Daily Fill: Decluttering your schedule | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 29:35

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Daily Fill with our Owner and founder Richard Ducat! Every Tuesday Richard gives us a dose of motivation, guidance, life hacks, marketing tips, and more! On today's episode, we start a new a series of podcasts focused on gearing you up for success as a "drumtrepreneur" while giving you guidance, focus, and challenges that will help hold you accountable for success! Our first week is all about getting decluttered and cleaning up your scheduling. This is personally where it all starts for me. The much anticipated Sunday night scheduling session has become more of a stress reliever as it has allowed me to offload my week onto one consistent canvas that can be referenced at any moment. As I said, the process starts at 9:30 PM every Sunday night when I break out my little black book filled with tasks, weekly notes, and scheduling. As I dig through and organize what was and wasn't done last week I steadily jot down the tasks that need to be moved into this week. It's really simple as I am following my tried and true themed day template methods as mentioned in daily fill 91  making sure I am choosing the best times for the different types of tasks I normally have to do. This little black book is broken up into multiple categories such as family, spouse, parenting, companies, and household needs. From there I list out the mandatory needs of each section breaking tasks down from order of importance followed by checkboxes to fill in progress.. This process probably takes about 30 minutes and is crucial to the weekly process of keeping up with my life. From there I am able to plan my Monday and basically drag and drop my tasks from one physical to digital format. I recently decided to drop my 3 notebook planning process (thanks to completing the mastery journal ) and move to a hybrid format that I picked up from Michael Hyatt. This process is repeated nightly as I find it healthy to develop a consistent scheduling pattern to keep your head in the game and your mind on your matters. This digital approach also allows me to add reminders and calendar notifications to all my devices to ensure there are no loose ends in my pipeline. I find it very helpful as I am normally a forgetful personal consisting looking for a minute to take a breather and reflect on life (a.k.a. be lazy) The Weekly Challenge: For this week's challenge, I want you to write everything you'd like to get done this week on a sheet of paper with checkboxes, filter them all out into each day of the week revolving around the days that work best for you according to your schedule. After that, you must post an Instagram story or post doing the following:  Showing you working on our weekly challenge. Tagging @drummersilike #drummersilike and #drumtrepreneur! Winners get a free 30-minute consultation call with, 3 months of access to Drummers I Like Pro and a mention on the podcast and an invite to join me on a roundtable with this month's winners of our contest.  Daily Fill #96: Drum Lessons: Levels of Musicianship Finale- Master and Grow | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 20:57

Welcome to the Monday edition of the Daily Fill with our lead educator Scott Jackson! Every Monday Scott drops into give us a quick drum lesson that we can apply to our playing right now! Let's get started... Over the last couple of weeks, we have been discussing a very subtle and introspective topic. And that topic is, objectively judging your technique and more importantly your Sound behind the drum set. Similar to the previous lessons, this week we focus on the start of the 3rd Primary Class of a Drummer the "Advanced Class" within this class falls Level 7, 8, and 9 however; we will only discuss Level 9. We also discuss the "Elite Class" which is Level 10. Let's break down the Advanced Class. The Advanced Class: This class expands over three different levels, and is the class where you really come into your own. At this point in your drum career, the main focus is mastering what you know while still focusing on learning some new ideas or taking old ideas new the next level. What I mean by that is, you focus more on having extremely consistent time keeping within a groove and soloing. You take an old fill or lick and permutate it, play it in a new subdivision, or add more notes to it. You begin to focus on Mastering what you know to help you in your performing and teaching career So in this stage, I recommend private lessons an elite player that knows what it takes to get to the career you want to have Level 9: 8-10 years of playing experience: Master and Grow   At this point, you can play whatever you want, and if you can't you can sight read it or learn it in a few minutes. The focus here is gaining more experience to further hone your skills, and you start to focus on building your career further in the drum world. You begin to focus on getting gigs such as touring, teaching, online lessons, clinics, masterclasses, recording sessions, local gigs. You are at the or close to the highest performance level available. Level 10: 10 years and onward   This is the final level. You can now play whatever you want, and have opportunities to play with some of the best musicians on the planet. Your name is known on a national or international audience, and you are an influence to many drummers around the world. You have become a member of legendary drummers. I want to emphasis that these levels are meant to be used as a road map. It is for you to objectively judge your own skills, and figure out where you would like to go next. For a more detailed breakdown, CLICK HERE Remember, Each stage will be different for everyone, and over the coming weeks I will outline each Level via my drum lessons page. The outline is not to tell you what you should be learning, but what you could be learning. Again, this is a very personal guide and each level will vary for each drummer. However, by the end of this series, you should be able to write down the skills you are working on and how skillfully you perform them to determine which Level you are in. This topic is extremely subtle, and sometimes can make you confront areas of your playing you haven't thought of before. So, just stay with me, and I guarantee you will have a new positive outlook on your Development as a drummer.  Dave Weckl and Larnell Lewis: Yamaha 50th Anniversary | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 45:27

Welcome back to another episode of the Drummers I Like Podcast! Today is an extremely special episode in which Kevin, Scott and myself had the opportunity to chat down with Dave Weckl and Larnell Lewis during their performance during the 50th anniversary for Yamaha drums. The experience was enlightening, humbling, and overall a once in a lifetime type feeling. I can’t thank Yamaha enough for offering us this honor and even more so for their professionalism and flexibility. They truly are a company that looks out for everyone in their community and you know that’s number one to the team at Drummers I Like! Dave and Larnell only had a short amount of time today and in order for me to allow my team the chance to be involved, we decided to put together 3 short questions. In the interviews, they are split and asked by all three of us in the same order. The answers are both unique in their own right as well as inspiring. The questions: Who is the most influential drummer of all time? Why does Yamaha best represent your sound? What’s number one on your playlist right now? As previously mentioned, Dave and Larnell but give detailed answers that both held strong so be sure to listen in to hear why. Once again, We would like to thank Larnell Lewis, Dave Weckl, Charlie Banks, Michael LaPick and entire team over at Yamaha Drums! It has been an honor to know you all! We would also like to once again bring light to the Yamaha Drums 50th year anniversary. This industry is one that definitely delivers some hard knocks and knowing that this small business created something really big within this community and others is really impressive to me! - Richard Please take the time to leave a review as it helps rank our show and get it out to more listeners like you! WELCOME TO THE KEVIN'S RANTS EDITION OF THE DAILY FILL WITH OUR OTHER BEARDED PODCAST HOST MR. KEVIN CIARLELLI What's going on today? Hello, it's Kevin with you today for another rant! On this episode, we have our first ever guest on Kevin's Rant. Scott Jackson will be joining us to have a very close look at drumsticks. As a matter of fact, the rant was so long we're going to break it up into two parts.  Today in part one. We will be going over the different types of wood you can expect to find most drumstick manufacturers using these days. The big three types of wood. Maple, Hickory, and Oak. This segment can help build your knowledge of the characteristics of these different types of wood. Scott also touches on some of the exotic woods that some stick makers use. The next topic we get into is tip shapes and how they can affect the sound and feel of the drumstick. Scott spends a lot of time explaining his take on what you can expect from some of the different types of tip styles. There are quite a few styles but we try our best to break down how you can tell what would best fit several different scenarios. That concludes our first part on drumsticks. We are really excited to help everyone understand what you can expect in a drumstick just by knowing its parts. In part two of this series, we will be digging into the taper, diameter and sizing, length, and coatings. We can't wait to bring you next week's episode!  Daily Fill: The stimulus response gap | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:43

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Daily Fill with our Owner and founder Richard Ducat! Every Tuesday Richard gives us a dose of motivation, guidance, life hacks, marketing tips, and more! Today’s quote “ where focus goes, energy flows “ - Tony Robbins On today's episode, we talk about being proactive with your playing, your career, and your approach to life. We all have those reactive moments, you know, the guy cuts you off at a light and you roll your eyes or raise your hands at the driver. Sometimes it’s those reactive moments that get us punched in the face by the giant muscle man driving that truck who you flipped off. I know that’s a little much but you know what I mean. The Stimulus-Response gap is the time between the action against you and your response to it. The better we can master this moment in time the better we can handle anything that is thrown at us. One thing I have always struggled with is my lack of patience with trying to learn to new songs on the drums. Sometimes my hands and legs just can’t make it happen and in the past, it would be like me to toss my sticks in frustration. My patience game was always weak growing up and even after learning this principle, practicing it, living it, and even teaching it I found myself having trouble applying it in every chaotic situation that came about. One thing that helps me navigate through the mess is always keeping the end in mind. In an easy way to focus on your priorities as a person is by thinking about what you want people saying about you at your funeral. I know, it’s morbid… but really think about it. Did you want to be remembered as a guy that worked really hard? Do you want to be remembered as a good parent? How about being remembered for helping your community? Put this into serious consideration as you put together your day to day to-do lists and 1, 2, and 5-year plans. It can really help clarify things for you. So let’s apply this to our lives right now! Ask yourself… What’s something I consistently have negative reactions to and how can I change work to expand the Stimulus-response gap we have during our typical quick reaction response! That’s it for today’s episode of the Daily Fill! Tune in next week for more motivation, more guidance and more practical tips that can be applied to your day today! Do you like my chats?  Daily Fill #93: Drum Lessons: Levels of Musicianship Part 4: Master and Sustain | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:11

Similar to the previous lessons, this week we focus on the start of the 3rd Primary Class of a Drummer the "Advanced Class" within this class falls Level 7, 8, and 9 however; we will only discuss Level 7 and 8 this week Let's break down the Advanced Class. You take an old fill or lick and permutate it, play it in a new subdivision, or add more notes to it. You begin to focus on Mastering what you know to help you in your performing and teaching career So in this stage, I recommend private lessons an elite player that knows what it takes to get to the career you want to have Level 7: 7-10 years of playing experience: Master What You Know   New Skills: you continue to master new subdivisions like quintuplets septuplets, and new poly-rhythms, you also work on shifting between all subdivisions. You continue to learn how to read these new rhythms and master reading in any time signature. Styles: Styles continue to develop, in this stage you are focused on mastering the styles you know on the drum set. Exact time keeping and consistency becomes a major focus Time Keeping: Being more consistent while mastering how to be "center" " behind" or "in front" of the beat. Level 8: 9-12 years of playing experience: Master and Sustain In this level, you are focused on not just creating more opportunities in your career, but also sustaining your career. You have probably quit your day job and our doing a great number of things to create and sustain a viable career with drums. You could be teaching, performing, making online lessons, making YouTube Drum Covers, and so on. This stage is a stage of gaining experience and mastering the skills required through that experience. In pursuit of this, one thing will happen you will begin to create a sustainable career within music. A quick note here, this is also the level that you start to find your niche or your strengths as a drummer. You start to realize what you a really good at and you realize you have two options. 1: You could solely focus on those strengths and make your career that. An example is, being a rock or pop drummer, a gospel or rnb drummer, or a jazz drummer. 2: You can try to master a number of styles in order to have more opportunities. Whichever you prefer is perfect, and that choice is yours to make. No one else can make that for you. Your journey with Music and playing drums, in the end, is something that is YOURS to take. So, a lot of decisions will ultimately come down to YOU. People can help you or advise you, but yous till make the choices all the way down to what you play, how you play, and how often do you practice etc. Hope this helps. Now... go drum. For a more detailed breakdown, I will be posting a PDF file with the last Podcast of this series that will available for download.  Bianca Richardson - The Key to success is being everywhere at once | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:06:52

Welcome back to another episode of the Drummers I Like Podcast! This week Kevin and I are back on track and excited to be chatting with the talented, successful, and true drumtrepreneur Bianca Richardson. Bianca is an absolute class act and this episode truly reflects what happens when three drummers get caught in the moment. Bianca has played with a multitude of highly praised artists including the legendary Marcus Miller. About our guest: Bianca Richardson is a professional drummer, educator, and touring artist with a background that truly preserves the idea that you have to be work diligently without sacrificing prudence and delivery. Her assertive nature and ability to dominate all styles of music have put her in endorsement positions with Turkish Cymbals, Protec, Vector Pedals, GoPro, and Evans Drumheads! Her powerful skillset has given her opportunities to work with a handful of superstar artists such as Artur Menezes, Marcus Miller, and Nick Walker. What started off as a stand against sexism turned into the motivation behind the drums that would grow into an extremely successful future and jam-packed experience. Getting her drumline licks in behind the bass drum really gave her an advantage on drumset as she grew some pretty solid chops and some serious control with her hands. Key Points from today's episode: * Drive and motivation can be converted into some serious chops if focused correctly. * Taking advantage of every opportunity can get you that much closer to your goals. * The Key to success is learning to be everywhere at once. Bianca is a success machine and we can't wait to see what the next few years bring to her on her journey to the top. Her unparalleled approach to this whole drum game is something not many drummers have attuned to so if you're looking for a new path to explore for success take some notes. WELCOME TO THE KEVIN'S RANTS EDITION OF THE DAILY FILL WITH OUR OTHER BEARDED PODCAST HOST MR. KEVIN CIARLELLI What's going on today? Hello, it's Kevin with you today for another rant! On this episode, I want to take a minute to revisit the Promark Firegrain drumsticks. With more time playing with these sticks, I believe it's time look at how they have continued to hold up as well as how the sticks feel. Steve Clifford also really shines on the newest album The Amulet. So go check it out. Listen out for more of my experience with the Firegrain's. I won't spoil the show but I can say I'm pleasantly surprised. Promark has really done well with this line of sticks. Now with a busy weekend gigging with the Rebound 5A size under my belt.  Daily Fill #91: Plan your perfect day in 5 minutes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:43

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Daily Fill with our Owner and founder Richard Ducat! Every Tuesday Richard gives us a dose of motivation, guidance, life hacks, marketing tips, and more! On today's episode, we talk about my favorite topic in the entire world. Daily Planning through Journaling. It is by far my number one key to success and how I keep track of my entire life every day. The best part is that It only takes me 5-10 minutes a day to prep it. Step 1: Template it and ride Ok.... There is a big misconception with templates and it all starts with the issue of repetitive tasking. Trust me... This will not be an issue if you are creating a Journal theme for each day. This is something that plays a big role in your journaling process. It's a lot easy to choose a specific day of the week for different types of tasks. Example: I choose Monday and my most coveted day. This is the day in which I need the most time to focus on my tasks and abilities to structure the important tasks that span my week. So on Monday I write content, follow up on email, handle tedious tasks like planning and strategy along with the recordings of two of my podcasts. That's it. Tuesdays and Thursdays are my outreach days and the days I try and schedule my phone calls, in-person meetings, and guest podcasts. This is also a school day for my Son so I cram a lot into a small section of time which is why I choose tasks like graphics, content curation and quick turn-around items that I wouldn't need much time to handle. Wednesday is my cool down day and the that focuses on big-picture tasks like the team and company goals, organization, long-term strategy and more. Friday is my follow-up day. I try and stay away from heavy tasks because I am so anxious to hang with my son all weekend that I don't perform at my highest abilities. Step 2: Evaluate, adjust, review. Every week This is the most important step in the simple 2 step process to Daily Planning and Journaling. Every week you need to take a step back and evaluate your week. What worked for you and what didn't work for you? What tasks did you easily complete and what tasks were truly impossible to get to? One issue I constantly face with my journaling is scheduling tasks that are not conducive to my company goals and needs. What I end up doing is skipping the task or pushing it to another day to waste a section of my journal. You must prioritize and create a master calendar for all your most important recurring weekly tasks is a smart move( I will cover this in a future episode). Once you get through your first month of templating your daily planners you will see a pattern of what does and doesn't work for you. So, what's the point, Rich? The point is being the best version of yourself that you can be. The point is succeeding as a drumtrepreneur, being the best employee you can be, being a great teammate, and being able to excel for the better of your personal career in music and in any organization that you have the pleasure of working with! I know this value doesn't apply to everyone but I like to think that most drummers really work hard to be the best they can be all across the board. Got a working template that is kicking ass for you? Send me an email at richard@drummersilike.com and let me know how it's working for you! Also, if you think my templates would help you then I would be stoked to start creating digital versions of them for you all! Just let me know! Big shout out to Sofa King Podcast for this week's mention! Along with the big bag of hot sauce and stickers, I got to check out their studios and they were beyond impressive. ALSO!!! Big shout out to everyone that has recently joined the private facebook group! If you want to join

Daily Fill #90: Drum Lessons: Levels of Musicianship Part 3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:39

Welcome to the Monday edition of the Daily Fill with our lead educator Scott Jackson! Every Monday Scott drops into give us a quick drum lesson that we can apply to our playing right now! Let's get started... Over the next couple of weeks, I wanted to talk about a very subtle and introspective topic. And that topic is, objectively judging your technique and more importantly your Sound behind the drum set. Similar to last week, this week we focus on the start of the Second Primary Class of a Drummer the "Intermediate Class" within these class falls Level 3, 4, 5 and Level 6, however; we will only discuss Level 5 and 6 this week Let's break down the Intermediate Class. The Intermediate Class: This class expands over four different levels, and Level 5 is the pinnacle turning point in your study of drums. This is the level that you either climb the mountain of drumming or you decide, "I am happy with what I can play" Level 6 is the moment you break free, sort of... So in this stage, I recommend private lessons at least TWICE a month either in person or online via Skype or any other platform. If you want to be self-taught, this is the time for you to seek guidance. Second, I recommend increasing your practice time. Instead of 30 minutes a day of practice time, amp it up to one hour a day. Level 5: 4-6 years of playing experience This is the most demanding level in your development behind the drum set. You are learning a ton of different concepts all at the same time. New styles, grooves, rudiments, techniques, soloing skills, reading, rhythms, and anything else drum related. You will have to be behind the drum set more and more! Practicing more will help you through this stage. The less you practice the longer you will be here... So, practice and just don't practice but practice SMART. Breakdown of Skills you could learn: The Standard 26 Rudiments, Styles such as Swing, Afro-Cuban, Progressive rock/metal, Soca, Calypso, Samba, Salsa, Guanguanco, Rhumba, Africa styles, etc. Furthermore, you will be learning new rhythms, reading rudiment or snare drum solos. Performing in Jazz Band, Concert Band, Symphony, Cover Bands, or an Original Band. You will start to learn Linear Style of playing Drums Level 6: 5-7 years of playing experience Level 6 is a big stage too. You are not quite done studying drums, however; compared to when you first started you are extremely comfortable behind the drum set. Although, you notice something is missing and it can be frustrating. That thing is being creative, finding your "voice" behind the drum set, and is becoming a better musician not just a better drum set player. The drum set is an awkward instrument to play, so you start to put more time in becoming comfortable behind the drum set. So, a primary focus during this stage is Time Keeping while playing a Groove and(NEW AWARENESS) Timekeeping while you SOLO... For a more detailed breakdown, I will be posting a PDF file with the last Podcast of this series that will available for download. Remember, Each stage will be different for everyone, and over the coming weeks I will outline each Level via my drum lessons page. So, just stay with me,

Daily Fill #86: Drum Lessons: Levels of Musicianship Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 24:21

Similar to last week, this week we focus on the start of the Second Primary Class of a Drummer the "Intermediate Class" with in these class falls Level 3, 4, 5 and Level 6, however; we will only discuss Level 3 and 4 this week Let's break down the Intermediate Class. The Intermediate Class: This class expands over four different levels, and you face more challenges at this stage than any other. In the level 3 and 4 of the intermediate class, you face technical and conceptual challenges, but you overcome with ease. However you confront an aspect of your playing you have never had to confront before... So in this stage, I recommend private lessons at least once a month either in person or online via Skype or any other platform. Second, I would use prerecorded lesson videos to supplement anything you are learning during your private instruction. Level 3: 2-4 years of playing experience This level is actually a huge leap in your playing ability because your hard work and diligence has started to pay off. You can now start comfortably applying EVERYTHING you have learned the first 1 to 3 years you have been practicing. You are learning new rudiments, beats, and concepts, but you can learn them a little easier now because music is related. Although, there will still be things you can't do yet, you still gain excitement and confidence because you are finally feeling more comfortable behind the drum set. Level 4: 3-5 years of playing experience This is another big leap in your playing ability because know you can almost play any song from the radio. If your young, maybe this is the stage were you join the Jazz Band, Concert Band, or Symphony at your school. If your an adult, maybe you have joined a cover band, community big band, or an originals band. This stage has some ups and downs though. The ups are you start to gain a little recognition because your performance skills have become more honed, and people notice that. The downs are because you are trying new styles of music you run into more plateaus that you will have overcome. The difficult part of those plateaus is some are technical issues, but a majority of the walls you will have to break through are conceptual. This is where you start searching for your own voice on the drum set for the first time. For a more detailed breakdown, I will be posting a PDF file with the last Podcast of this series that will available for download. Remember, Each stage will be different for everyone, and over the coming weeks I will outline each Level via my drum lessons page.
