You might think that the most difficult questions I get come from older folks who have been around a while, you would be wrong.  The most difficult questions to answer come from young people, asking “what do I do with my life”, in some sort of way. The current generation (Millennials) and the one coming next (Generation Z) take a lot of flack.  We hear they are lazy, don’t know the value of hard work and never knew a day without a computer.  Really, well, hey Boomers and Gen X on that last one, few of us knew a day without a TV right?  Sometimes we should think before pointing to the “flaws” of others.  I digress though. The reality is this generation has been born at what should be one of the most exciting times in history.  There is more opportunity today than ever before.  Businesses are easier to start, educations are easier to obtain and new ways of doing things happen every day.  The truth is right now is one of the greatest expansions of entrepreneurship ever seen  on the planet. Yet many of our young people feel lost.  TSP is about survival and living a better life.  If we don’t preserve families and if we don’t look out for our next generations, who will look out for us when we are old men and women.  What of any value can we leave behind if we don’t leave behind young men and women who value both their past and their futures? He tells you there is a chemical spill just up the road and mandatory evacuation has been ordered. It is about 8pm, your spouse is in the shower, your kids are in PJs in front of the TV. The threat is real and you understand and will comply with the order to evacuate. The officer doesn’t know how long it will last, he says likely at least a week and you need to move NOW, ten minutes to get out tops, what do you do? TweetWhat Would a Virtual Nation be Like In Episode 1421 I discussed both the Estonian E-Citizen Program and Ecuador’s new Digital Currency and asked a simple question, could digital currencies and the concept of E-Citizenry be used to create a virtual nation. I think this is a valuable thought experiment and I have some ideas I want to share today.  The goal is to get a discussion going about what can be done, vs. what can’t be done.  What might work vs. why nothing can work. As part of this I created a forum thread to discuss a Virtual Nation’s Constitution would be like.  There has been some interesting discussion and in particular some clear examples of limited thinking demonstrated in it.  Part of this is my fault, for calling it a constitution.  That framed it in the world of Statism vs. Nationalism.  A better term would have been a Technical Specification. TweetYou Don’t Need a Remote Mountain Retreat to Have a Homestead. Please Note – there was a major math error in today’s show which will create a future “Jack Was Wrong Segment”.  I don’t know why but in this show I said 208 x 4 was 2,496.  This is clearly wrong the correct number was 832. This should of made the tree counts 80 at 10 feet and 40 at 20 feet spacings.  This is what happens when you do math in your head on the fly I guess, given 208x4x3 is 2,496 I guess I was thinking in yards and talking in feet.  In a round about way I guess I put my foot in my mouth! There is no hard rule as to how much land is “enough” and in fact the question itself is generally flawed. The person asking such a question is generally asking it as such, “How much land is enough to provide 100 percent of my needs”? The reason said question is flawed is simply that you are NOT going to provide 100% of your needs, on your own, from any piece of land. There are a number of reasons that this is the case. The biggest reason though is simply man hours. A piece of land can only yield so much production and each square foot of land under cultivation requires human interaction. Even a wild berry bush must be picked if one is to eat berries. Sure hens lay eggs and a small flock is a great addition to your homestead if you can do it, but they must be fed, watered, housed, culled, etc. Today I want to take a different look at this question, by applying 10 more questions to it, they are, How much land do you have to work with? What climate type are you in and hence what can you easily grow? How much time do you have to work on the property weekly? Of the things that grow where you live, which do you most like to eat? What type of budget and time line do you have for improving your land? How long do you plan to own the property? Do you just want personal production or some sort of income? What laws and restrictions must be considered in your area? Will you actively live on the land in question? How will you store and deal with the surplus beyond immediate use? From there we will take a look at how I might design a simple square 1 acre property. Yes I know it is supposed to be a Monday feedback show but sometimes I am called or inspired to talk on a subject.  After Friday’s rant about legalized cheating in the class room, I feel it is necessary to do two things to be “fair to educators”, as quite a few people have asked for that. The first part won’t make those calling for fairness happy but it is about being fair, fair to the children in these systems of programming.  In part one of the show I will further define the problem until it is so in your face you will only defend public education as it is, because you are vested in the system itself so deeply that the truth doesn’t matter. I was also challenged with what is the solution, so part two, which will likely also not make anyone who wants me to be fair happy will focus on solutions.  I find it funny that most who call for fairness don’t actually want fairness.  In my view the current system is not in need of repair but obsolesce! Industry has been obsoleting products for hundreds of years.  Many of the products and services we personally used as children and found critical to our daily lives are long gone.  So why do we hang on to a model of education created in Prussia in the 1880s in 2014? Can we not do better than that?  And bluntly should we turn to public officials, politicians and bureaucrats who live off this flawed system for a solution?  Can we really expect that those who were created by the system, developed the system and profit from the system to fix it?  Are we not simply fools, getting what we deserve if we actually expect that?
