"Hey Google" Smart Home Summit Google hosted this virtual smart home IoT conference for developers, their first after canceling Google I/O and other events. TWiT's Smart Tech Today hosts Mikah Sargent and Matthew Cassinelli gave color commentary. The event was not quite the professionally-produced affair that Apple and Microsoft gave us at their developer keynotes earlier this year - it seemed more like a hastily-arranged Zoom call. After a 15-minute delay, Vlad Serban, the Strategic Partner Development Manager for Scale at Google, started things off. Phillip Klimke, the Strategic Partner Development Manager for Security at Google, discussed security. Tasnoba Nusrat, the Strategic Partner Development Manager for Comfort and Control at Google, talked about controlling energy management devices. Katelyn Mason, the Strategic Partner Development Manager for SHED at Google, introduced Google's home entertainment devices. Alessandro Germano, the Head of Business Development for Latin America and Bianca Waclawek, the Strategic Partner Development Manager for LATAM at Google, focused on the importance of developing relationships in Latin America. The main keynote featured Michele Turner, Director of Product Management for Google Smart Home Ecosystem Devices. Highlights: Apple Silicon is all about performance and interoperability. Universal 2 will make Intel apps work on Apple Silicon with Xcode. Unity runs on Apple Silicon. Rosetta 2 virtualization uses Parallels. iOS apps will run natively on macOS with Apple Silicon. macOS Big Sur has a new design that borrows heavily from iOS and iPadOS. Big Sur is macOS 11. iPad Pro Lidar sensor has new uses in iPadOS 14. Apple Pencil ads Scribble and Scratch in iPadOS 14. You'll be able to code widgets with Swift in iOS 14. Tim Cook, Craig Federighi, Kevin Lynch, and others deliver the World Wide Developers Conference 2020 keynote.Highlights: iOS 14 will include App Library, Widgets, Picture-in-picture video, and improvements to Siri, Messages, and Apple Maps. Starting with new BMWs, you can use your iPhone as a car key. Emily Schubert talks about how you will be able to use your iPhone as a car key. App Clips will let you use parts of apps without downloading the whole app. iPadOS 14 adds Sidebar and new Apple Pencil features. watchOS 7 gets customizable complications and professionally designed watch faces. Other new features include sleep tracking, a handwashing timer that automatically senses when you are using soap, and new dance workouts. HomeKit will be further integrated with Google Home and Amazon Alexa. Foundation comes to Apple TV+ in 2021. macOS Big Sur has all-new design that looks very similar to iPadOS 14. And the big finish: In their secret underground lab, Tim Cook, Johny Srouji, and Andreas Wendker show off the new Apple Silicon chips for Mac. Apple apps like Final Cut Pro and Xcode are already ready for the transition. Universal 2 will let apps run on Intel and Apple Silicon. Microsoft Office and Adobe apps like Lightroom and Photoshop already work on Apple Silicon. Rosetta 2 will automatically translate Intel-based apps to work on Apple Silicon. Virtualization will let you use Linux on Macs. iOS apps will work natively on Mac. The Quick Start program will help developers with the transition, and the Developer Transition Kit, a Mac Mini with an A12z Bionic chip, is available now. Apple Silicon Macs will be available by the end of the year, and the whole transition will take two years. Developer betas of all OS's are available now; public betas will be available in July. Microsoft Build 2020 Satya Nadella Vision Keynote, Imagine Cup, and Scott Hanselman Developer Keynote Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella gave his annual Vision Keynote at Build 2020. Nadella talked briefly about Github, Power Platform, Azure, Windows, Teams, and Project Reunion. He interviewed Greg Bowman, Director of Folding@Home, talking about how Folding@Home has been used to fight Alzheimer's Disease and Cancer, and is currently being used to fight Covid-19. Then he featured five artists at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music who have been using Teams to connect virtually during the current shelter-at-home order. After Nadella's keynote, the conference moved on to the Imagine Cup, a tech competition for college students. The winning team, Hollow from Hong Kong, is developing a tool to help throat cancer victims recover their voices. Build then moved on to Scott Hanselman, who interviewed several developers. He first interviewed Kayla Clarence about the Windows Subsystem for Linux, the new Windows terminal, the Winget Windows Package Manager, and using Teams to code in the terminal collaboratively. Then he called Nat Friedman, CEO of Github. Friedman talked about Github's new free-to-everybody system, mobile app, and integration with Visual Studio through Codespace. Then he interviewed Allison Buchholtz-Au, Program Manager of Codespace at Microsoft who went id-depth about Codespace. Scott also talked about .Net Core 3.1 and changes to Visual Studio 2019.
