I Play for Paris Pt.1 Eclectic Lounge with a few unexpected finds and some very tongue-in-cheek pop mashups..   One month ago some nihilistic losers butchered 130 women and men in Paris… Forget about the social media meltdown, France is my country and Paris my city. Whereas France is actually far from being the model country it aspires to be, by attacking “her” for being the “capital of prostitution and obscenity”, those bastards just proved that somehow those symbols of secularism and freedom are still alive and worth celebrating. Forward to a few days ago… I was unable to mix anything, which wasn’t dark and filled with anger for a month until we decided to have an impromptu party. The core nexus of friends who could make it facing Xtian who was wondering what would spark his muse and how he could get out of his negative loop and make himself and his friends happy. I played a 4 hour set, took about 20 minutes to get into it but once I found the right format for this forum it flowed. Got out of my spleen and played fun eclectic jams, old and new edits of tunes everyone knew but cuts they had not heard before. Whereas my usual format is to play current paid releases in whatever genre takes my fancy, I went into a “Richard Vasquez/Doctor Love” mode and played for me and for my friends. Lots of repeats but somehow that’s how we felt! We wanted to feel good and were oh-so very ready to try our best.   Four hours later, they were asking for more and pushing me to go harder and louder. This set is certainly not required listening. In the same way that a biography of say Stephen Fry is not required reading but is still an entertaining read, this set should be a bit of fun to have in the background.   I have all those unplayed recent soulful tunes in my hard drive. Let’s Play!   A bit of background:   Location: household, Melbourne, Australia. Date: 19-09-15 first day of mid-term holidays. Temper Gauge: immediate risk of major family breakdown!   First day of holidays and tempers were at breaking point! Kids complaining they were bored, Spouse close to losing it having to pick up everyone’s mess lying around, pleading for help and getting blank hostile gazes as only responses... I propose to put some music on.. The communal answer I get is: “You haven’t done anything fun for aaaages “.. Daggers straight to my parental, spouse and music lover heart!   I rig up the full DJ set-up, connect the lasers and lights, pump up the volume and start playing something I had half put together during my travels..   Having in mind that they wanted something new but not just new, that they NEEDED something fun and uplifting, sing-a-long and dance-a-long tunes, I shifted to trusted classics of 2007/2009, chose those uplifting progressive trance keys which induce wellness and movement, span and watched…   Devices were slowly put down, lips started humming and eventually singing and when I saw my wife’s hands starting to move to the music I knew I had them on the correct path of unplugging from their chores,  IPhones, IPads and IMacs to just PLAY and enjoy the moment.   They were hearing tracks they knew and some they didn’t. Grant Nelson magic!   Ann Nesby/Spen “ I Feel” is as good soulful house currently on release. The first remix from Jerome Robbins is pure soulful sound, vocal in front, big funky baseline, with a distinct gospel vibe.. Respect! The second one (DJ Spen, Thommy Davis & Gary Hudgins Remix) is straight out of the 80’s disco book with a Giorgio Moroder sound, which I am sure is not fortuitous.   “It’s You” have always loved the track since I first heard it a few years ago. Mousse T gives it a little disco up feel. I would entice you to look on the Defected video feel for a live rendition of “It’s You” at Sonar 2014 in Barcelona.. I was there, seeing a crowd off realizing what a live vocal sound can bring in terms of emotions and swag was unforgettable.. Vocalist being more than cute might have played a role as well.   “Running to Love” what more can I write but Andrea Love as a vocalist, Steven Stone and Earnshaw on the production table.. House does not get better and this track is well within my top 5 soulful tracks of the last couple of years.   “Pennies from Heaven”, another track, another soul diva but all packaged with the edginess of Inner City and Kevin Saunderson. Soulful tracks were beginning to accumulate in my hard drive and I thought it was time to present it in a series of sets. I have been using a lot of their mashups lately. Incredibly talented French duo, most of their tracks available as free downloads on SC. Their take on the Temptations/Doll Combers mash is remarkable and even if it brought the original mood of the set down, I still enjoyed dropping it. The MJ mash is not mad either. “A Gentleman’s Song FK” from Mark di Meo is the absolute stand out of the set. The song, which I believe refer to Frankie Knuckles, has the FK feel and is impeccably constructed. The way every instrument is introduced, very similar to a jazz or a classical construction is truly sublime. I have been using a lot of their mashups lately. Incredibly talented French duo, most of their tracks available as free downloads on SC. Their take on the Temptations/Doll Combers mash is remarkable and even if it brought the original mood of the set down, I still enjoyed dropping it. The MJ mash is not mad either. “A Gentleman’s Song FK” from Mark di Meo is the absolute stand out of the set. The song, which I believe refer to Frankie Knuckles, has the FK feel and is impeccably constructed. The way every instrument is introduced, very similar to a jazz or a classical construction is truly sublime. I misspelled Jaime Lewis (Purple Music) on Traxsource and it returned Jamie and this very good soulful track.
