On today’s show, Octavius speaks with Sarah Negadhari of The Happy Hollows. Sarah is one of the most charismatic and lovable people in the music scene in the country. People simply adore her, and it was really a pleasure to have a nice long talk with her. You know how you see people at parties or clubs, and you can only talk in 3 or 4 minute intervals…….. I’ve been wanting to have this talk for about 3 or 4 years…….and it was so great to have this talk with her. Topics include: Getting Signed/Not Signed, Sugar Ray, Lyrics about Flying, Sarah’s many living situations, being Iranian, her Favorite comedian, and the oldest memory you ever had………..AND, an unreleased track from her solo project Pisces (which she says she’s never played for ANYONE!) As you all know, Podcast Shmodcast began as a series of interviews with Peter Choyce in Octavius’ house, then progressed to be a New Commentary show on KXLU Radio, and has morphed into many different experimental formats. So far, I know we’ve recorded well over 120 hours of shows, starting way back in Sept 2009. THIS Show, and the last few shows feels like a revelation to me……..a turning point if you will. I realize…….. I love people. I love conversation. And I love the people I know here in the beautiful city of Los Angeles. So, as much as I love telling jokes, reading the news, and riffing on stuff in general…….. I’m really excited to start making more shows with long form interviews and guests. We start today’s show off by talking about Herman Cain, which leads us to talking about our future aspirations. We discuss the rush of doing stand up comedy, and our personal stand up comedy dreams. Have you ever met someone at a party, and put their name in your phone as a strange description that you don’t remember?
On todays show we discuss why the show has been a bit more infrequent. Topics also include news getting the news from the news, Negativland, Helter Stupid, Joe Paterno and the Penn State molestation controversy. Are sports gay? Can kids come onto adults? Does anyone see a straight gay double standard here?
On today’s show we talk about Future Islands, The Cure’s new tour, the worst Cure songs, and Occupy Walls Street. So Jay poses the question….How do we all feel about the Occupy Wall Street protesters, and their demands. Isn’t Capitalism about Greed? Are they just spoiled kids? Are they any more clueless than the protesters in any decade? How do we stop our government being in debt to corporations? What is wrong with the character of US Politicians? How does government function differently than a business? Does Octavius believe in Fascism? How do you define the success of a country? Perhaps any action is better than no action…… We take out the show with some Captain Ahab.
Octavius tells the story about the birth of his child last week, and his strategy for having the best birth experience possible. He describes the experience of labor, the trip to the hospital, what music they listened to, what tv shows they watched during serious labor, etc….and meeting Johnny Knoxville in the Nursery at the hospital. We also talk about: Positive Reinforcement, Bonding, Gauntlet Hair, How to pick a song you like, how to use “Uh Oh” in a song, the death of Ghadafi, and the middle name “Hussein”.
The movie “Drive” “Contagion” “Moneyball” and other matinees that Jay’s been checking out. We also talk about the 1981 film “Theif”…..and Octavius doesn’t remember ever actually watching all of “The Godfather.” We discuss Hollywood Actors, Casting, and the fact that even ugly characters are played by hot chicks. And….why do people hanging out together dress the same? Why do people look like their Dogs? Do Dogs adopt the owners personalities? Super King Market, and ridiculous Online Reviews! And….Octavius saw Peter Hook play “Unknown Pleasures” with Moby!
