Between the Slides show

Between the Slides

Summary: "Between the Slides" is the moment students and instructors share to have real talk, not just focus on slide content. It is the moment project sponsors, teammates and project managers pause to have productive conversations and make decisions. Selfishly, this podcast started as a way for me to share my all-hazards incident management experience and to continue teaching from the comfort of my home. Thank you for choosing this program. **COMING SOON** - The 'People, Process, Progress' podcast that will spotlight people coming together to work a process together and how doing so can lead to progress for us all. Godspeed to you all on your personal and professional journeys, Kevin Kevin Pannell, PMP, PSC3, NREMT Creator and Host, Between the Slides podcast Facebook: Between the Slides Twitter & Instagram: pannellkg Website: www.betweentheslidescom

ICS/IMT: Incident Management Principals and Practical Application | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:59:32

This episode a bit of a capstone for the previous incident command system and incident management episodes of Between the Slides.  The title, Incident Management Principals and Practical Application is the name of an eight hour course I thought of and that friends and colleagues of mine created as a way to provide the "meat and potatoes" one normally gets from the five-day O-305 All Hazards Incident Management course. Distilling a five-day course into eight hours was a great opportunity to provide critical basic foundational incident management skills to a large audience of public health, social services and private sector attendees. Key components of the course: * Common themes and pitfalls * The core skills to manage incidents work in all scenarios * No egos. No silos. Period * We have to keep a solid operational tempo in the team * Incident Command System (ICS) Features Overview * ICS Leadership * Planning and organization * Incident locations and facilities * Communications/Information management * Professionalism * You Can Manage Any Incident or Event * S.M.A.R.T. Objectives * Establish a joint organizational structure * Request resources early and often * How ICS Really Works * Overview by credentialed IMT members or Command Staff * Overview by credentialed IMT members of each Section * Planning "P" overview * Leadership Lessons * See BTS Ep10: Leadership Lessons from Gettysburg * Memorable Quotes * "Inspect what you expect" * "Strive to be imperturbable" Thank you everyone for taking the time to listen and subscribing.  Wellness: Garage Gyms for Deployment Readiness and Therapy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

A little over two years ago I was in a terrible place emotionally, mentally and physically. A friend of mine's prompt for me to listen to Jocko Podcast helped me re-shape my mindset and was the catalyst I needed to make myself get up and get after it.  Building a garage gym doesn't take much as I'll explain in this episode.  The real work is taking the first step and steeling your mind day after day.  I hope this episode helps others in a rut realize they are not alone and that the path to change can be a few steps away in their garage. "Between the Slides 5" key garage gym elements for this episode: * Mindset - Nothing happens without YOUR decision to make the change. * Kettlebells - One of, if not the most diverse and low cost options for improved health and fitness. * Bar - free standing, wall mount or a pipe in the rafters. This develops real human strength. * Jump Rope - Speed rope or one with handles.  Get warmed up or some great cardio with these. * Resistance bands - Diverse to tone, build some strength and to shore up joint and supportive muscles. Thank you for listening and know YOU can make the difference any day you want.  Project Management: Key Elements of an Effective Project Charter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:19:45

Project charters help lay the early groundwork for project success.  In addition to the document, the process Project Managers go through to gather key information to create the charter is invaluable.  Working closely with the sponsor early, partnering with the business owner, and developing key objectives and measures for success creates an early bond among the project team.  In this episode I share twelve key elements I feel every project charter should contain to form a well rounded and effective document.  Thank you for listening and subscribing.  ICS/IMT: All-Hazards Planning Section Chief Class | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:21:25

Students that complete the All-Hazards Planning Section Chief (PSC) Course open the door to assignments in the role.  This is no small thing as the PSC is the keeper of the process, the facilitator of communication and a de facto leader of the incident management team (IMT).  In this episode I share what is key to focus on when taking the PSC course to enable newly graduated students to take on an assignment as a All-Hazards Planning Section Chief. "Between the Slides 5" for this episode: • If at all possible, complete the O-305 course first • Study and be familiar with what the Planning Section’s Units do • Study and know the Planning “P” …well • Study and be familiar with who contributes what from the IMT • Remember, “The fundamentals of the job are the same regardless of incident type” *Quote from Unit 1, 1-9 of the All-Hazards Planning Section Chief course Thank you all for listening, subscribing, rating and reviewing the podcast.  Training/Education: On Student and Instructor Etiquette | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:27:53

Instructors have the unique opportunity to help students along the path of knowledge.  Both the student and the instructor have a stake in the success of a given course or training.  I’ve taught a good number incident command and incident management courses and in this episode I’ll share ways students can help classes succeed and how instructors can provide a solid experience for students through their interactions and preparation. "Between the Slides 5" for ICS and IMT students: * Leave your ego outside the room * Silence your wacky cell phone ringer * Stop banging away on your keyboard * Be mentally and physically present * No you can’t make up your own scenario "Between the Slides 5" for ICS and IMT instructors: * Leave your ego outside the room * Prepare for your section * Encourage healthy disagreement * Make yourself comfortable holding others to the standard * You’re not there to teach tactics Thank you all for listening, subscribing, rating and reviewing the podcast.
