Episode 46 Ten Essentials vs. Systems of Survival Part 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:25:07

Today’s Show Was Brought to You By:Audible.com NWHomes4Sale.net As a young teenager back in the day, the Mountaineers’ Ten Essentials for me were the starting point or base for my Systems of Survival that I use today. In part 1 of today’s show I compare the Ten Essentials lists, old and new and cover how I’ve added the components that I feel are more in-tune with the type of outdoor activities I participate in today. There are also parallels between wilderness and urban survival preparedness that make my systems a good base for planning and preparing.  Episode 43 Wilderness Adventure Planning | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:32:59

This subject may be way too detailed for most people but if you’re looking to have the advantage of survival then being prepared can only be a step in the right direction. I realize people like to be spontaneous and I do too. Just know you can do a little preplanning in a “global” manor such as preparing and using a “common” survival kit (See Episode 41) that travels where you do. One that can be merged with your adventure specific equipment you plan to use. That small step alone may keep your next adventure spontaneous.  Take the kit; toss it in your pack and go. Now don’t you feel better knowing you did something to improve a survival situation if it shows its face on your next adventure? I want to enlist your help on this. I’m looking to create a master list for adventure planning that I can provide to help you and me plan our next wilderness adventures. So please share any ideas or topics you think would be good to include in that list. Thank you and enjoy Episode 43 Wilderness Adventure Planning. les@advantagesurvival.com Today’s Show Sponsor NWHomes4Sale.netThe Adventure Plan Phase You get a bur in your bum to go play outside.  Episode 41 My Survival Kit | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:37:15

Today’s Show Sponsor NWHomes4Sale.net Show Notes In the spirit of never staying “static” in my survival mine set, here I go again tweaking my survival kits. For me it’s a way for life but for some this can be somewhat of a daunting or confusing task. I mean let’s face it; these days you’ve got: EDC’s, Bug out Bags, Get Home Bags, Backpacks, Car Kits, Lightweight, Ultra Lightweight, Micro Kits, The Kits that Les gave me Kits, Kits in some kind of Tin Kits, Caveman Kits, Ready-made Kits, Kits that cost a lot of money Kits and then -there’s the kit you build yourself. I like this kit because I know what’s in it and chances are I’ve probably used or practiced with the items in it before. Items in my kit and remember my Systems of Survival as you build your kits. Why not? The only thing you have to loose is your life. Keep it on you if you can or at least in arms reach. Know what’s in it and how to use the stuff. If you have kids, let them help you put the kit together and let them come up with some ideas for items like putting a family photo in the kit. Help them build the one for their adventures.  Episode 40 Sawyer Interview with Patrick Hurst | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:43:33

Today’s Show Sponsor NWHomes4Sale.net Show Notes Part of what makes the Advantage Survival Podcast one of your survival resources, is that I try and bring information, products and technologies that will help you gain the advantage of survival in all your life adventures. Today, I bring you an interview with Patrick Hurst from Sawyer, sawyer.com. Sawyer is one of the incredible companies out there that is making a difference and saving lives around the world. Patrick explains Sawyer’s product offerings and the technologies behind the products that make them so attractive to outdoor and survival minded people. When I started researching a more reliable replacement for my pump-type water filtration system in my Water System of Survival I soon discovered the Sawyer Squeeze. I purchased my first unit and gave it a backcountry run for its money. After owning several water filtration units from many different manufacturers I soon made the Sawyer Squeeze and Sawyer Mini my main “go to” filters in all my backpacks, Get Home Bags and it is certainly a travel companion in my carryon bag. In addition, when I was doing my research on water filtration I didn’t anticipate the depth of other lifesaving products Sawyer had to offer; from Insect Repellents, Sunscreens, to a diverse collection of First Aid Kits and supplies.  We talk about that and much more with Patrick Hurst from Sawyer. Please enjoy the show and don’t forget to check out all the products and information available at sawyer.com.  Episode 37 Headlamps Own the Night | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:42:36

Olight H15 Wave S Today's Show Sponsor NWHomes4Sale.net Show Notes If you’re going out to play after dark then you need to own the night. Get your headlamp on! I’m not talking night vision gear here, although that would be another incredible way to own the night. For us mere mortal budget-conscious individuals headlamps will have to do and my new pick is the Olight H15 Wave S. In today’s show I discuss my philosophy on headlamps and why I think you need a few in your Survival Kits and Get Home Bags. Oh I forgot to add this little tip in the show so here’s an exclusive for you: This is an old search and rescue hack that can help improve your nighttime headlamp capabilities. Wear the headlamp upside-down and around your neck while hiking at night in foggy conditions. Just like dimming your high beams in an automobile driving in similar condition, you will see further and better. You can even attach the headlamp to your packs hip belt. Upside-down lets you adjust the head up as needed for distance.  Episode 36 Fire Starting Kits | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:43:35

Today's Show Sponsor NWHomes4Sale.net Show Notes A Fire Starting Kit is one of the most personal items you can create for your own Survival Kit. I’m going to talk about my Fire Starting Kit or Survival Fire Kit and what I keep inside. What I use in my kit is based on my environment or environments I recreate in. I think it’s important to keep in mind as you create the kit that best works for you, that you make it very user friendly. After all teaching someone how to make a bow drill in a survival situation while your hands are broken could be challenging. Have the advantage of fire on demand. Keep a kit with you!
