 Daily Fill #129: Stages of Self-Awareness | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:52

Hey Everyone! Welcome back to another Daily Fill Drum Lesson! In this week's episode of Drum Lessons with Scott Jackson, Scott begins to explain the stages of being self-aware. Self Awareness. What a huge topic to cover... Like seriously... it's huge. Anyways, for musicians this is a really important thing to understand because throughout the different stages you will be gaining the skills need to become self-aware. They really do go hand and hand. As you gain the technical skills necessary to be a great drummer, on the other side your brain will be able to free up CPU and do more tasks on top of playing drums. IT's truly remarkable. So, this week I am doing a quick introduction into this, and then we will break down each stage. Key Points From Today's Lesson: 1. Confusion- Everything is new 2. Differentiation- You can start to recognize patterns 3. Identify- You can identify your role within a band or other musicians 4. Permanence- Your skills are honed, but your still improving on a lot of areas 5. Mastery- Your skills are solidified 6. Ultra Instinct- You simply react with your decisions, and your decisions are always good. That is it for today's lesson! Enjoy! Go Practice!  Daily Fill: Drum Lesson - Turn Your Beat Around | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:25

Hey Everyone! Welcome back to another Daily Fill Drum Lesson! In this week's episode of Drum Lessons with Scott Jackson, Scott explains some simple methods on how to learn from your mistakes. Furthermore, he talks about not dwelling on mistakes as a negative, but rather embracing those mistakes. This lesson is more about your mindset. I titled it "Turn Your Beat Around" because that phrase is a metaphor explaining that you can't be negative. You need to turn that around and be positive. Also, it's a clever way to hopefully make Gloria Estefan's song "Turn the Beat Around" relevant again... Hahaha! Okay, serious talk time... As musicians, we automatically pick out all of the "BAD" things we do, and we beat ourselves up about it over and over. Instead, we should do the opposite. Let me tell you a short story. The brain can control anything we do, and how we feel. The brain controls our focus, our heart beat, our lungs, our eyes, ears, and everything else. So, if we constantly beat ourselves about about mistakes. What do you think will happen? I can tell you. I ran into this about 5 years ago... I was getting hypercritical of my playing, and I was being pulled in a lot of different ways. I wanted to play drum set, but I was learning all of the other percussion instruments too. I did not have the time to invest behind the drum set. On top of that, I was hypercritical and beating myself up which leads to two things. Worrying about time constraints leads to stress, and beating yourself up leads to self-doubt. I quickly spiraled into depression. Nothing serious... but for about a month I was feeling really down, burnt out, and struggling to find the passion I once had for music. How did I overcome that? First, I looked at my mistakes and realized they are things I can fix. Second, I stopped beating myself up. Key Points From Today's Lesson: 1. Positive Attitude: This is the NUMBER ONE RULE to being good at anything. Be positive ALL THE TIME! You do not suck, it just needs more time. 2. Use Recordings:  You can coach yourself out of it by listening back to recordings of yourself performing. Realize your mistakes and just fix them because mistakes can be fixed. 3. Seek Guidance: Find a teacher or a coach that can help you through those concept that are effecting you. We are available here at Drummers I Like for coaching calls and lessons. We are more than happy to help you. 4. Commit: You have to commit to the change that you are seeking. It will take time, effort, and work, but in the long run when you achieve your goals. You will realize it was worth it. That is it for today's lesson! Enjoy! Go Practice! Please take the time to leave a review as it helps rank our show and get it out to more listeners like you!  Daily Fill #121: The side hustle struggle | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:29

Welcome to the Now Wednesday edition of the Daily Fill with our Owner and founder Richard Ducat! Every Tuesday Richard gives us a dose of motivation, guidance, life hacks, marketing tips, and more! WHATS UP DRUMTREPRENEURS! We are back with another entry into the drumtrepreneur artist series as we chat side hustles with my close friend Darien Guy. Darien and I have been friends for the past 6 months and since getting to know him I have begun to get his true sense of entrepreneurship as he slowly let me into his world of side hustles and cymbal operations. Big Points from today's show: One step at a time: Darien gives us a quick breakdown into his childhood and the inspiration behind his entrepreneurial ways. We also get a deep sense of his drumming background and skillset as he breaks out his arsenal packed full of drum knowledge and experience. Career Overload: As we begin to dig into Darien's story we start pulling out a laundry list of career paths and accolades including being a high school teacher, touring with national recording artists, and managing a cymbal company The negotiator: As we get into Darien's current side hustle Smyrna Cymbals we start to get a true understanding of the in's and out's of acquiring, developing, and launching a cymbal company. Darien's ability to manage a multitude of companies, relationships, and passions with a clear track for success speaks to his true level of competence in business. I really want drummers to get a clear idea of the big picture which is that drumming is not going to pay the bills. It's going to take multiple jobs and a inventor type mindset that's not afraid to work 21 hour days. You have to prepare for the big things like failing, getting things wrong, pissing people off, and feeling like quitting. The idea is to not let those things stop you and be prepared to fail 100 times without giving a damn. That's a drumtrepreneur. We will be back next with the final installment of the artist series. I have big plans for this show going into 2018 with a handful of new series to explore and new journeys to take!  Daily Fill 120: Drum Lesson – How and Why To Record Your Practice | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:46

Hey Everyone! Welcome back to another Daily Fill Drum Lesson! In this week's episode of Drum Lessons with Scott Jackson, Scott explains why to record yourself and the steps you can take to make recording yourself part of your practice. Recording Yourself is the most efficient form of analysis out there. I preach on this because it gives your real time instant feedback! You can find some great devices for low cost that can set you up for success in every aspect of what you do. The process, your routine, how you sound, what you play, your challenges, and your successes. Here are 4 reason what you should take away from analyzing your recordings. Formulate HOW you sound example: the tone of the drums and cymbals. Formulate WHAT you play on the drums example: grooves, fills, chops, soloing, etc... You get feedback on CHALLENGES you are trying to overcome example: maybe making your paradiddles more articulate and cleaner. Feedback on your SUCCESSES example: your time and groove was solid during that drum cover you are working on. Key Points From Today's Lesson: 1. Where to Record Yourself: Record EVERYTHING you do! Personal Practice, Rehearsals, Concerts, Recording Studios, and Recording yourself within a recording studio. 2. How To Record Yourself: Scott talks about how to select a device that can help you get great audio quality for a low cost. Also, audio is a must have, but if you can get a video recorder with great audio then you are set for multiple avenues in your career. You can start posting on social media, YouTube, and start promoting yourself. 3. Why You Should Record Yourself: You start to find out HOW you sound. You start to recognize WHAT you like to hear yourself play. Example Fills, grooves, chops, etc... Feedback for overcoming Challenges. Feedback for finding SUCCESSES. Successes will help you fine tune your process of learning, organizing your time, and ultimately will help you streamline your routines. That is it for today's lesson! Enjoy! Go Practice!
