This post marks the first anniversary of our Audiodrome: Music in Film series. As such, we wanted to do something special to mark the occasion. Initially I had vaguely planned to have a look at a series of soundtracks by a particular artist and present them in the usual format of an article and a few audio tracks. Then the idea of producing a podcast was suggested. This presented us with the opportunity of not only discussing music in film, but, more excitingly, to actually listen to much more of it too. We wanted to talk about a composer who has not only a long and wide-ranging career in film soundtracks, but whose work is distinctive, original and enjoyable to listen to. You can see where I’m going with this, can’t you? Basically, it didn’t take long to select the subject of this podcast. John Carpenter is not only a renowned filmmaker responsible for some of genre cinema’s most influential and entertaining titles – he is also an accomplished musician, whose early dabbling in electronic music proved to be truly groundbreaking; not only in the world of film scores, but in popular music in general.
