 Jazz Now! Seattle – Episode 105 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:48:19

It’s the two-year anniversary of Jazz Now! Seattle, and we’re celebrating by giving you one gig for every day of the week this next week, and two for Friday — plus we get a call from our wayward co-host, Jason Parker… enjoy! Buy This CD Track 1: Michael Shrieve’s Spellbinder “Every Step of the Way” from “Live at Tost” Michael Shrieve’s Spellbinder is back into their every Monday night residency at The White Rabbit in Fremont… as they say on their website: new songs, new place, new vibes, same address! Featuring Joe Doria on Hammond B-3, Danny Godinez on guitar, John Fricke on trumpet and Farko Dosumov on bass, this band is equally at home playing rock, jazz, funk, fusion and more. Their time together as a unit clearly shows on this groovy tune. Upcoming show: Monday, October 1st at The White Rabbit, 9:30pm Buy This CD Track 2: Tess Guerzon “Cheek to Cheek” from “Heart Songs” Vocalist Tess Guerzon brings here crew of regular sidemen to The Royal Room for a birthday gig this coming week dubbed “Tess Guerzon and Friends”. Sure to be a festive atmosphere in one of the best rooms in Seattle for live music of any kind. Upcoming show: Tuesday, October 2nd at The Royal Room, 8pm Visit His Site Track 3: Michael Owcharuk Trio – “Spinnin’” Pianist and accordionist Michael Owcharuk brings his trio to Vito’s, a venue quickly re-establishing itself on the local music scene, particularly in the jazz community. Upcoming show: Wednesday, October 3rd at Vito’s Visit Their Site Track 4: Clave Gringa – “Songo Borracho” Clave Gringa is a Seattle-based Latin jazz ensemble showcasing the compositions of Ann-ita Reynolds, along with fellow bandmates Daniel Berry, Dan O’Brien, Edsson Otero, and Ernesto Pediango. Ann-ita Reynolds is a regular with the Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra, so you may have heard her before, but this is the podcast debut of Clave Gringa… Upcoming show: Thursday, October 4th at Tula’s Buy This Album Track 5: The Schwa “Western Shirts and the Creaking Chair” from “Cosmonaut Cowboy”  The Schwa came together after a years long courtship of a rotating cast of Seattle’s all-star improvisers, eventually settling on percussionist Bob Rees, multi reedist Chris Credit, and upright bassist Geoff Larson. Vibraphonist Justin Sorensen conceived of an idea for a band that would fuse together ambient music and avant garde jazz in hope of better understanding time, place, and emotion. As a composer Sorensen uses the muse of common occurrences in daily life to strengthen his connection to place. The Northwest, famous for its dark, gray, rain soaked months are perfect for The Schwa as they aim to find all that is beautiful within them. Upcoming show: Friday, October 5th at The Royal Room, 8:30pm Click to Buy Track 6: Reptet “Milky Shakes” from “At The Cabin” One of our favorites on the show, this is a composition of trumpeter Samantha Boshnack with Isaak Mills, Chris Credit on alto, Nelson Bell on tuba, Tim Carey on bass and John Ewing on drums. A super fun band on a great double-bill this Friday. Upcoming show: Friday, October 5th at The Royal Room, 9:30pm Click to Buy Track 7: Bill Anschell with Brent Jensen “What Is This Thing Called Love?” from “We Couldn’t Agree More” Bill Anschell brings his new Standards Trio — with Jeff Johnson on bass and D’Vonne Lewis on drums — to Tula’s Friday night. The group is fairly new, so no recordings as yet, but here he is playing a great Cole Porter standard in duo format with saxophonist Brent Jensen. Upcoming show: Friday, October 5th at Tula’s TweetShare It!#call_to_action h4{padding:0px 5px;}

 Jazz Now! Seattle – Episode 103 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:32:48

We managed to get an episode up just in the nick of time — enjoy this short and sweet episode featuring some upcoming gigs and their performers this week, including a couple of sets at Vito’s, and a closing set featuring drummer Brad Gibson… plus we debut the new album from pianist Alex Guilbert…   Click to Buy 1. Carolyn Graye – “The Footprints” From the CD Poems By Denise Levertov (Pony Boy Records) Carolyn is equally adept as a vocalist and pianist. Her latest CD is a very cool collection of tunes based on the poems of Denise Levertov. Surrounded by a first-call band of Phil Sparks on bass, John Stowell on guitar, Hans Teuber on sax and clarinet, Gary Hobbs on drums and percussion and Jim Knapp on trumpet, she lays down beautiful foundations for the poems. This track features great playing by all and a short poem at the very end of the track. Upcoming gig: 9/18 at Egan’s, 7pm Buy this music 2. Tim Kennedy – “Mingus in Springtime” From the CD Where We Live (self-produced) Tim will be bringing his trio to Vito’s this next week… you’ll have to go to the gig to find out who the sidemen are, but it’s a safe bet one of his two compadres in Gravity will be there… Upcoming gig: 9/20 at Vito’s, 9pm Buy this music 3. Sonando – “Wild Flower” From the CD Tres (Origin Records) Here’s another frequently gigging band that we haven’t featured much on the podcast, and in light of heir upcoming gig, it was time to do it again! Fred Hoadley has been leading the band Sonando for years, bringing killer Latin Jazz to the Pacific Northwest. Upcoming gig: 9/20 at Tula’s, 7pm Get This New CD 4. Alex Guilbert — “Everywhere Stranger” From the album “On The Ground” (self-produced) Pianist Alex Guilbert is a regular at the New Orleans on Tuesdays with the Holotradband and also appears on rotation at Serafina, but it’s rare to hear him in trio format — thankfully he’s released a fabulous new record we are debuting here today, with more to come in the future. Get This on MP3 5. Gibson and Gibson — “5 on 4″ From the album “The Amber Tone” (self-produced) Brad Gibson is a busy drummer in town as a sideman and leader, bringing his trio to Vito’s later this week. Here him here with a fabulous quintet of fellow Gibson Clark Gibson, Jon Hamar, Brian Bermudez, and Dawn Clement. Upcoming gig: 9/19 at Vito’s, 9pm Be sure to listen to the end of the podcast about remembrances of Gaye Anderson — we’d love to hear from you at 206-984-2410.
