Spring has Sprung Pt.3 (Vintage Trance for Vintage Ravers)   Third and last part.. It got a bit more interesting from there on..   A bit of context.. For a few years, our crew has been yearning for some good old uplifting Trance.. Back to the 90’s.. I was quite apprehensive about it, not being sure that we ,still, actually could handle any sustained trance.   I did learn a few things whilst mixing the set and I will come back to that later, but I am happy to report that I was proven wrong., Trance can work if appropriately tailored to the crowd.   Straight out of the mixer with all the imperfections of live mixing.. Be kind! I learned a valuable lesson for the next time I play Trance: A) Maximum length of set should be 1h30 B) Unless the track is an ABSOLUTE ANTHEM  (and there are max 10 of these all around) no track should be more than 4/5 minutes, therefore only radio edits to be used in the future. C) Attention span of the punters is 2 minutes if nothing change ( levels etc...).   I will be back with an original mix within a fortnight..   To our friends.. Trance-Mission Episode 02 … “As the Rush Comes”   We left the Ambient realm, dropped and landed into Tranceland. With its highs and lows, builds and snare drums, synths and pads! I tried to put together a set, which pursue the trance flow. Do you remember the anticipation, the wait, the tingling, the heat, the chills, the sweats, the raised hair on the skin and the glow? Do you remember the RUSH? Four months of gestation and labour! Time to let this one be judged by the community. Though sloppy at times, I did the best I could.. In spite of the rather chilled first tracks, "As the Rusch Come" has a definite Trance flavour. Beats per minute do not lie, we end up at 136 bpm, it is Trance! Or, how I was recently told, “Progressive Trance”. One word on the long hiatus between uploads: after a month of blissful downtime with the family in Europe, we faced a few tumultuous events once back in Oz. I neither had the time nor the inclination to listen or mix anything. Problems got sorted out and we are hopefully back to the pedestrian, uneventful rhythm I personally love. In many a ways, the break was timely. I was starting to do this just because “I had to”, which really negates the desire I have for a creative outlet. To Lars, I will answer your emails this week. You have my very public apology, I hope you understand. Back to “As The Rush Comes”: Trance can only be a journey, something with a beginning, ebb and flows, to culminate as  build-up to a massive “hands up in the air” closing track. I do like what I attempted but would love someone with real talent to pursue it to gives this idea the love and care it requires. I sent it to a well-respected friend of mine.. His reaction was priceless “Christian, have you ever heard of mastering?” Well, yes I have but wouldn’t even know where to start! Nammos’ Beach Funk   Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Sade, Diana Ross, George Michael, Mary J Bilge, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Daft Punk, Kathy Brown, Michelle Weeks, Chaka Khan... Needless to say this is not a progressive set..   Funky and Disco summer beats on the menu.  As I seldom venture in that space, I am unsure as to the quality but the Greek sun called for it. Considering some of the crap I heard during our holidays, I cannot be worse than some.   Continuing the Mykonos holiday vibe. Originally dropped whislt staying at the Semeli Hotel, set was edited as it was better suited with the feel of Nammos Beach, Psarou, Mykonos http://www.nammos.gr/ Nammos Beach is an infinitely more stylish (and more expensive) alternative to all other offerings in Mykonos. A potentially cool place where, given the right crowd, the beat will slowly creep up and loungers/sitters become dancers, taking over the table tops.   We spent a day at Nammos with the children. They could not quite get the vibe (and to be honest it wasn’t there) but the potential could be felt and deserved better than the endless re-runs of “Besame Mucho” remixes and old French 70’s/80’s standards (for the froggies out there I heard: Michel Fugain, Joe Dassin, Dalida..). My guess is one plays for what they think the audience wants... By the time it got semi-pumping, the kids were over it and so were we. Looking at the crowd, with the standard statuesque models who cannot move to save themselves, the plastic fantastic 50 (or was it 60 ?) y.o. striving to attract attention, glancing at the girl, who albeit not “perfect”, was just getting it and moving gracefully to the beat, I reflected on the ever-so-true egalitarian dimension of the dance floor.. People; it is not how you LOOK on the dance floor that counts, it is how you MOVE! From there it was a short hop to decide to drop my own little set, which I am pretty sure would have got the punters dancing.. Yes, one may have to drop 3/4 tunes the crowd knows but one can still try to be inventive, original and somewhat current. Therefore, instead of “Besame Mucho”, “The Girl from Ipanema”, "Copacabana" and French standards from the 70’s, I would have played this selection of funky tunes and would not have looked half as bored as the resident DJ…   Playlist: 2014 Love Never Felt So Good (DJ Fudje Tribute Remix vs. Mark Di Meo & Tony Loreto Remix). Warning !!!!! Hiatus on the Trance Mission I embarked earlier as I found myself overseas without my external drive, having left home all the tunes I intended to use for that purpose. On a Trance-Mission: Episode 01 (The Ambient Set)   Off to a Journey into Trance..  and if I am not delusional the first port of call is a good one.. Dust off the glow sticks, the furry boots, the neon T-shirts, the lycra leggings, the kandi, the beads necklaces, the multi pocket flarry pants, the lasers and get ready for minor keys! In the next few weeks, across several uploads, I will attempt to take you back to those memorable days with (mostly) current productions. I am attempting to find a modern. adult, progressive Trance vibe.. I have been burning with the desire to build one of those journeys for a while. It is a slow process and I usually give up! This time, in the next 4 uploads, I have set  myself the challenge to take you there.. I usually stop midway either for lack of good current material or because once the higher bpm region (130 to 140 bpm) are reached, I find that frenzy aspect of Trance possibly too hard to stomach or probably just not something I would know when and how to appreciate. Yet, as far as EDM is concerned, Trance was my first love and nothing, NOTHING can replace the memories of a great Trance journey.   So here we are... at the onset of the Journey!   Episode One: The Ambient Set We will be crossing over from Progressive to Ambient, Down-Tempo, Deep, Trance, even some classical and opera.  One common thread to the set: all tracks have a balearic vibe.. Starting very tame but those with keen ears and kindred spirit will regognize that, without a shred of doubt, we are on a trance journey! It will pick up in the next sets!   If you do not dig Trance, this episode will be bearable but as we progress you may want to zone out for a little bit. I will slot a soulful one somewhere to keep you interested !   The only rule I gave myself for this project was to restrict the number of old Trance classics to only 2 per set, to mix them 100% live to have a real journey feel, and finally to allow myself as many edits as I wanted in order to keep my interest fresh until this project is finished.   Playlist:     Intro Warp Journey Intro (Space Chor Mix).
