#77: Mike Ciprari - The Stepping Stones To Success | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:52:21

What's up Drumtrepreneurs! Welcome back to another episode of the Drummers I Like Podcast! This week we are chatting with Mike Ciprari, Co-founder of SJC drums and the epitome of what we here at Drummers I Like consider a true "drumtrepreneur".  Coming from an Entrepreneurial family that had plenty of experience creating success Mike was built from the ground up to handle the serious up's and down's of business. From creating his first warehouse for drum building in his grandma's basement to sneaking into Vans Warped Tour for almost two weeks straight pretending to be a paying vendor Mike has done it all. On today's show, we really dig deep into Mike's background, SJC's rise to success, his journey being on the television show the Profit and everything he learned from super entrepreneur Marcus Lemonis. About our guest: Mike Ciprari is the Co-founder of SJC drums, an entrepreneur, and most importantly a loving Father and Husband. His work ethic and attention to detail for each and everyone of his customers has been the beating heart behind SJC drums and their rapid growth over the last 15 years. Key Points from today's episode: * You've got to trust your instinct: Mike takes us back to the beginning days of his musical career as he found punk rock, fell in love with 311 and started to invest his adolescent time into understanding the in's and outs of starting his first punk band. * Take me away from the norm: As he and his brother grew up it was a true competitive spirit that defined their ability to truly succeed when two brilliant minds started building the company that would change the percussion game for the better. * You got to come original: Mike takes up deep into his experience on The Profit, meeting Marcus Lemonis and refresh being on that show really gave him. Something that really stands out in this section is Mike's deep appreciation towards the idea that when he met Marcus it felt like his journey had just begun. Mike was hands down one of my favorite guests of all time as we truly bridged the gap between drummer and business owner gauging a true understanding of what it takes to an entrepreneur and most importantly a drumtrepreneur BUT WAIT... WHATS UP DRUMTREPRENEURS! Today we chat with a very close friend of mine, a serious inspiration, and a big part of the reason I had opportunities in the music industry. @devjent gets into some pretty dirty details as he breaks down the pitfalls he endured and the protection he didn’t give himself when he decided to sign his life away for an opportunity that was not what he expected. Read the Fine Print: Devin gives us some insight into contractual obligations and learning to read people in the moment. He emphasizes that artists need to keep emotions aside and really focus on the fine print if they want true career longevity. Paying it forward: I dig deep into the passions involved with Devin's career change and decision to start managing and guiding up and coming artists. Our hopes with today's show were to give our drumtrepreneurs a true insight into what happens when you don't cover your tracks and protect yourself from the bigger challenges that may come with any decision you make in this extremely volatile industry. I want to thank Devin once again for coming on and telling his story to our listeners and allowing us some real insight into the darker side of the music industry.  Daily Fill #118: Drum Lessons – Organize Your Practice Time | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:27

Hey Everyone! Welcome back to another Lesson! In this week's episode of Drum Lessons with Scott Jackson, Scott explains how to stay focused while you are practicing to make sure your mind stays SHARP and FOCUSED the entire time you practice each day! Breaking up your practice time into smaller or larger time segments is a great process to have in your practice routine. Each day the amount of time you spend on a concept might change, however; the key here is to organize that time. This organization of time into segments will keep your mind focused. How? Why? Well, because our mind is wired to detect nuance, so if we are changing up what we practice ever 5, 10, 15, or 20 minutes. This will help our brain stay IN the moment so we don't get side tracked. As drummers, it is easy to get distracted or be overwhelmed with what to do. Well, this concept of creating Time Segments for your Practice will help you not feel so overwhelmed. Also, it might take sometime to create longer segments for yourself just remember to put away any distractions that will get in the way of your practice. The reason longer segments may take time is you have to train your mind to focus for that amount of time Key Points From Today's Lesson: 1. 5 Areas of Practice: Technique, Coordination, Fills/Solo Chops, Improvise, Recording Analysis 2. Analyze Recordings: Remember to set aside time to analyze your recordings 3. Take Short Breaks: In between each segment, remember to take a short 2-5 minute break to reset the mind. That is it for today's lesson! Enjoy! Go Practice! Please take the time to leave a review as it helps rank our show and get it out to more listeners like you!  Daily Fill: Anna Cucciardo - Owning a Music Lessons School | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:45

Hey Everyone! Scott Here bringing you another Lesson! This week we have a very special guest, Anna Cucciardo whom owns and operates a Music Lessons Tutoring School. She gets into the details of operating a business. It is jam packed with knowledge that can help anyone take their career to the next level. About our guest: I was born & raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, where I continue to reside. Since I began drumming in 1997, I have been involved with many different musical projects (please see the partial list at the bottom of this page). My current musical undertakings include being Director & Educator at Music Time Academy in Livermore and playing drums with the bands: Muncie (formerly Go Kart Mozart, Kid Moe), West Grand Boulevard, TV Mike & the Scarecrowes, Professor Jones, Tory & the Teasers, and Mama Foxxy & the Whiskey Gypsy Rebels. Since graduating from The University of California, Berkeley in 2006, I have regularly toured across the United States, averaging 100+ live performances per year. Although I studied music in school (earning a Music minor at UCB & Certificates in Commercial Music and Recording Arts from Diablo Valley College), I feel that the process of teaching and practicing has been a more effective music education. Since 2008, I have worked with hundreds of students both in groups & one-on-one, with ages ranging as young as 4 months old in my “Family Music Time” class all the way up to senior citizens. I enjoy exploring the underlying patterns of music alongside my students, encouraging natural, organic musical development that often mirrors other sorts of language development. Whether teaching or performing, my intention and source of motivation is to share the joy of music in the hopes that we can all feel a little more connected!   Key Points from today's episode: * Getting Started: Anna Explains how she came to own her Private Lessons School Music Time Academy * Operating a Business: Anna talks about what it takes to turn a business around and make it successful * Learning From Benny Greb: Anna reminisces about attending one of Benny Greb's drum camps.  Daily Fill #113: Great Practice Habits – Figure Out Your Goals | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 17:00

Figure Out Your Goals: Why are Goals so Important? What is Up Everybody! We are continuing our study of Great Habits for Practicing, and today we Setting Goals! This is the most important step in the process of achieving what you want as a player and in your drum career. If you want to have any level of Success, you NEED TO SET GOALS. So, how do we set goals? Well, there are many ways to set goals, but I am going to show you a few things I do to set goals. How to Set Your Goals. * Long Term: Your longer-term goals will consist of two aspects. *  Ultimate Goal: What is your ultimate Goal as a Drummer and with your Career? Is it learning a certain technique? Is your career goal playing with a Large Market Pop Music Act, like Katy Perry? This Ultimate Goal is what YOU DREAM about doing with Drums. If it is teaching, that is fine too. As long as you have an idea of what you want to do, and this might change as your life goes on. This goal should be very big and vague at first because as we work backward you will figure out the details to accomplishing the goals * Annualized Goals: Once you have your Ultimate goal, you can now work backward, and the first step is to figure out what you need to do every year to reach your goals. So if you want to Master Double stroke rolls, then you need to make sure your annual goal is to hit certain tempi with your double strokes. For example, January 1st, 2017 I will play double strokes using 8th notes and play at 60bpm, however; I will be playing 8th notes at 250bpm by the end of the year. Something like that. Your annual goals are a little more detailed than your Ultimate Goal * Quarterly Goals: This will be your goals within a three month period. So, you can manage your yearly goals. Your quarterly goals will start to break down how to achieve your Annual Goals. So, for example, if you have an annual goal of Mastering Double Strokes, you can break up the goals between three-month segments. (January-March 60bpm-110bpm) (April-June 110-160bpm) (July-September 160-200) (October-December 200-250) Remember You want to AIM HIGH. Push yourself to become WAY BETTER than you think you are capable of. * Monthly Goals: This will start to break down the Details of your Quarterly Goals. The Monthly Goals should reflect your quarterly goals. This is the detail of HOW you will go about achieving your quarterly goals. So back to the double stroke example. Your Monthly Goal might look like this (March 1st 80bpm March 30th 100bpm so 1 bpm increase every 2 days with a 1 bpm boost at the end of each week, and 1 bpm boost on the last day of the month.) * Weekly Goals: The weekly goals will push towards your monthly goals. In essence, this will be your weekly practice schedule. I like to layout my entire week of practice ahead of time. Now, I know unexpected events can pop up that is okay. If you can't make up for the time lost, your next move would be to prioritize what your goals for that week or day. By laying out your entire week, you will also finish the last Goal set. * Daily Goals: This is your Daily Routine of Goal Achievement. This will break down WHAT you practice and for HOW long you practice. The key point to remember is it's not about how long you practice, but the quality of practice you achieve during that time span. So, you need to record yourself, listen back to the recordings, and analyze your recordings because that is the only way to truly hear yourself. We will get into this process later. The Weekly Contest: Send a picture of you Documenting your successes while practicing for at least 5 days, and you will get a shout out from Drummers I Like on our Instagram Story. This will be a reoccurring challenge each week. Meaning you can enter at least once every week Here's How To Enter

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Daily Fill with our Owner and founder Richard Ducat! Every Tuesday Richard gives us a dose of motivation, guidance, life hacks, marketing tips, and more! On today's episode, we are back with week 5 of the Drumtrepreneur series featuring special guest Michael Levine! You may remember Michael from episode 15 of the Drummers I Like Podcast back in 2016! Today I wanted to bring Mike on to talk about the business of drum tech and what it takes to successfully do this full time. I've always enjoyed the role of drum tech for a million reasons but the one that stood out the most was the ability to network, create passive income, and take long extended breaks. I loved the idea of setting yourself up for 365 days of working between different bands. You get to travel, meet new people, eat new foods, see beautiful venues, explore amazing territories and the best part is that you get to do it with your best friends. I always considered it the new "secret millionaire" and after catching up with Mike a few weeks back I knew he was perfect to launch month 2 of the Drumtrepreneur series. This episode is full of extremely valuable information that will help you get a grip on the drum tech world. A few things we cover in this episode: Getting your foot in the drum tech door: Mike breaks down the specific steps that led to him getting his first gig along with what it took to ensure a year of employment on the road. The worst experience Mike's ever had: Mike breaks down his worst drumtrepreneurial experience in a detailed story of a wasted flight and an opportunity that was broken, to begin with. Maintaining your income stream: We get deep into the idea of multi-band touring and what it takes to ensure your income stream throughout the entire year. The Weekly Challenge: Leave a review on iTunes with a short explanation on how this episode may have helped you or how you will use some of Mike's tips to help get you started on your path to success!  Daily Fill: Transcribing Your Drumming | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:44

Welcome to the Drum Lesson with our Lead Educator Scott Jackson! Every Monday Scott gives us a dose of knowledge, advice, insight, and more Today's quote: " Can you remember who you were before the world told you who you should be? Habits of a GREAT Practice. Transcribe Your Drumming Have you ever seen those movies in Hollywood where the main story is a person that can USE 100% OF THEIR BRAIN, and like magic they have superpowers? Well, I can't show how do acquire superpowers, but I can tell you how to increase your learning ability by targeting both Hemispheres of your brain. You NEED to learn how to tap into to the power of your Brain! Today's lesson is that first step. Three Primary Processes of Learning * Hearing/Listening - We hear and try to imitate. Example: Speech * Visual - We see and try to imitate Example: Dancing or Painting * Reading - We read and try to reproduce Example: Drum Exercise!!! Your Brain is an analytical machine, and the more you understand about its processes the more you can tap into. SO, how do you tap into the power of your own mind? Well, the three processes above is the first step. So let's talk about LISTENING. I pride myself on being a great listener. While talking to my wife, I can be on my phone, and still be able to hear, understand, and process every word she says because I understand that I can divert a percentage of my focus to listen to hear while still performing my task on the phone... The same goes for music. Try this exercise: Next time you are listening to a song focus on the different instruments you hear one by one. THEN imagine you are floating above them like a bird, and try to listen to all the instruments as they work together. Second, focus on the drum part and try to speak or sing that drum part. You will stumble at first, but keep trying over and over again. The results? Oral Imitation Visual: The Old saying comes to mind, "Seeing is Believing" Well, this is pretty darn accurate. Why? Because a lot of the brains functions are for defensive purposes. Like YOUR LIFE IS IN DANGER type purposes. So, when you SEE something happen your brain is more willing to accept it as TRUE information. It will not deflect it as DANGEROUS. HAHAHA! It is true... our brain's primary function is to help us stay alive. So, we have to understand that, and then we have to help our brain understand that AS DRUMMERS most of what we do is not dangerous. Difficult at times, but not dangerous. Visual Learning is the main process of learning because we can learn how to imitate by watching. For example, a majority of dancers learn this way. OR artist who paint real life imitations of flowers, buildings, or people. Reading: This is perhaps the most common one, but there is a snag. You have to know the written language! Dang... So, I am just gonna quit! Hahaha! No way! You need to just sit down and learn how to read music. Reading music is so easy that I have taught 7-year-old drummers to read in 7/4, 3/4, 5/4, 7/8, and 5/8. Did I just lose you? I hope not. If so, you need to go research time signatures (TIME SIGNATURES ARE VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND) The power of reading is Great because it lets your brain do what it does best. ANALYZE, RECOGNIZE, and PROCESS!. For example, we have the ability to transcribe a drum beat by our favorite drummer, so we transcribe it. (see what I did there) NOW, you can read it, which forces your brain to break down the individual parts and recognize the sequence. In turn, that helps you learn it fast. These 3 steps are key to the learning process! Listening, Seeing, and Reading helps your brain learn at least 3 times more effective than before. If you only use Listening to learn, then your goal is to tap into the other two processes. That's it for today's Lesson!

 #74: Chad Wolf – The Drum Tech’s guide to success | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:29

What's up Drumtrepreneurs! Welcome back to another episode of the Drummers I Like Podcast! This week we are chatting with Chad Wolf! Chad is OBSESSED with drums and currently plays with the prog rock sensation MRKTS and is the drum tech for both Luke Holland and Virgil Donati! Chad is equipped with some serious chops, an amazing volume of drum knowledge, and some serious road experience. This one is going to be good! About our guest: Chad caught our eye a few months back when we came across a video of him shredding some jams to his band! His playing is over the top amazing and it has literally consumed me over the past few weeks. Today's chat takes down the path of Chad as he breaks down the entire story behind who he is and what he is doing today! Key Points from today's episode: * Chad digs deep into his background as he explains the early days of his drum career. It all started when his guitar shredding dad had a friend over for a jam. After leaving the drum kit at his house for an extended stay Chad began to pick up on his inner drummer as he would spend his time studying his dad's jam sessions and learning the songs they would play. * Chad talks a little bit about what it was like working as a drum tech for the great Virgil Donati as he breaks down the story behind getting the gig, what Virgil was like as his employer, and the amazing experience he gained touring with such a legend. * What kind of drummers I like podcast would this be without Kevin digging into Chad's setup and preference as a player and as a drum-tech. Chad is a young gun with a bright future in this industry. He has already built up a hefty resume, teamed up with some serious players in the music game, and really spent the time to hone in on his craft. His networking skills, ability to negotiate his deals and attention to detail crown him as a true drumtrepreneur and straight up Role Model for any drummer looking to find his place in this giant industry.  Daily Fill #110: Kevin’s Drum Rants – Paiste 900 Series Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:00

WELCOME TO THE KEVIN'S RANTS EDITION OF THE DAILY FILL WITH OUR OTHER BEARDED PODCAST HOST MR. KEVIN CIARLELLI What's going on today? Welcome back to Kevin's Gear Rants! Today we will be talking about Paiste's 900 series of cymbals for the second time! Let's get back to it! Thanks for joining us for this deep dive into the Paiste 900 series. We start things out after a bit of a refresher. Then, we talk about the hi-hats in this line. They offer quite a few cool options and I really like one of the hi-hats in this line so listen out for that Then we get into the China cymbal of the 900 series. This cymbal really continues with the signature sound of this line and will have many applications. I compare this cymbal with another from Paiste that I myself use, so I have some fun comparisons here to help you get an idea of what to expect with this China. Last but definitely not least is the splash cymbal. The 900 series gong sound comes out in this splash quite strong and has some neat complex sounds for a great priced product. I also talk in this section about the possibility of creating some stack options using the crash/chinas from this series or the splash/china. I think there would be a few cool options! That's it for today's episode of the daily fill! Want to add to the conversation?  Daily Fill: Following up with your goals | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 28:24

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Daily Fill with our Owner and founder Richard Ducat! Every Tuesday Richard gives us a dose of motivation, guidance, life hacks, marketing tips, and more! Today's quote: " It doesn't matter where you are coming from. All that matters is where you are going." - Brian Tracey On today's episode, we are back with a quick check up regarding the last 4 weeks of our drumtrepreneurial journey towards focus, discipline, and execution. I want to spend today's episode reviewing our month as an exercise of refreshing the mind on everything we just worked so hard towards. In the last few weeks we have covered the following: * Decluttering your schedule and clearing your mind * Balancing your schedule, your week, and your next 90 days * Automation tools and how to make them work for your schedule * Decompressing and taking a break So as we look back on everything we worked so hard for we must continue to refresh, evaluate, restructure, and repeat. This is probably the most important part of this continual process as it requires us to continually pick apart our actions and re-engineer them for success. It probably took me 6 months total to really get a hang on doing this and forcing it into my circadian rhythm each and every day but I'm telling you it is worth every bit of effort. Remember... You can always go back to the previous four episodes if you need a refresh on everything.
