TweetOne of you guys asked about me doing some new podcasts on bow hunting for deer.  Today I will do a show on my “kit” for bow hunting and why I carry what I carry.  This will not include the basic items I carry for any trip to the woods, you know basic survival stuff like water, food, etc. I am going to stick just to my kit for archery hunting, I will say a bit on the bow too, but most of that will be on a later show.  I will also talk about the type of knife I like for deer hunting, even though you always carry a knife.  Due to how flipping busy I am this week, todays show will be a little shorter than typical. TweetToday we will look at the Ebola situation and discuss prepping for epidemic/pandemic in general.  I have received so many emails expressing concern and fear about Ebola, I must do this show. The reason I have hesitated isn’t because we can’t learn from this situation.  It also isn’t because it poses no threat to the US at all.  Nor is it because Ebola isn’t a terrible disease.  No it is simply that there is so much hype, fear and bullshit going on about Ebola that I don’t want to add to it in anyway!  So perhaps I can mitigate it today. Ebola is a serious life threatening illness.  It has the potential to do a lot of long term harm, even in the US but not by infecting millions as the hype would lead one to believe.  The reality is the biggest threat Ebola represents to developed nations is economic. Join Me Today To Discuss How long have we known about the virus called Ebola How is Ebola spread Are we “sending troops to fight Ebola”, yes but this phrase is misleading Some statistics as of 10-3-14 Guinea, Liberia & Sierra Leone – 7470 cases Guinea, Liberia & Sierra Leone – 3431 deaths Guinea, Liberia & Sierra Leone – Combined population 22 million Current percent of infection in these three nations .03% Current percent of death in these three nations .0156% Motor vehicle fatalities in the US in 2012 33,000 were .01% of the total population Total deaths from all accidents in the US in 2009 was .04% Malignant Tumors killed .18% of the total population in 2009 Why the greatest threat to the US is economic Media hype Over reaction Legitimate concerns Why the threat is minimal Quarantine is very effective for Ebola It must be spread by bodily fluids The disease is not contagious until symptomatic Ebola patients go from well to a little sick to extremely sick, very fast If you have been exposed it is likely that you will know it What to do about this threat The same common sense preps as always Minimum 30 days of food and essentials, 60 days is better Be prepared to work remotely if possible Good storage of essentials for animals as well Be medically prepped, not so much for the disease as for any illness/injury Relax, don’t worry, have a homebrew, seriously. Last Monday’s Prepper Scenario An ice storm hits your area. There is no electricity and won’t be for weeks. Movement is all but impossible, even with chains most roads are blocked by multiple downed trees. Forecast is for bitterly cold weather for the next week or so, highs below freezing. Power companies say power will be out for up to three weeks for some customers, in this case that includes you. It will be at least a week before you can get out and about. TweetYour Body Can’t Be Free If Your Mind is Imprisoned Did I really just quote En Vogue?  You bet because in the words of Donald Shimoda when quoting Snoopy the dog in Richard Bach’s book Illusions, “I shall quote the truth wherever I find it”. Here is another truth my love of liberty is so strong that my life is literally dedicated to it.  At one time I saw the solution to lie in politics.  If we could only get the right people into power.  Then one day I began to realize the sad truth is two fold. First, generally the right people to have in power, do not wish for power.  They have no desire to control others, that is both what makes them the right people as well as those who don’t want the job. Second that the few who are right for the job that are willing to do it, can’t compete with the system of predators, thieves, liars and tyrants when they become part of it.  To really understand this just in the US House alone, just visit Defining the Machine, and after that you will have zero doubt that the game is rigged. So once you realize the political fix is in, further that the banking and industrial giants control that anyway.  You then come to understand that all of main stream media is controlled by only 6 companies.  That everything you are told, shown, expected to believe or argument you are given only two sides of is programmed by a handful of individuals. This leads many in the “conspiracy community” to postulate that the goal is total physical slavery.  Yet when you focus on freedom you see the horrible truth for what it is, there is no need to physically enslave a man, if you already control his mind. This show is sort of a beginners show and also at the same time a whack the “experienced prepper” with the 2×4 of reality show.  Recently we started doing the “Monday Prepper Scenario” and the entire point of it is a trickling in of the subject we will cover in depth today. The truth is many people who fancy themselves preppers are not actually preparing for the most likely disasters and emergencies they will face.   Additionally many people won’t prep at all because they consider “prepping” the realm of the mentally defunct on shows like “Doomsday Preppers”. In both cases a focus on the extreme leads to a failure to plan for the likely. Let’s look at it this way, here are some things that have happened to large numbers real people in the US since TSP started, just 6.5 years ago. There is no electricity and won’t be for weeks.  Movement is all but impossible, even with chains most roads are blocked by multiple downed trees.  Forecast is for bitterly cold weather for the next week or so, highs below freezing.  Power companies say power will be out for up to three weeks for some customers, in this case that includes you.  It will be at least a week before you can get out and about.  At that time supplies, gas, etc. will be short and many stores closed anyway for another week due to no power, damage, folks not being able to come to work, etc.  What do you do, including sanitation, animal needs (if applicable), heat, motivation and morale, etc.   Last Monday’s Prepper Scenario A serious illness of some form has gone into true epidemic mode. The government and the CDC have imposed a quarantine. There is to be no travel or movement in your area for 30 days. If you are away from home you are permitted to travel home but once there you must stay put. If you are home now you must stay, no last minute trips to “the store” which is likely a shambles anyway. You can’t go to work, you and your family just have to stick it out for 30 days, may be more. What would you do, including how to keep sanitation in check and how to keep morale up. TweetIt has been a long time since I have really dug deep into this topic.  Our mission at TSP is to help people become more self sufficient.  The reality is the biggest systemic dependency most people must deal with is economic dependence. Economic dependence also leads to a required acceptance of many things you don’t want in your life.  Trading time for dollars is what the labor force is based on.  Yet the entire concept of “labor” is actually disdained by most business owners, even those that treat people very good.  In the end a labor force is an massive expense and a massive source of frustration. Every business, no matter how well they treat employees is always looking to improve efficiency, at least if it is to survive it is.  Every time I improve efficiency I reduce my need for labor relative to my production.  This means quite literally that business is and has been seeking to design out labor to the highest degree possible for a very long time. So all while we are told about “job creation” the entire system is based on systemic job elimination.  To be brutally honest, if I am employing 500 people and improved efficiency will let me get rid of 50 I will do so.  Why?  Beyond the capital return, it will let me purge the 10% of the lowest performers from my company.  In the end the 450 will actually be a lot happier. There is nothing wrong with a job and being an employee, just understand the above is the reality of your existence.  You are employed only because you are either necessary or perceived necessary.  That alone should make most people at least consider either building a business or learning to at least market themselves more effectively.
