Episode-1498- If You Don’t Like the World, Wait a Minute, It Will Change | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:50:12

TweetAccept It! Then Adapt to It! The title of today’s show is of course a play on the statement, “if you don’t like the weather in _____, wait a minute and it will change”.  I always find it ironic when visiting a new place that many people that live there seem to think that saying is unique to where they live. The truth is that is pretty universal in any temperate climate and so is a shifting and changing world.  The world of today is far different than the world of the 1950s, we all accept that, but have you ever thought about how different the world of 2015 is from even the world of 1999? The key is the world is always changing and it always will.  We have a tendency to think we are individually unique and special, to some degree we are, yet there are constants that connect all of us in both space and time, within the human condition. The cave man, the pre industrial man and the 19th century farmer all seem very different from each other and from ourselves.  In the end though the most overriding factors in their lives and our own, are identical.  They are simply, Survive Create security Adapt as Necessary Question things and gain knowledge Be part of a family Belong to a community or to communities Innovate and profit (profit simply means to gain) To have a sense of Purpose To understand the Past (how did I/we get here) Looking to the future (where are I/we going) The concept of Modern Survivalism is based on material things like planning, emergency supplies, storing food, developing skills and many other things we physically do.  But it is even more about how to think, solve problems, understand your world, adapt to change and manage to thrive as families and communities, in spite of a shifting world.  Today we take a “big picture look” at those concepts. We will look at many of the coming shifts in our society, that indeed are unique to our time.  Yet we will view these shifts in the lens of modern survivalism and ask how our universal human nature can aid us in adjusting to them and even profiting from them. Join Us Today As We Discuss… What are some of the biggest trends in our current shifting society Government Growth and Intrusion Automation and Job Elimination Crypto Currencies The Virtual Nation Concept (new tribalism) Education eBooks and all digital means of information distribution What we can do to profit from and adapt to these shifts First and foremost accept “shift happens” Ask what you would do if God commanded you to be happy Take from that which is good and make it your own Establish beach heads of liberty – based on your personal passions Create your own opportunities Profit from “nostalgic blow back” Focus only on what you can influence Be a life long learner, never confusing education with “school” Question everything which causes your to react in any way Then require yourself to find logical answers to your own questions Choose your fights as in the “Art of War” – “To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy’s resistance without fighting.” Remember no one cares about you and yours as much as you and yours Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Pre Register for the Plant Propagation Course The Year 1498 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom GenForward.com TSP Gear PermaEthos.com AgriTrue.com Fortress Defense Consultants – (sponsor of the day) The Berkey Guy – (sponsor of the day) Bob Wells Plant of the Week – BLENHEIM APRICOT – The Blenheim Apricot is highly adaptable from zone 5 to zone 9. Last Monday’s Prepper Scenario You are in a large shopping mall. Some sort of panic breaks out and you have no idea why. All you know is that people are freaked out and screaming stuff like, “we have to get out of here”. The situation is getting worse by the second, being trampled to death is a real threat. The thing is you don’t know if the internal threat of staying put is real or imagined, you have no clue as to the danger. To make matters worse you are pretty far from any exit and a child is in your care, the child is about 80 pounds, small enough to be at greater risk of injury but large enough to make carrying him/her difficult. What steps should you take in advance and when entering any large public building to be best prepared to react to this scenario.  Episode-1495- Ben Falk on Soundscapes within Homestead Design | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:43:17

TweetHarvesting Ice at Whole Systems Design Ben Falk developed Whole Systems Design, LLC as a land-based response to biological and cultural extinction and the increasing separation between people and elemental things. Life as a designer, builder, ecologist, tree-tender, and backcountry traveler continually informs Ben’s integrative approach to developing landscapes and buildings. His home landscape and the Whole Systems Design studio site in Vermont’s Mad River Valley serve as a proving ground for the regenerative land developments featured in the projects of Whole Systems Design. Ben has studied architecture and landscape architecture at the graduate level and holds a master’s degree in land-use planning and design. Ben has conducted nearly 200 site development consultations across New England and facilitated dozens of courses on permaculture design, property selection, microclimate design, and design for climate change. Today Ben joins us to discuss soundscapes, an often over looked component of permaculture and homestead design.  Soundscapes have a huge impact on the quality of our lives and actually on the performance of a homestead and farm. Ben will discuss how in his design firm, IDs and maps soundscapes, and what considerations they take into account when designing to improve them. Also what’s worked well and what hasn’t here for them – what mistakes he’s personally made (like cutting down some pines far downhill that actually made the road noise reflected off a local cliff, considerably noisier) to working with water and co-location of buildings to enhance soundscapes We also delve into a lot about proximity and line of sight between sleeping spaces especially and the barn yard and entry to deal with predators and also heightened awareness of when someone is coming into the property.  Episode-1494- The Practical and Holistic Approach to Food Storage | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:48:48

TweetConfit – An Amazing Food that also Extends Storage Life. Today is a show about one of the fundamentals of modern survival philosophy, food storage.   Food storage is actually something that at one time was simply something everyone did.  Every home in America at one time seemed to have a root cellar full of canned goods. Today though food storage and the concept of survivalism or prepping is sensationalized and largely misunderstood.  Many tend to hear survivalist and at once envision a guy sitting on a ten year supply of military rations in a basement or bunker somewhere.  This image is hyped by media who simply wish to sell a story and worse is made up of journalists that live in a bubble of  “the government will fix our problems”.  The reality is that the bunker approach of military rations is both inaccurate and impractical. To worsen matters as preparedness has become more of a hot industry long term food has become a product marketed largely on fear vs. on the practical benefits it offers.  The reality is food storage doesn’t even require specially packaged 25 year stable products, though they can be useful in your food storage program.  The simple truth is that a simple 60-90 day supply of food in your home can help the average family deal with every day occurrences and most disasters they might ever expect to encounter. Join me today as we discuss… Why storing food is practical even if society never collapses Rule One – Eat what you store, store what you eat Keep a food journal Use “copy caning” Think with a “meal mentality” Store what “the kids” eat Store pet food as well Rule Two – Take advantage of opportunity buys Watch for sales Use coupons Pattern seasonal trends Understand Rule Three – Find local sources of food and partake of them Buy from local producers Learn about local seasonal opportunities Yes hunting and fishing (leveraged with rule five) Learn local wild edibles (there is always something) Rule Four – Use commercially prepared long term storables as extenders Find “meal ingredients” and store those Buy a can of this, a can of that, try stuff, stock what you like Learn about making “meals in a jar” Don’t go overboard on this stuff Rule Five – Become a producer of food and/or storables Gardens are great, perennials are even better Small livestock is a great option Consider aquaponics, hydroponics and things like microgreens Learn multiple storage techniques Flash freezing Dehydrating Jerky/Biltong Canning Smoking Confit Dry canning (I do it with jars and the vaccucanner) Producing storables from other foods is your silver bullet Become a great cook, stretch what others consider waste Where “rice and beans” fits in this mix Rule Six –  Seek a Holistic Solution None of these rules stand alone A formula is always more than the sum of its parts Take your time, ease into this as a “way of living” How storing food empowers you to live a better life Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1494 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom GenForward.com TSP Gear PermaEthos.com AgriTrue.com Harvest Eating – (sponsor of the day) Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) Free Rocket Mass heater Plans from Paul Wheaton (for only 24 hours) My Video on Biltong My Review of the Vaccucanner Podcast about Meals In A Jar with Jennifer Ess Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1493- Adventures in Raising Ducks | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:38:23

TweetA Duck’s Pack Like Behavior Makes Management Easy Our duck activities have garnered a lot of requests for a full show on just ducks.  So today I will do my best.  I have been reluctant to do so for a few reasons.  The first is ducks are a new thing to me. I  grew up caring at least at times for chickens and geese.  I know their requirements well. While I observed lots of semi wild muscovies in Florida, I was not responsible for their care other than feeding them surplus fishing bait.  As of right now my direct experience in duck husbandry is about 8 months long.  This spring we purchased our little ducks, we lost some but now we have 25 happy adults.  I have had good results but credit the ducks more than myself with that. Leading me to the second reason, there just isn’t much to it unless you go out of your way to create work for yourself.  Rain and cold can kill a chicken, it makes a duck happy.  Ducks travel in groups, if you get one headed the right direction, pretty much everyone follows.  They forage, they eat, they poop, they quack and they lay eggs.  Unless you are breeding show quality birds or something there isn’t a lot to it.  At least that is how it feels at times. Join Me Today to Discuss… Why the duck is much easier to care for than a chicken Loves cold Loves rain Easy to fence Light on land Herding is possible Hunts as a pack Cool manure Creature of habit and routine The not so great side of ducks Messy Single minded stubborness Noisy Creature of habit and routine Duck breeds I am working with Cayugas Hybrid Layers Rouens Runners (various) Khaki Campbell Swedish (may be?) Muscovy Best All Around Breeds (my opinion based on research) Meat – Pekins or Grimaud Hybrid Pekin – Jumbo Pekin Eggs – Hybrid 300 Layers (gold or white) Self Propagating Dual Purpose – Muscovy Dual Purpose – Buff (aka Buff Orpington) Duck eggs and why they rock Ducks are born with 1500 ovum vs. the 1000 of a chicken Ducks are good layers for 3-4 seasons 6x the Vitamin D, 2x the Vitamin A, of chickens 2x the cholesterol in duck eggs vs chicken eggs (good cholesterol) Higher fat and energy content (good fat) Thick, viscus yolks (beautiful over easy/medium) Better for baking if that is your thing Less likely to break yolks, or accidentally crack one The basics of raising and managing ducks “Experts say space the same as chickens 4 sf per duck in “coop” 10 sf per duck in “yard” Ducks don’t “perch” except for muscovies (sometimes) Fencing can be 3 feet high except for muscovies (sometimes) I don’t use laying boxes because the ducks don’t seem to care Generally most eggs are laid by 730ish am Provide water, they shit it up FAST A ducks personality tends to be the sum of its flock personality Hatching young ducks If you can get a mom to do it, let her do it Incubation is the same as chickens, it just takes longer Store eggs for up to 10 days, then start all of them together Day 1-25 99.5 turn 7 times a day, Day 26-28 98.5 no turning Day 1-33 99.5 turn 7 times a day, Day 33-35 98.5 no turning (muscovy) Brooding young ducks Expect to brood for 3-5 weeks depending on season Provide heat on one end of brooder Spend a lot of time with them if you want them “tame” Feed them chick starter They can go into a “tractor” in good weather as early as 2 weeks Do not introduce them to the main flock until they are at least 60% grown Develop a drain system for water No “bathing water” until 2 weeks They MUST be able to dunk their heads in water Some will die, accept it Final thoughts If you incubate get a good incubator Beware of “Tractor Supply Disease” eFowl and Metzer are great places to order Just do it, it isn’t hard Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Pre Register for the Plant Propagation Course The Year 1493 Join Our Forum Walking To F[...]

 Episode-1491- The Christmas Special for 2014 – Corrected | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:25:49

TweetNote – Somehow the first time this show was published the audio didn’t attach to it, I have now republished it as a new post with audio attached.  I apologize for the mix up. Most of today’s show is a recreation of 2008’s Christmas special. Today we pause and take a moment to reflect on Christmas and how it has become the Holiday we celebrate today. Many American’s have no idea just how Christmas became unique here in America, the role it played in bringing our nation together after two wars of independence and the civil war. Christmas is special and a time to pause and reflect. Christmas is indeed a special time of year, today I will cover many aspects of it that may make this Christmas just a bit more special. There is also a full text transcription on of the non commercial portion of today’s show in the show notes below. Tune in today to hear about… Christmas was banned in England at one time and even parts of America Early Americans didn’t really celebrate Christmas, (congress was in session on Dec 25th, 1789) In the early 1800s Christmas was a rowdy holiday spurred by class conflict, turmoil and unemployment In 1819, best-selling author Washington Irving wrote The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon bringing us many “ancient customs”, he simply invented Leading up to the Civil War, Christmas was a “southern holiday” and Thanksgiving a “northern holiday” How Christmas and Thanksgiving together helped to heal a young America Today is a time to pause, reflect and just be, prepping, planning and stress will all wait patiently for you Different ending music for today’s show! The most beautiful version of Oh Holly Night I have ever heard, just pause, listen and realize what really matters while it plays. TweetIf you feel like this, may be it is time to do your own thing. In episode 1487 I asked you guys what you wanted to hear about in the last regular episode of the year, the topic of low cost to start up businesses seemed most popular so, so be it. I am a little leery of doing this show, because the what of a business is actually less important than the why, how, execution and passion of a business.  So I am going to ask you guys to do me a favor and use these ideas more as a think tank stye of things rather than, “Jack says these are good ideas”.  Episode-1487- Ian McCollum on Military Surplus Rifles and More | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:22:04

TweetCheck out InRange.TV Ian McCollum is a firearms writer and researcher specializing in arms from the 1880s to the 1950s or so.  He is interested in the mechanical details of different firearms designs as well as their use in practical field situations.  Ian has run a web site on these guns called Forgotten Weapons for about 4 years, and his work has appeared in publications including Gun Digest and the Canadian Press. Ian has just recently released the first episode of his new project, InRange TV – an online TV-style show focusing on interesting factual and detailed content, without the drama and BS that is endemic to gun programs on cable TV. He joins us today to discuss how older guns can be just as good as the modern AR-15 while costing less and looking better.  We start out with what Ian feels is the current best deal in old military arms for long range shooting.  We then discuss how shooting skills translate from one type of gun to another. We continue with some of the best ways to improve your shooting skills and have a discussion as to is the AR15 really even a “modern firearm” at all and have we gotten out of hand with accessories, add ons, etc.  We finish up with why Ian feels that all gun-related shows on cable TV so horrendously dumb and why Internet Television may be the answer to better gun related video content.  Episode-1486- 20 Simple Prepper Steps Every American Should Take that Most Don’t | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:23:41

TweetThis is NOT the place to be when you start your journey as a modern survivalist. Yesterday I did a “back to fundamentals” show on permaculture, today I am going to do one on basic preparedness.  On some levels it is great that prepping has become its own “industry”.  This brings some unique products to the market and allows preppers to buy from companies that think like they do.  On the other hand, it has also attracted parasites to our world. Said parasites hype every news story to infer the end of the world, dollar, oil, _____, will be here in just a few short months.  They cite “CIA insiders” that are likely some dweeb that grew up reading spy novels to make their case and other nonsense.  Then networks like Discovery get on board and do nonsense TV shows like Doomsday Preppers, and other BS. The problem is the person simply concerned by events like hurricanes, fires, earthquakes, realistic pandemic threats, loss of liberty, sustained inflation begins to feel prepping is for quacks.  Or they feel that prepping is so expensive that it is just not possible anyway. The truth is prepping doesn’t require a mountain retreat, it doesn’t require a bunker and it certainly doesn’t require 20 pallets of MREs down in your basement.  What it actually requires us to do is simply think more like our grandparents and great grand parents and less like modern slaves who worship authority, conformity and debt. Join Me Today As We Discuss these Twenty Rules… Step one – keep a food log Step two – keep a spending log Step three – perform a risk assessment on your life and geography Step four – build a basic black out kit Step five – build a basic first aid kit Step six – start copy canning Step seven – cut two expenses, just two of your choosing Step eight – Build a basic 72 Hour Kit – BOB Step nine – buy some source of back up power – any source Step ten – get some source of back up heating Step eleven – build just two 7.5 gallon tubs or four 5 gallon buckets emergency food Step twelve – store a minimum of 100 gallons of water, more if you can Step thirteen – acquire a minimum or two emergency radios Step fourteen – acquire some means of back up communications Step fifteen – build a basic documentation pack Step sixteen – build up over time a 30 day supply of commercial long term storage food Step seventeen – learn at least 2 methods of food storage Step eighteen – find local food producers and visit often, learn about seasonal opportunities Step nineteen – learn to cook 10 new recipes (try to use some of your storables) Step twenty – store up a reasonable amount of COH (cash on hand) Step twenty-one (bonus) – affirm your right and responsibility to survive Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1486 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom GenForward.com TSP Gear PermaEthos.com AgriTrue.com Fortress Defense Consultants – (sponsor of the day) Ready Made Resources – (sponsor of the day) Bug Out Documentation Episode All Steven Harris Interviews on Back Up Power Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-1485- What is this Permaculture Stuff and Why Should I Even Care | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:48:04

TweetThe Effect of Pulsing Poultry over One Year From time to time I back up and do a sort of “back to basics” show on certain subjects.  Often things like Modern Survival Philosophy or basic preparedness.  But yesterday I realized the word “permaculture” is tossed around at TSP constantly but likely many listeners don’t really understand it at all or perhaps even know what it is. Additionally many people wonder why they should even care.  Isn’t permaculture just hippies rolling in mud?  No, it is more like Greening Deserts, Greening More Deserts and perhaps even using cows to restore entire eco systems and feed half the world.  It also might be completely redesigning the largest farm in Jordan, building a cold climate sustainable profitable orchard or perhaps making a back yard feed a family. So today we take a look at Permaculture from a basics of understanding and functionality standpoint.  I think that both people totally new to permaculture and those who are full time practitioners will enjoy this look into the design science of permaculture. Tune in today as we discuss… What is permaculture – beyond the typical definition What permaculture is not and misconceptions about it and the people behind it What is the prime directive and the three ethics Understanding techniques are techniques they are not permaculture Swales Hugulkulture Food Forests – A good teachable example The High Canopy The Low Tree Shrub herbaceous rhizome cover crops vertical climbers What are zones and sectors Permaculture on a small scale Intensive gardens Urban food forests Reuse and recycling Back yard engineering Permaculture on a broad acre scale Can not be run like “conventional systems” Not always called “permaculture” Absolutely requires the integration of Animals Requires a time phased approach Largely misunderstood both by main stream and “purple breathers” The simple truth The unaltered ethics and directive are universal This is a system of design, not just a way to grow food If permaculture “doesn’t work” natural systems don’t work Truthfully modern agriculture doesn’t work if fairly judged Final Thoughts Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1485 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom GenForward.com TSP Gear PermaEthos.com AgriTrue.com Bulk Ammo – (sponsor of the day) Safecastle Royal – (sponsor of the day)  Bob Wells Plant of the Week – Methley Plum Tree The Methley Plum is highly adaptable from zone 5 to zone 9.  It is a juicy sweet plum with red flesh, reddish purple skin and great flavor. It is an attractive tree that is vigorous and bears heavy. It ripens early and is very cold hardy. This is Bob Wells personal favorite when it comes to plums. Steve Solomon Interview on TSP This Monday’s Prepper Scenario Your home has been destroyed by fire.  Luckily no one was killed or even severely injured.  Most anything of value in your home is ruined and/or gone.  You are left with the clothes on your back, what you keep in your vehicles and any items that are in a DETACHED structure only.  Describe now how you begin to put the pieces back together, how you deal with insurance, etc.  If you keep documents, money, etc in a firebox or firesafe you can assume those survived. Last Monday’s Prepper Scenario This one is strait from my interview with Masaad Ayoob if you remember it. Whether you do or do not put yourself into this scenario. A man attempts to break into you home and manages to do so. You hear the commotion and pick up your gun. You find the man in your home, you order him the ground but he comes at you, you shoot him, he is down dying in a pool of blood. For what ever reason you are alone in your home, no other witnesses. You now must dial 911, how do you handle everything from this point forward. Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
