The Shift Episode 3: A little too surly | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:21

Because of the holidays, Bryan, Stuart, and I were able to find a mutually agreeable time to bring you the third episode of The Shift! Keeping with the most prevalent news story floating around, the three of us talked about the Hall of Fame -- the process the BBWAA goes through, the candidates we feel deserve to be enshrined, and what the future will hold for the Hall. Plus, we continue Better Know a Stat, focusing on some fun metrics for relief pitchers. On this show we discuss:Deadspin's Hall of Fame voteThe HoF voting process, and who we think will get in this yearOur personal HoF ballots for this yearShutdowns and meltdownsAnd much, much more!

The Shift Episode 2: Pitching for keeps | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 31:44

Back by popular demand (or because no one told us to stop), we bring you a new edition of the Shift. Some scheduling conflicts kept Bryan on the sidelines for this one, but Stuart and I soldiered on, discussing which pitcher we would start a franchise with, some recent transactions, and we wrapped up by getting into the nitty-gritty of RA9, a nifty metric that is helpful in analyzing pitcher performance. On this show we discuss:The best young pitchers in baseballThe newest Yankee, Brian McCannPete Kozma's replacement, Jhonny PeraltaJoe Smith, Jason Vargas, and Danny HarenBetter Know a Stat: RA9And much, much more!

If you missed the news last week, Beyond the Box Score has launched a new podcast called The Shift, and this morning we bring you the show's first official episode. Neil Weinberg joined Bryan Grosnick and I to chat about some of the more interesting trade rumors floating around the internet right now. Then, the three of us all took a crack at making up our own fake trades, and we finished by talking a little bit about the importance of FIP, and how it can help you in evaluating pitchers.  And as you'll see below, we're now on iTunes, so be sure to subscribe and never miss a new episode! On this show we discussed:The Jose Bautista for Dominic Brown rumorDavid Freese's current market valueThe Orioles' chances to contend in 2014Fielding independent pitching theory and DIPS theory

Shift Podcast Pilot Episode: New is always better | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 35:47

If you follow Beyond the Box Score on twitter (as you should be doing), you may have caught wind sometime last week of the exciting news that we're launching a brand new podcast here at the site. And today, it's with great pleasure that we bring you the first episode of our new show, The Shift. What's with the name, you may ask? Well, first and foremost, we wanted this show to be its own entity, separate from the wonderful, but now retired BtBS Podcast most recently hosted by Blake Murphy. Once we had decided on that, we went through a variety of different names before landing on The Shift. The shift literally refers to a very modern, analytic defensive tactic, but it also can be applied to the movement from old school to new school thinking in the game.On the podcast we will strive for the same thing we do for in our written content -- to bring you the best baseball analysis with a saber-slant, while also fostering a community of baseball enthusiasts that understand and appreciate the game with an analytic eye. I can tell you that Bryan, Stuart, and I are going to have a ton of fun with this, and we sincerely hope that you'll join in by listening and interacting with the show on a regular basis. On our pilot show, we discussed:Who we are.Qualifying offers: Who got them, who didn't, and what surprised us.The Silver Slugger awardsAnd much, much more!
