Between the Slides show

Between the Slides

Summary: "Between the Slides" is the moment students and instructors share to have real talk, not just focus on slide content. It is the moment project sponsors, teammates and project managers pause to have productive conversations and make decisions. Selfishly, this podcast started as a way for me to share my all-hazards incident management experience and to continue teaching from the comfort of my home. Thank you for choosing this program. **COMING SOON** - The 'People, Process, Progress' podcast that will spotlight people coming together to work a process together and how doing so can lead to progress for us all.  Interview: From Suicidal to Saving Others with Ben Gomes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:21:25

In 2017 Police Officers, Firefighters and/or EMS workers were more likely to die by suicide than in the line of duty.  This data from the Ruderman White Paper on Mental Health and Suicide of First Responders (April 2018) is alarming and heartbreaking. First responders, meaning Police, Fire, EMS and 911 Communicators, are exposed to horrible experiences on a daily basis. Sometimes many times in one day.  In this episode we talk to Ben Gomes. Ben was an experienced 911 Communicator and is now professional Firefighter.  Ben talks about how he faced his own demons and darkness related to suicide and how we now helps others as part of the Virginia First Responders Support Services (VFRSS). *Resources: * Contact Ben Gomes directly on Instagram @dontcallmeradio via email at Gomes.benjamin.p@gmail.com (mailto:Gomes.benjamin.p@gmail.com)or call or text Ben at 1.804.432.7901 * Virginia First Responder Support Services (VFRSS) * Main site at https://www.vfrss.org/ * Request help at https://www.vfrss.org/request-support * Executive Director Gene Thompson at 1.540.755.0208 * Email training inquiries:VFRSSDirector@gmail.com * National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1.800.273.8255 * Safe Call Now – 1.206.459.3020 * Fire/EMS Helpline – 1.888.731.3473 Key time stamps: * 00:06:13 - Becoming a 911 Communicator * 00:15:04 - Tragedy hits close to home * 00:21:52 - Plotting his own suicide * 00:43:07 - Increased call volumes and First Responder mental health * 01:02:40 - Managing the fear of telling others * 01:15:55 - Asking for help in your locality **If you are in public safety and need help please reach out to someone you know or one of the resources above. The Incident Command System (ICS) dates back to the 1970s.  It took bold people brave enough to recognize their collective shortcomings and bring together multiple organizations to create a unified process to save resources, time and keep people safer.  Their foundation helped the progress of the system and the many people involved in it keep communities safer and lessen the impact of natural and man-made disasters. Key time stamps: * 00:02:40 - WWII veteran's bring back command and control practices * 00:11:39 - Early ICS adopters and pioneers * 00:20:44 - Beginning to make progress in the 1970s * 00:29:06 - A Type III regional team managing a Type I international event Thank you all for listening.  Wellness: First BJJ Competition and Making a Life Pivot | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:17:57

Borrowed a page from the Homeland Security Exercise and Evaluation Programs After Action Report/Improvement Plan (AAR/IP) for myself after my first grappling tournament and two losses.  The IP table is a simple, yet effective way to track improvements from exercises, real incidents or personal improvement needs.  Below is my improvement plan with focus on conditioning: * BJJ Improvement Plan (IP)Capability: Conditioning * Observation Time: 1/2 through 1st match * Recommendation: Maintain conditioning program * Corrective Action: Get After It daily * Capability Element: Victory * Primary Responsible Party: Me * POC: @psctopmp (Instagram & Twitter) * Start Date: 01MAY2019 * Complete Date: Ongoing   In this episode I speak to the improvements, the tournament experience and how we can each be our own change agent to improve mentally and physically. Between the Slides will be on a break for a bit as I re-settle in my new home and re-focus to provide more diverse and value added content.  Thank you all for joining me on this podcast experience.  ICS/IMT: Critical Importance of the Medical Unit | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:16:11

As a Medical Unit Leader (MEDL) student the Dutch Creek Incident involving the death of Andy Palmer on his first wildfire assignment stayed with me throughout my IMT career.  As an all-hazards MEDL I strove to implement the lessons learned from Andy's death and to work closely with my teammates to contingency plan and make sure we could always get to our people if injured and get them to definitive care as soon as possible.  In this episode I share some key tools and the mindset I believe all-hazards Medical Unit Leaders should apply. "Between the Slides 5" for this episode: * Do the job for real * Don't half ass the ICS 206 (Medical Plan) * Document who you treat and pre-screen your teammates * Create and communicate the contingency plan * Don't rely on Operations' resources. Request and coordinate your own.
