PODCAST!!! Lakers coaching search, the NBA Finals, Donald’s quiz, action heroes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:35:27

It’s been over a month since our last show. Then again, it’s been even longer since Mike D’Antoni resigned, and the Lakers still haven’t settled their coaching search, so really, who’s the turtle here? The show can be heard by clicking on the module, and a list of talking points can be found below. Among the high points… * We take a look at the latest headlines. Kentucky forward Julius Randle, who’s landed on many a mock draft at #7, may need foot surgery (http://espn.go.com/nba/draft2014/story/_/id/11070671/nba-executives-worried-julius-randle-improperly-healed-foot). Should this give the Lakers pause about potentially selecting him? Kevin Love sounds like he’s leaving Minnesota, whether for Los Angeles or elsewhere. Donald Sterling is hiring private eyes (and not the kind Hall and Oates sang about ) to dig up dirt on David Stern, Adam Silver, and the league’s 29 owners. Should folks be nervous? Plus, we test our mental capacity against Sterling’s! * We discuss the points recently raised by Brian regarding the Lakers’ coaching search. Is their reported insistence on an experienced coach cutting them off from potentially better options? Does it reflect an inflated and potentially dangerous perception of where the franchise currently stands? Is Kobe’s presence altering the front office’s thought process? * As of this recording, San Antonio is up 3-1 on Miami in an increasingly one-sided NBA Finals. What are the key factors for both teams’ respective success and struggles? * Brian tests my knowledge of movie action heroes. I acquitted myself well enough, but nonetheless owe Sigourney Weaver and Vin Diesel apologies after a couple of embarrassing brain cramps. The post PODCAST!!!  Land O'Lakers Podcast: Who replaces Mike D'Antoni? K.D., Kobe Bryant, and hoops psychology, plus Sterlings! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:49:50

The NBA has been a busy place since we last recorded, and not just because of the playoffs. Donald Sterling has been banished by the NBA, and Mike D'Antoni banished himself, perhaps before the Lakers could do it for him. Meanwhile, Kevin Durant not only set the Mother's Day bar at an impossibly high level for the rest of us with his Instant Classic MVP speech, he seemed to reveal a changing dynamic in the nature of NBA "alpha dogs." So plenty to talk about, for sure. Click on the module to listen, and use these handy talking points as a guide: * We kick off our headlines with all things Sterling. First, in another recording, this time picked up by Radar Online, Donald Sterling says he's not a racist. He also says he said that stuff in the TMZ tape because he wanted to "play" with V. Stiviano (http://radaronline.com/exclusives/2014/05/donald-sterling-racist-rant-secret-recording-v-stiviano-sex/). And we don't mean checkers. (Ewww....) Not to be outdone, Shelly Sterling made it clear she's not letting go of the team without a fight. Is this a money grab or a problem that will fester for the NBA going forward? * Andrew Bynum is officially done for the year. Is he also done for good? * D'Antoni is gone. Why picking a replacement isn't simply a matter of finding a coach with an attractive style of play. Can the Lakers really identify the best candidate when the roster is nearly guaranteed to turn over substantially in each of the next three seasons? * Has the nature of the NBA alpha dog changed? Is The Kobe Way the only way? What does the Kobification of L.A. over the last (almost) two decades mean for the superstar who follows Bryant with the Lakers? * AAK! We share our ultimate podcast guests, living and dead.

PODCAST!!! The Donald Sterling fiasco, and Mike D’Antoni’s future | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:48:06

It’s no exaggeration that since audio of Clippers owner Donald Sterling making racist comments to his mistress was leaked to first to TMZ and then Deadspin, all hell has broken loose. Sterling was hardly a stranger to racial controversies, but being able to connect his (alleged) voice to his (not alleged) world view has raised awareness and dander to a brand new level. Safe to say, this is a mess, and everyone is waiting on pins and needles for the league to take decisive action. Oh, in the meantime, reports surfaced Friday the Lakers apparently might keep Mike D’Antoni around next season. And said reports have barely made a ripple. As the old saying goes, timing is everything. The show can be heard by clicking on the module above, and a list of talking points can be found below… * Many believe Sterling’s comments don’t just come across as racist, but “plantation” racist. We don’t disagree, although it’s worth adding “paranoid,” “disturbing” and “just plain weird” to the list of adjectives. Then again, racist attitudes often are. * I wrote about the shared blame that comes with Donald Sterling flourishing this long. The NBA deserves the biggest share of responsibility, but frankly, many parties have dropped the ball. * As Brian noted, the time for players and fans to boycott isn’t necessarily now. * Never let it be said the K Bros aren’t fair in their coverage. We do offer Sterling some respect on one count. * This incident is the latest example of how, generally speaking, a mistress is just a bad idea. And are you among the many, many, many listeners who’ve gotten down — if you know what I mean – to a K Bros podcast? * What will the punishment for Sterling be, and when/how will it be doled out? * Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Mark Heisler reports the Lakers have decided to keep Mike D’Antoni next season? If true, what would be the rationale? * Speaking of boycotts, Laker fans will threaten one if D’Antoni remains the coach? If that really happened, would it matter? * Pau Gasol said on his website that a return to the Lakers could be possible, but some changes would be needed for that to be the case. We have no idea what he’s referring to. Click above to play, or just  (http://content.blubrry.com/kambrothers/LOL_3.20_2.0_2.mp3)download the show here. Hope you enjoy it.  PODCAST! LA’s front office rank, D’Antoni and/or Meeks returning (?) , Kobe and Trayvon Martin, facts about 1960 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:42:36

The good news? The Lakers entered Friday’s action with only seven games remaining before the season mercifully comes to an end. The bad news? It’s not six. The show can be heard by clicking on the module and below is a list of talking points. Among the high points. * We take a look at the latest headlines. Phil Jackson says CAA ties won’t influence him as Knicks Prez. Dick Bavetta has set a seriously amaze-balls new record! Will Jabari stay in school? Are the Lakers really the NBA’s 16th best front office? * Bleacher Report’s Kevin Ding says the Lakers might not show Mike D’Antoni the door this offseason. Don’t kill the messengers, by the way. We’re just the guys discussing the potential reasons why. * We play another episode of “Should The Lakers Bring Back This Guy,” with Jodie Meeks as the latest contestant. * As of this recording, the Lakers have exactly 50 losses, which ties the second-highest total in franchise history, set in 1960 when the team was still housed in Minneapolis! To illustrate just how long it’s been since the Lakers sat on 50 losses, I quiz Brian on his knowledge of 1960, and offer some fun facts about 1960! (FYI: The all-time mark for losses is 52 during the 1975 season, which means an “All About 1975!” segment is waiting in the wings.) * We discuss Kobe Bryant’s comments in the New Yorker regarding black causes and Trayvon Martin, along with the way stories like these are covered in the world of 24/7 news and social media.  PODCAST! Kobe Bryant vs. rebuilding, Pau’s vertigo, Swaggy robbed, Kanye as the lesser of three evils | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:54:44

The Lakers are now undefeated in games played at Staples Center where Phil Jackson watches as Knicks President from a luxury suite. If Mike D’Antoni can figure out a way to replicate this formula, the team may be able to end this season on a surprisingly positive note. The show can be heard by clicking on the module, and a list of talking points can be found below. Among the high points. * We stroll through the latest headlines. LeBron James and Adam Silver will meet this offseason to discuss the possible elimination of sherseys. Greveis Vasquez declares Kevin Durant “Jesus.” (http://nba.si.com/2014/03/22/kevin-durant-like-jesus-greivis-vasquez-thunder-raptors/) Mark Cuban calls out the NFL’s impending business model.  Is the Eastern Conference now a legitimate playoff race? * Kobe Bryant sat down with ESPN’s Darren Rovell to discuss basketball and business. As far as hoops goes, Kobe offered his faith in Jeanie and Jim Buss, but reiterated his impatience with a slow and steady rebuild. How big of a problem is this moving forward? * In the meantime, Kobe Inc. has opened up shop (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/10663439/kobe-bryant-announces-new-company-kobe-inc), with Bryant lending his presence and dollars to a sports drink called BodyArmour. How does this investment reflect the prospects of Kobe’s post-playing career? * Pau Gasol has vertigo. No. Seriously. Vertigo. At this points, are there any bizarre injuries and ailments left for the Lakers to endure? * Nick Young got robbed Sunday night, but the joke may actually be on the assholes who stole his clothes and jewelry. * It’s time for AAK!!! What movies have scared the K Bros most over the years? Rank the following in terms of quality company: Kanye West, Lindsay Lohan, Justin Bieber. * The New York Post reported Monday that former NBA player Quinton Ross was found murdered. As it turns out, the deceased was a different man named Quinton Ross.  Adam Carolla: Patent trolls and podcasting | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:18:54

It's a change of pace for the podcast, as we welcome noted comedian/podcaster Adam Carolla to the show, talking trolls. Patent trolls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patent_troll), specifically. Carolla, along with a few other high profile podcasters, are being sued by a company called Personal Audio LLC who claim he - and all podcasters - are violating absurdly broad patents they hold on the infrastructure of podcasting, and basically the concept of podcasting generally. The same company has sued a bunch of companies, fishing for settlements, with some success. Carolla, however, is fighting back. We talk to him about patent trolls, why he's chosen to take a stand, how people can help, and why they need to. A couple ways interested parties can help... First, Donating to Carolla's legal defense fund (http://fundanything.com/patenttroll?locale=en), and second by attending a fundraiser next week at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center (http://www.laughstub.com/event.cfm?id=304335), featuring Carolla, Marc Maron, Jimmy Kimmel, and more. Interesting stuff on an issue you may not be familiar with. To learn a little more about patent trolling, check out this segment from This American Life (http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/496/when-patents-attack-part-two). It will not give you a higher opinion of lawyers or our legal system.

Land O'Lakers: Phil Jackson is gone... so what now? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:44:07

It's not necessarily that a ton of things have happened in the land o' Lakers since we last recorded the Land O'Lakers podcast, just that the thing that did go down was a doozie. Jordan Hill missed the team picture. That, and Phil Jackson took a pretty plum gig with the Knicks. (Do I really need to add a link-to-the-news, here? If PJ-to-NY is information you haven't yet heard, I suspect you're here on accident.) And fair to say, the average Lakers fan reacted with a combination of anger, fear, and... no, anger and fear pretty much covers it. No surprise, it was the major topic of conversation for the newest show, which can be heard by clicking the module above (or the link below). A list of the major talking points... * Before the main course, some passed apps in the form of headlines. Deadspin takes over the Hawks' Twitter feed, more examples of people not understanding how social media works, new Commish Adam Silver says jersey ads are coming sooner rather than later (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/10637752/commissioner-adam-silver-says-nba-jerseys-sponsor-logos-future). * With Phil gone, what happens now? Can Jim Buss perform well enough to shift the narrative on him? Can the narrative even be shifted? * What about Kobe Bryant? How will he handle what could be a tough 2014-15 season, and who knows what after that? How much do his complaints really matter? * We play "Should the Lakers Keep This Guy Next Season?" Let's spin the wheel with Jordan Farmar. * It's time for some AAK!!! Better starring duo for a buddy cop movie: The K bros or the Sklar Bros? Is the world actually a sphere? Who wins between Andy and Brian in a fist fight?

Land O'Lakers: Podcast! The future for Steve Nash, PJ and D'Antoni. Plus, talk of death, Rocky IV, and Travolta! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:08:31

We figured y'all would need some kinda entertainment after Thursday's debacle against the Clippers. Hopefully, this helps take the edge off. Among the highlights: * We talk a stroll through the headlines. Carmelo Anthony is reportedly running low on patience in New York, and Joakim Noah is reportedly recruiting the All-Star to join him in Chicago. (And speaking of disgruntled All-Stars, I think Phoenix could/should make a serious, credible push for Kevin Love this offseason.) Pop offers his coaching secrets. The Pistons deny rumors that Isiah Thomas could replace Joe Dumars (and I take the indefensible position that they should). Royce White gets a 10-day deal with the Kings. * Much has been written (and filmed) these days about Steve Nash's uncertain future with the Lakers, which could include retirement, the stretch provision, or... believe it or not... another year on the roster (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1981804-why-steve-nash-is-expected-to-get-one-last-chance-to-salvage-la-lakers-career), whether physically up to the task or not. What, if anything, does Nash owe the Lakers if it grows even more apparent taking the court is a pipe dream? Is he obligated to step away from his career and the nearly $10 million? * We discuss Sam Amick's wide-ranging interview with Phil Jackson (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/2014/03/02/phil-jackson-qa-coaching-returning-los-angeles-lakers-jeanie-buss/5945745/) for USA Today. What lies ahead for Phil as a coach, a potential member of the Laker brass, or a member of a front office anywhere in the league? * Tweeps complaining that Mike D'Antoni didn't play Jordan Hill and Chris Kaman during a WIN in Portland reflects just how much Laker fans despise Ol' Pringles. (That, and they just don't get the notion of playing for the future.) Well, we hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but dude might be around next season. * It's time for AAK!!! What kind of mask would we wear with a broken nose? We rank, based on several criteria, "The Karate Kid," "Rocky IV," "Wildcats," "Major League," and "Teen Wolf." Who's the bigger train wreck between John Travolta and Mel Gibson? Would we prefer to die by fire, drowning or hungry lion?

Land O'Lakers: Pau's complaints, Swaggy P's future, the NFL N-Word penalty and Harold Ramis | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:00:38

Only 24 games left this season. We promise. No give backs. The show can be heard by clicking on the module, and a list of talking points is below. Among the highlights: * We take a look at the latest headlines. Jason Collins jerseys are in huge demand (http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/story/_/id/10515923/jason-collins-jersey-brooklyn-nets-made-available-high-demand). Ray Felton is arrested on gun charges, the latest incident in a disastrous Knicks season. The NBA is considering a bigger court and a four-point line. Our thoughts? * After Tuesday's loss to the Pacers, Pau Gasol issued public complaints (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/10523800/mike-dantoni-los-angeles-lakers-fires-back-pau-gasol-keep-house)about the team's style of play and an overall lack of discipline. Clearly he and Mike D'Antoni have well-documented issues and will never see eye-to-eye, but are these gripes more than just a player venting against his coach? Is MDA failing to keep his players, particularly young newbies Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks, in line? * It's looking more and more like Kobe Bryant could actually miss the rest of this season. The implications between now and April are obviously pretty trivial, but how does Kobe's health complicate the offseason moves? In the meantime, are even the die-hard Kobe fans beginning to see him as more mortal? * We introduce a brand new segment called, "Should The Lakers Bring This Guy Back Next Year?" In which we ask, "Should the Lakers bring this guy back next year?" Reasonable money and contract length assumed, of course. First up, Nick Young, who has  a player option for next season he's widely expected not to opt. Does Swaggy P play a role in this team's future, and will his relationship with the rather fetching rapper Iggy Azalea (http://www.gq.com/entertainment/sports/201403/nick-young-iggy-azalea-photos-march-2013#slide=1) hinder the chances of retaining him? * The NFL is expected to institute a new rule penalizing players for on-field use of the N-Word. Is this a good idea? How prevalent, in our experience, is the word in the NBA workplace? Would the Association ever consider following the NFL's lead? * It's time for AAK!!! Would we rather attend our favorite band's final concert, or our favorite team's Game 7 with a title on the line? I share the very weird details of my worst date. And finally, we talk about our favorite movies from the recently departed Harold Ramis.

Land O'Lakers: The trade deadline has come and gone | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:31:02

So Thursday noon has come and gone, and what did we learn? The trade deadline is but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more; it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Full disclosure: The first sentence is totally original, but most of that next part was borrowed from Macbeth. Still, it's nonetheless fair to say Trade Deadline 2014! was a relative bust, without a whole lot of action locally or across the Association. The Lakers made their move Wednesday night, sending Steve Blake to Golden State for MarShon Brooks and Kent Bazemore. The day's big blockbuster (relatively speaking) involved sending a B-ish player (Evan Turner) to Indiana for a once-pretty awesome wing (Danny Granger). The move could absolutely impact this year's title chase, but overall the day was defined by Twitter waiting around for something cool to happen. But good news! In this case, "nothing" means something. Thursday was still important for the Lakers, for different reasons. Click on the module to listen, navigating with the helpful list of talking points below... * Breaking down the Blake deal. Did the Lakers get anything they might be able to use going forward? * Thursday, Mitch Kupchak said they don't consider the repeater tax to be a big issue. Is he being genuine? Should the Lakers be more concerned? * Do the Lakers overvalue their own guys? Do they know how to operate from anything but a position of great strength? * No first rounders and few second rounders changed hands Thursday. Stars, or the closest thing this market had to offer, generally stayed put. What does this say about today's NBA, and how does that impact the way in which the Lakers will have to rebuild? * Evaluating the more significant deals. Blake to Golden State, Turner to Indy, and..., mostly that. Finally, does the methodical, unhurried nature of Mitch Kupchak's speaking style hurt the Lakers as the deadline gets down to the final moments? We investigate. Ultimately, the Lakers are today more or less what they were on Tuesday, a disappointing development for those (understandably) hoping they'd be able to pick up some assets. Back to the drawing board.

Land O'Lakers: Steve Nash's future, Jason Collins, Michael Sam, and Philip Seymour Hoffman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:54:43

Who else is looking forward to the All-Star break and five full days without a Laker loss and (presumably, although no promises) a Laker injury? The show can be heard by clicking on the module and a list of talking points can be found below. Among the high points: * We take a look at the latest headlines. Adam Silver reportedly wants to raise the age limit to 20 (http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/02/08/among-adam-silvers-priorities-raising-nba-age-limit/). Chris Bosh will voice Asgardian hero Heimdall in an episode of Marvel's Hulk & the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. ...because of course he will. LeBron predicts he'll be one of the faces on the NBA Mount Rushmore (http://espn.go.com/nba/truehoop/miamiheat/story/_/id/10439666/lebron-james-says-among-nba-all-greats). Too brash a claim? And who would make the Land O' Lakers Podcast Mount Rushmore? * In our last show, Brian went to bat on behalf of Steve Nash (http://landolakers.com/2014/02/07/podcast-bizarre-wins-pau-gasol-limbo-steve-nashs-return-50-shades-sasha/), who'd been taking heat from fans calling for him to retire before he reached his 10th appearance, guaranteeing his 2015 salary would be off the books. Nash repaid this passionate plea by getting hurt again on Tuesday, which coincidentally marked appearance #10. Not cool, Nashty! In any event, is it a given Nash will retire next season, should his health fail to improve? If not, is it a guarantee the Lakers will use the stretch amnesty provision on him? * Adam Silver insists Jason Collins remains unemployed, to quote his old boss, for "basketball reasons," rather than his sexuality (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/10432967/adam-silver-says-nba-teams-made-basketball-decision-jason-collins). How believable is this claim? In the meantime, what can be gleaned from Collins' situation when it comes to SEC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Sam, who just came out of the closet ahead of the NFL draft (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/10/sports/michael-sam-college-football-star-says-he-is-gay-ahead-of-nfl-draft.html?_r=0)? * Time for some AAK!!! What, if anything, have we ever collected? We compare the fine careers and talents of Paul Giamatti and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. If we could train an animal to understand and truly befriend us, what species would we pick? Were Mike D'Antoni fired, would we endorse George Karl as a replacement?

If not, is it a guarantee the Lakers will use the stretch amnesty provision on him? * Adam Silver insists Jason Collins remains unemployed, to quote his old boss, for “basketball reasons,” rather than his sexuality (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/10432967/adam-silver-says-nba-teams-made-basketball-decision-jason-collins). How believable is this claim? In the meantime, what can be gleaned from Collins’ situation when it comes to SEC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Sam, who just came out of the closet ahead of the NFL draft (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/10/sports/michael-sam-college-football-star-says-he-is-gay-ahead-of-nfl-draft.html?_r=0)? * Time for some AAK!!! What, if anything, have we ever collected? We compare the fine careers and talents of Paul Giamatti and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. If we could train an animal to understand and truly befriend us, what species would we pick? Were Mike D’Antoni fired, would we endorse George Karl as a replacement?  Land O'Lakers: Bizarre wins, Steve Nash's return, Pau Gasol in limbo, 50 Shades of Sasha | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Steve Blake, Steve Nash, Jordan Farmar are back. Jodie Meeks and Nick Young are now out. The names on the injury list may change, but by and large, everything else remains the same, including a largely uninterrupted string of losses. Wish we had better news to report, but these podcasts are unfortunately based on true stories. The show can be heard by clicking on the module, and a list of talking points are below. Among the highlights: * A look at some headlines. Joakim Noah gets fined 15K for F-Bombing three referees. Can Magic Johnson, along with some fellow wealthy cohorts, save the Sparks as the new owners (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/story/_/id/10404829/magic-johnson-part-los-angeles-sparks-new-ownership-group)? And speaking of Earvin, he's gone from criticizing the Lakers' front office to offering his services as a recruiter. What effect will Andrew Bynum's presence have with the Pacers on and (especially) off the court? The Pelicans' arena has a new name, and it's equally yummy and league-approved. * Wednesday's win over the Cavs was, on so many levels, unforgettably strange, and probably cost Cleveland's now ex-G.M. Chris Grant his job (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/10413479/chris-grant-fired-cleveland-cavaliers-general-manager). (On a related note, Mike Brown did his friend and former boss precious few favors that night.) * Along with Steve Blake and Jordan Farmar, Steve Nash has returned to action. But unlike his fellow point guards, Canada's Favorite Son has stirred some angry feelings among Laker fans by stepping back onto the court. Is this justified? * Pau Gasol, forever on the block, has been most recently linked to the Phoenix Suns in another deal where the Lakers want more in return than just financial relief. Considering Gasol is currently/perpetually injured, 33-years old, and a potential rental, how much leverage do they really have in demanding a first round pick? Is the franchise playing with fire when it comes to their quest to move El Spaniard? * AAK!!! If you had to choose between the worlds presented by "28 Days Later," "World War Z," and "The Walking Dead," which is the most preferable zombie atmosphere? And speaking of "The Walking Dead," what are we most looking forward to in anticipation of Sunday's season premiere? And which erotic novel would we pick Sasha Vujacic to record as an audio book? (You read that last one right.)
