House is a Journey show

House is a Journey

Summary: This podcast is all about creating current House Tunes set. It will be Deep, it will be Sexy it will be Funky, it might even be Trancey but it will NEVER be Electro. I am not a pro and I do this just for fun.

2014 May En Mai fais ce qu'il te plaît! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4668

En Mai fais ce qu'il te plaît! (2014 Edition)  French Proverb which literally means " In May do what pleases you"..    Every year, on my birthday, I put something together .. for myself.. It does not infer that this set is in anyway better or that the tunes are "special" just that I know I will want to enjoy it later on day most probably in hotel room or on the plane or god forbid maybe walking or running somewhere.. Set may not be as polished as other uploads or may contain tracks I have used before. I may just have wanted to hear different cuts or indulge in some gratuitous Xtian’s trademarks vocal edits, who knows? It is first and foremost for ME !! I won’t wax lyrical on it, I have dozen of similar sets that will never see the light of day. Sometimes because they are simply not good enough or because I got bored along the line (“God is a DJ” springs to mind). This one, because I played with it around my birthday, gets to be published. A deep, indie, progressive offer, very much the sound I feel comfortable with currently. One last word on my birthday.. Best present ever was to see my kids, niece and nephew dance crazy to the Fade/Your’ve Got the Love edits of my last live set.. For 3 to 11 years old to have a dance to tunes like that just proves that if you do not give them crap, they enjoy good music all the same..   Playlist:     2013 Come On Now Set It Off (Original Mix). Tube & Berger feat. Juliet Sikora 2014 For Now (Original Mix) [Xtian Lil' Edit]. Time Takers 2014 Red Light (Giom Remix). Giom 2014 Much Better (Original Mix). Saccao, Rafael Cerato 2013 Everybody Loves (Monte Remix). Phil & Dan 2014 Canto Del Pilon(Nora En Pure Remix). Milk & Sugar feat. Maria Marquez 2013 It Really Hurts (Original Edit). The Peacemaker Project 2013 Somebody’s Face (Jelly for the Babies Remix) [Xtian House Music Edit feat Papa Joe Aviance]. Paul Martinez, Fiddler 2012 Rule The World (Haroun Hickman Remix). Rashid Ajami 2013 Mirage (Tvardovsky Remix) [Xtian The One Botched Mash feat FK and the Shapeshifters].Vanilla Ace 2013 Someday (Original Mix). Gabriel Rocca, Raul Caulddeira 2013 BIG Fun (Full Intention Remix). Inner City 2013 Hold You (Depaack  Flower of Life Remix). KANT 2014 I'll Take You (Richard Earnshaw Re-Beat Edit). Jon Cutler     Highlights:  I won’t go overboard with this section. One common thread is the immaculate production of ALL the tracks. If you do not have a good sound system, this set requires good headphones..  Love the first track “Come On Now Set if Off”.. It has swag very much what Tube & Berger are all about. The Giom jam “Red Light” is probably the best track of the lot. I love “Canto del Pilon” and can’t wait to see the reaction of my kids to this one.. I very rarely touch Latin rhythms. I hope they will get it. “It Really Hurts” needs a mention for the subtlety of the production and the very distinct Dido feel to it. Pre-emptive apologies for the “Mirage” mash-up. I am sure someone with talent could do better but it is my birthday after all.. “Big Fun”, Kevin Saunderson, Inner City .. House royalty.. and if any Dl is reading this.. it begs to be mixed n with Touch me in the morning.. I did not do because it would have taken the set to another direction but it will work, trust me..   That’s it.   Not quite sure what will come next. Sexy house or a progression towards Trance.   Enjoy   A bientôt   Xtian

 2014 May L'After was a Far Messier Affair | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4768

Picking up from where we left off.. After a very tame and somewhat bland FK set, I dropped a selection of funky house classics to get a few feet moving. The carefull scripted algorhytm was thrown out the window, I started soulful and strangely ended up in Tranceland.. the odd thing is.. It worked !!! Someone I have a lot of respect for, Richard Vasquez (here on podomatic http://richardvasquez.podomatic.com) commented on the previous FK set and depicted it as cerebral.. A fitting description of what I can do.. What you are about to listen to is anything but.. It is .. primal! Although I had everything all set up, I had to deviate from the script and it ended messy... This is an extract of the peaktime moments, the last 80 minutes.  Proceedings got a tad messier as the night went on with the energy levels picking up. Far from being perfect and with some terrible quality files, what you are about to hear hopefully translates the vibe I was getting from the decks.. As my friends well know, I am definitively not a 'live" person but the feedback I was getting from them for an hour made this possible... It is repetitive (I looped and relooped, mashed and remashed) "cheap" but somehow in the heat of the moment I even got in the Frankie tune I had left out from the tribute set. I am not even sure my friends picked up on it, all I know is that they did have "their hands up in the air".. To sum it up " We had FUN"..   Playlist: ... is at best approximate. I am not quite sure what I dropped and when but the credits are correct. 1999 Big Love (Peter Heller’s Big Love) [Xtian Edit]. Peter Heller 2001 Guitara G (G Club Original Mix) [Xtian 4zeLove Edit]. Banda Sonora 2002 Diamond Life (Dance Ritual Mix). Louie Vega & Jay “Sinister” Sealee feat Julie McKnight 2005 Fade (Grant Nelson Big Room Vocal Mix). Solu Music feat. Kimblee 2013 Fade (Shane D’s Ode to GN Remix). Solu Music feat Kimblee, Grant Nelson, Shane D 2012 Fade in Your Love For the DJ (Shane D Private Edit). Solu Music, Frankie Knuckles, Candi Staton 2013 Your Love for the DJ (Grant Nelson’s Private Edit). Candi Staton, Frankie Knuckles, Grant Nelson 2012 Never Let the Sun Fade (Grant Nelson’s Private Edit).  Solu Music, Myomi, Grant Nelson 2005 Fade (Grant Nelson Big Room Vocal Mix) [Xtian Bridge Edit]. Solu Music feat. Kimblee 2011 You’ve Got the Love (Mark Knight Remix). Florence + The Machine 2012 You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) (DJ Meme's Mix Of Epic Proportions). Frankie Knuckles pres. B. Slade 2010 Missing the Silence (Xtian Bacardi Edit). vs. Delirium Sarah McLachlan 2011 Finally (East & Young Remix). KOT feat Julie McKnight 2011 Finally (Rafa Carneiro Epic Bootleg). KOT feat Julie McKnight   Highlights: Apart from the very low audio quality, Shane D and Grant Nelson work on "Fade" and I am a bit partial to Xtian's "Missing the Silence" mash-up .. And the realization that "Strings of Life" is actually an anthem.. Had totally forgotten that one.. I will be back soon but I have no idea which direction I will fall onto. P.S: I guess I have to mention the "Salsa Incident"... My only comment... As white men can't dance nor dunk, gay men can't throw..     Xtian   P.P.S.: to all our friends who were with us last Saturday.. Thank You!

2014 May Rest Easy Mr. Knuckles | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 5807

Rest Easy Mr Knuckles, You brought us so much Joy...   I was overseas when I heard the news of Frankie Knuckles passing. Once the initial moment of sadness passed on, I immediately thought that the best way to celebrate his legacy was to plan an old style “House” party with all our close friends, whom Frankie K had entertained and with some of whom he had spend some friendly nights here and in Greece.   Reading the hundreds of comments in the blogosphere only reinforced the feeling that Frankie Knuckles was such a gentleman, such a provider of Joy that only a party would be a fitting tribute.   Since then literally thousands of FK’s tribute sets have been dropped. Some by immense DJs like David Morales, Dimitri and the likes. Obviously I was not going to compete neither with the talent nor the intentions of those guys.   Here is the live set I played on Saturday the 3rd of May. Direct from the mixer. It did not quite work as I had planned. The set may have come a little bit too early in the night when everyone was readier to schmooze, mingle and drink than dance.. which really did not matter as it was all about celebrations.   My selection was based solely on “happy tunes”, trying to showcase as much of a current Frankie as I could and not repeat the amazing but very obvious tribute sets, which one can find all over the net.   I went to the trouble of buying from Japan the “ A New Reality” CD, which I had lost in one of our many previous moves just to get the introductory sample with Frankie’s voice and be able to drop the two last tracks, which may be my favourite Knuckles.   Thereafter, we went into a less soulful and more Funky/Trance mood, with a set, which ending extract I will upload later on this week, got a few people going…   Playlist: 2004 Intro Frankie Knuckles from a New Reality " What's Going On Frankie?". 1995 Rock With You. (Frankie Knuckles Remix). Michael Jackson 2013 Let's Stay Home (A Director's Cut Classic Club Mix).  2014 April Introspection 3.0 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4788

Introspection 3.0 (Happy Easter ! ! ) Dim the light, grab a book and prepare to chill. Also suitable for work, children, pets, lovers etc…   Third and last iteration of the Introspection series. Not only because it may be time to stop looking at my navel and change vibe but also because I think this set wraps it up nicely.   Deep, Progressive, Indie House with a distinct lounge and ambient feel. I should have called it “Xtian goes Chill” for it is very rare for me to stay between 120/122 bpm.   Except for some dubious mixing towards the end, I am overall satisfied to have kept one single vibe, atmosphere and direction from the first to the last track.   I was chatting on FB with a friend of mine, who very eloquently described our sounds as “pop with a deep house feel and beat”.. Well, Tim, let’s hope it sticks.   Not quite sure where I will go next. I am still longing for a blast in the past to vocal Trance but need to make sure I have enough decent current tracks before I invest time into it. In the recent past every time I tried, I wasted hours only to leave the set unfinished.   If not, we will tend to a Frankie Knuckles and Soulful House Live set, which I am preparing for a party in May. If any good, I will definitively post it.   We shall see!     Playlist:     2012 Unobtainable Intro (German Mix).  World of Intros 2013 Savanna (Jelly for the Babies Remix) [Xtian Taki Edit]. Jericho Ismael 2014 Your Softness (Original Mix). Third Chapter 2013 Open My (Ben Remember Remix). Jam Xpress feat. Charlie (AUS) 2014 Lovebreak (Indeed Remix). Tube & Berger feat. Milan Euringer 2014 Be Mine (Original Mix Edit). Lane 8 2014 UR My Sunshine (Original Mix). Betoko 2013 The Place I Know (Original Mix). Andrea Fissore 2014 You Said (Original Mix). Nightriders 2013 In my Stride (Original Mix). Soul Button feat Stee Downes 2013 Silk Frames (Original Mix). Sons of Maria 2014 Turn Around (Original mix). LeisureGroove 2013 The Time Has Come (Original Mix). DAVI 2013 Lead Me Home (Original Mix). Dan Caster 2014 Rock The Night. U-Ness &  JedSet     Highlights:   “Savanna” from Jericho Ismael Jelly for the babies on remix duties. Another European act from Zagreb (Croatia). Track gave the perfect setting for the chill ambient atmosphere I wanted to create.   A bit of dubious mixing later, “Your Softness” from Third Chapter. Big bass, clever synth and a male voice I like..   “Open my Eyes” from Jam Xpress feat Charlie (AUS). Local talent from Melbourne (Andy Murphy is in the back of all that).. Great track, exactly what my current vibe is.. Production is impeccable!   “Lovebreak” from Tube & Berger, track I had been told about by lars, which I actually had already on my HD.. Try Indie, Progressive, Deep with a dash of funk.. Not bad and all in one.. Former Beatport number 1 with a charity album..   “Be Mine” from Lane 8, haunting track I may have used recently ( did not feel like checking), felt right to drop, listen to the build up, the production.. Big BIG bass line again.. from America part of the Anjuna Deep crew..   Betoko “UR my Sunshine”…  Betoko would be in my current top five creators.. Beto Cohen is originally Mexican, living in the UK. I would hate to put a genre on his talent.. It is just great, amazing music.. The Chicane of this decade..   “The Place I Know” from Andréa Fissore. Possibly my favourite track of the set.. I had my children dancing to this very Balearic modern track. Listen to that guitar and try telling me you are not on the Mediterranean. Andrea is Italian living in Vienna.. Latin flair and Viennese sense of perfection.. Can’t be much better.   “You Said” from the Nightri(continued)

 2014 April Introspection 2.0 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4716

Introspection 2.0   Same spirit as the first iteration. Deep, slightly down tempoIndie and dark progressive House driven by big bass lines and (I hope ) original eclectic melodies.   Except for the Lana track which I picked up from Introspection 1.0, the set has a clear continental European feel. The artists and remixers are mostly from Northern Europe. The production is distinctively Nordic or German. I used no Latin flair nor samples and tried to concentrate on the mixing only.   Official thanks to Lars, who sent me some German tunes. Not only do I love them but it has opened a new direction for seeking new sounds. Lars, I am very grateful.   A word on the passing of Frankie Knuckles:  In the near future I will (how could I not?) fittingly mark the occasion with hopefully a live set at home with friends. Should the result be good enough I will upload the set. Reading the posts from the average punter like me and from DJs  he influenced or supported during his career, the common thread was on how much joy and what a nice gentle man he was. Whatever I’ll do, shall reflect the joy and gentleness. I do not want it to be a sad tribute, hence the wait..   Playlist:   2013 Summertime Sadness (MK Feel It In The Air Remix vs MK Lee Foss Cold Blooded Remix) [Xtian Shorten’ Edit]. Lana Del Rey 2013 Be Good (Original Mix). Andrey Exx  feat. Fomichev 2013 Be Good to Me (Me  My Toothbrush Remix). Croatia Squad 2014 Feel Good (Moe Turk Remix). Ran Salman and Ordonez feat. The Peacemaker Project     Highlights: Started where I left it with “Summertime Sadness” which turns out to be one of the weakest tracks of the set. A bit lazy of me.. Begining  the big bass line theme with Andrey Exx's great remix of the classic “ Be Good”. Whoever is the vocalist is amazing and I love the atmosphere the production has achieved. Continuing with the male vocalist of the same classic, this was a fluke but a happy one. “Be Good to Me” by Croatia Squad. Listen from the break at 15:36 and be in bliss with the disco keys they have introduced in what was a rather dark and progressive rendition. With the nest track “Feel Good” the set is at cruising spend. The Moe Turk Remix of the Ran Salman and Ordonez track is just top shelf progressive indie house. “Never You Mind” by Kant..  I LOVE anything Kant is currently producing.. From Denmark, those gys are subtle, inspired.. Released in 2014, this is going straight into my top ten.. Do not miss!! In case you did not get the heavy hint DO NOT MISS!! And maybe, just maybe buy the track on Beatport.. “Mirage” by Vanilla Ace. From London, very talented, remixers of Basement Jaxx and Nora en Pure. “Mirage” is again key and bass driven with a voice sample ( did not even had to had it).. I t is so easy to listen to and yet so intricate. Deep, Progressive or Chill you choose. “Barfuss auf Wolken” from KlangKueunstler .. which translates (I think) as “Walking Barefoot on the Cloud”.. My niece recognized the sample from somewhere, I didn’t.. Thank you Lars. Indie German track, with great guitar, showing how fusion should be done.. Happy tune! “Come with Me” sexy deep house based again on a big bass line, perfect percussions and synths p(continued)

2014 March Introspection 1.0 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4790

Introspection 1.0   Looking inwards for a few sets as in order to progress, one has to allow time for Introspection.   The Menu: from the somewhat darker, Indie and Nu-Disco side of Progressive House.   Do not be alarmed with the first track, just play along even if you think like my eleven year old son that old rockers are not your cup of tea.. The rest is a very solid, clever and original upload. Let yourselves go with this one, reward beckons!   Two acknowledgments: Richard Vasquez aka Doctor Love (check his podcast here) because under his influence I am trying to be more eclectic and less mechanical in my mixing. Lars who is driving my slow shift to progressive and trance and is introducing me to German Progressive house. Thanks guys, genuinely grateful.   I hope you give this Introspection series a fair listen. In the next few sets, you will discover new tunes, new sounds and you will be listening to some very clever music. It will not be boring! At worst, it will be mildly challenging but extremely rewarding..   Since I preventively gave ourselves 3 hours of soulful vocal happy pills before this Series we really should not experience any severe withdrawal symptoms for a few weeks.   Now dim the lights and relax..   Playlist:   1978 Private Investigations (Remastered Live Version). But I can feel the intimate connection between progressive rock and progressive house.. Furthermore knowing that this was recorded live in front of an audience of 110,000 blows my mind.  The respect I have for artists who can not only write, sing but also perform at that level is limitless. So I hope you will enjoy it and if like my 11 year old you have a problem with “the cheesy sax” it is Ok there are a lot of very good tunes to come in the set..   Vanessa Daou’s “Loves Lives in the Dark”. The track prefigures what I hope the set will be. Great production, big BIG driving bassline and interesting left field vocals.   “But Maybe” from the great Hamburg based German progressive house producer Oliver Schories. Instrumental cut, with great pads nice breaks.. I am telling you the German Progressive House scene is where interesting things are happening..   “Julia” all about the atmosphere and a massive bassline.. If you can listen to it on a good system or headphones the better.. I love those melodic journey tracks. I “had’ to add some vocal samples. As most of you now well know, Xtian would have trouble going through 30 minutes without any vocals..    And yes I did go a little bit heavy on the sample but I was in MY journey and it felt gooood!   “Left Your Love” by Climbers..  2014 March More Happy Pills | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4951

More Happy Pills....Follow up of previous Happy Pill. Proviso: Been sitting on this Intro for a while, thought it fitted the Happy Pill Theme.. By no means am I NOT taking mental health as a serious issue. It simply is! Directly or indirectly, we all have had some experience of how tragic, debilitating or simply sad, mental health issues are. This being clarified, we still can have a little smile about it.   Except for the intro (it’s been a long time I have used a little intro sample due to wife’s constant disapproval J), this set is a direct cut from a set I play a fortnight ago for a few friends on our deck. Another dose of Soulful, happy house tunes to wrap up the Australian summer. I handpicked the tunes, most of them are very current and my favourites producers are there. It also marks the time where I have to distance myself from Soulful House and revisit a more progressive, darker, more challenging musical landscape. I should re-upload next week, therefore stay tuned.   Playlist: Intro MH Hotline 2014 The Truth (Original). U-Ness, Jed Sed & Samson Lewis 2013 Everybody Wants Something (Joey Negro Strip Mix). Their Miami 2014 sampler compilation is out, run on Traxsource and buy it.   Joey Negro’s Everybody Wantts Something.. Classic Joey’s Happy tune, easy listening.   Two tunes featuring the immensely talented vocalist Andrea Love.. “Running to Love”, which if it weren’t for my connection to U-Ness would have headlined the set and “More Love”. Richard Earnshaw, Maurice Joshua, Mike Dunn and Steven Stone: make no mistake, this is current Soulful House royalty!!!   OtherSoul’s Little Bootleg « La La La ».. When I played it, I noticed an eleven year old girl grooving to it, realizing that I may not have known the tune but she certainly did. I have been using a lot of OtherSoul’s Soundcloud remixes lately. Two talented producers from Spain, check them out.   The Shane D remix of “Caribbean Queen”.  Notwithstanding the initial reaction of people close to me, of the “oh come on, not this” sort, I can share one thing with you: they were ALL humming it…   As for “Sing It Back”.. well it is… “Sing It back” and for the purpose of More Happy Pills. I will never grow tired of it.. Also it was a throwback of my NYD set (still struggling to decide whether worth the upload), which ended with a mega Xtian Edit of this very tune..   Hope you got the full dose of More Happy Pill, for the next one will be less sweet...   Enjoy, à très bientôt!   Xtian

 2014 Feb Happy Pill | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4788

Happy Pill   I actually have a few more installments of the "Deep in China" session and the NYD set to upload and yet ended up publishing this little nugget. Two factors: on the one hand felt like something a bit lighter & happier as I was starting to accumulate new 2014 tunes on my HD and on the other (my fellow podcasters will understand) once a set is recorded and sits there for a few weeks, it needs to be pretty good to actually be dug up for publishing.. most of the times they stay on the drive because we (hope) the next one will be better.   Happy Pill.... A very vocal house set with happy tunes to bring a smile to our faces. I have lately been watching the news and I cannot say that the reports from the Ukraine, Syria and Venezuela are particularly cheerful.. Happy Pill time then.. Tunes from 2014 or late 2013 with some oldies mixed in-between.   Playlist:   2013 Luv 4 You. Scott Diaz 2013 I Like 2 Party. Samir Maslo Vs. Oliver Cheatham 2013 Beautiful (Original mix). Hakan Kabil feat. Majuri 2013 Need You Tonight (Scott Wozniak Bootleg Remix). INXS 2013 Dreams (Director's Cut Classic Mix). Vintage Lounge Orchestra 2013 The Otherside (Original Mix). Carl Hanaghan feat. Roz Brown 2014 The Madness of Last Night Serenity (Original Mix) [Xtian Mash-Up] Lars Behrenroth feat. Marc Evans 2014 If We Only Had Tonight (Original Mix vs Carl Hanaghan Discopolis Remix). Husky 2013 Tonight (Earnshaw's Deep & Modified Mix). Mike Scott, and Richard Earnshaw, feat. Chappell 2013 Boy Is Mine (OtherSoul Classic Mix).Brandy & Monica 2013 Everybody Loves (Monte Remix.)  Phil & Dan 2001 Loving You (Vincenzo's Remix). Smurf & Perry feat. Concha Buika 2014 Something About the Rain [Xtian Lil’ Edit]. Noa feat Adele 2012 Settle Down (Scott Wozniak Remix). Kimbra   Highlights:   First track “Luv 4 You” from the king of Jackin’ House Scott Diaz.. Tune sets the mood.. If you do not like it, do not progress, your sad mood might lighten up, do not risk it.. Impeccable production.   “I Like 2 Party” from Samir Maslo and Oliver Cheathman..  It has that Disco atmosphere which comes from the rich production, the echoed vocal sample and is written in a key F#m which I think is perfect for House Music... Just lovely.   “Beautiful” from Hakan Kabil, multi-layered tune which might confront some, though I think it ticks all the right boxes and Majuri is a great vocalist.. Not a simple track at all..    “Need You Tonight”. With the biopic of INXS being currently shown on Australian TV, I thought it would be fun to use this immense remix from Scott Wozniak. It shows his immense talent as a remix/producer. The man can touch anything and enrich it.. Scott just crowd-sourced his first artist album, I simply cannot wait!   Another new take of an old classic, “Dreams” from Fleetwood Mac by no other than Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper.. I have always, will always love FK’s production. Rich, wide, smooth I am running out of  adjectives.. And if you want to feel the FK’s touch just scroll to 20:39:00 and bang one second after  that bass you hear coming, this IS FK signature right there.. I heard it too many times live not to recognize it, it just pumps precisely when the tune needs it.. Without it the track would be perfect but lacking soul, lacking a heart beat.. The Bass line is the pulse. Enjoy!   "The OtherSide".. well it is a bridge track. I needed to change key and keep the wide production theme going, set being recorded live .. key and beat matched, it was enough for me.. Well… you got a House Diva. First time I notice Roz Brown as a vocalist.. She can sing!   My mash-up of Lars Behrenroth’s ( of Deeper Shades of House fame) “Madness Last Night”.. Many reasons to be happy there.. Lars is one of the(continued)
