Summary: This podcast contains audio versions of the popular History of the Saints television series seen on BYU-TV. The series is a continuation of the Joseph Smith Paper's documentary series, also aired on BYU-TV and radio. History of the Saints begins with the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith and then moves forward through the great Mormon Exodus of Nauvoo and culminates with the arrival of Brigham Young and the Vanguard Company arriving in the Salt Lake Valley in July 1847. The show features the most outstanding scholarship currently available on the subject.

In 1846, the Donner Party left the Missouri River bound for California. They were better prepared than most emigrants and made decent time until they were persuaded by Lanceford Hastings to take an untried road through the Wasatch Mountains and across the great salt desert. This is the first part of that story from the Missouri River to Donner Hill in the Salt Lake Valley.

William Smith, James J. Strang, Sidney Rigdon--all were dissenters. Starting in 1844 they tried to lead the Saints away from those who rightly held the keys of authority in the Church. In the winter of 1846-47 most of the Saints headed west were gathered at Winter Quarters on the banks of the Missouri River. However, there was a small group of some of the Church's most valuable men who were hunkered down elsewhere. They had been the Church's advance party. Most people think that the Latter-day Saints all left Nauvoo in the winter of 1846 following Brigham Young, but such is not the case. President Young led a small group that was called the Vanguard Company. The great majority of the Saints came out of Nauvoo in the Spring and Summer of 1846. They were the Spring Exodus.
