

In this 5th podcast we chat with Matthias Orgler, a Product Development Expert & Agile Coach from Germany. He has experience working in startups in Silicon Vally and these days together with his colleagues at Dreimannzelt he helps businesses build awesome products. When he's not helping businesses, he can be found on stage with one of his bands, working on his book (How to Prioritize Stories) or teaching an Agile Project Management class. And according to Matthias, students have a knack for asking the really good questions. So, the challenge is set and we dive in to our really good questions! We discuss diverse topics relating to backlog management. Topics include sizing & prioritizing stories, applying focus & collaborating with the development team and stakeholders. Please enjoy this episode and feel free to follow up with me or Matthias via the below contact details. Special thanks to Michael Seidel for suggesting Matthias as a guest!  Episode #4 - Wilbert Seele (Prowareness) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:33:05

In this fourth episode of the podcast I chat with Wilbert Seele, my colleague at Prowareness. He’s an Agile Scaling expert and ‘Continuous Disruptor'. I asked him on the podcast not to discuss tips and tricks for the Product Owner, but to discuss the idea of a 'Chief' Product Owner and why he thinks that is a really bad idea or even a really, really, really bad idea. In this interview we also discuss the importance of knowing your problem, translating that into your process/product design and avoiding the sunk cost fallacy. And I diss accountants. To be sure: I do think there is value in doing proper accounting, as the right side of the manifesto: supporting the value adding activities and the individuals and interactions. So I meant it half-jokingly. And ironically we conclude our conversation with the advice to always take Product Ownership seriously! ;-) Since we aim to continually improve this series, we highly value your feedback.  Episode #3 - Dave West (CEO / Product Owner Scrum.org) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:05:20
