Podcast: Jim and Jeanie Buss’ relationship, Phil Jackson, third arms, Coen Brothers superheroes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:40:37

If we learned one thing from Ric Bucher’s profile of Jim and Jeanie Buss (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/print/604909) and Colin Cowherd’s follow up interview with Mitch Kupchak ( http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=9570685), it’s that the siblings have a working relationship remaining a long way from simpatico. Which means, of course, we learned nothing, because this has been public knowledge for years. Still, some interesting details emerged, worthy of a conversation. Among the talking points: * Were the Buss siblings better at keeping any philosophical disagreements behind closed doors, would it necessarily matter if they don’t see eye-to-eye? Fundamentally speaking, their jobs don’t contain a lot of overlap. * It’s impossible to overstate just how big a professional and personal adjustment learning to function without Dr. Buss remains for the Lakers organization and the Buss children. * Jim still finds himself taking crap for mistakes or dumb comments made 10+ years ago. Will he ever be able to shake the poor narrative? (Hint: Not if he doesn’t stop wearing baseball hats.) * Jeanie has absolutely earned her goodwill and respect among the Laker fan base, but there are some inherent and incredibly valuable advantages to her job that rarely, if ever, get acknowledged. * If Jeanie actually did take over basketball operations, how would she operate? * Kupchak, in so many words, made it clear he’d prefer Phil Jackson not be publicly critical of the Lakers, but is powerless to stop him. Could Jeanie? If so, why doesn’t she? * AAK!!! Can Jordan Hill actually become a stretch-four? What’s the best place for a third arm (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101660/?ref_=sr_1)? Which superhero would work best for a Coen Brothers movie? Who wins a fight between Clubber Lang (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084602/) and Ivan Drago (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089927/?ref_=sr_1)? * Brian and I (http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/70814/tyrann-mathieu-and-two-sides-of-sports) offer recommended reading.  Land O'Lakers Podcast: Lakers schedule breakdown, the reception for Dwight and Bynum, NBA headlines, AAK!!! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:36:19

Holy crap! A week steeped -- by offseason standards, if nothing else -- in actual news. The Lakers even have a schedule! Damn right we fired up the microphones and scheduled a session at "Studio Kamenetzky!" We can't waste an opportunity like this in August. The show can be heard by clicking on the module below and at the bottom of the page. Here is a breakdown of talking points. * Some recent headlines from around the league. Shabazz Muhammad gets booted (http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/twolves/2013/08/07/shabazz-muhammad-sent-home-from-nba-rookie-transition-program/2627919/). Michael Beasley gets busted (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/9544301/michael-beasley-phoenix-suns-arrested-suspected-marijuana-found). Dwyane Wade gets political (http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/dwyane-wade-sons-wear-hoodies-trayvon-martin-covery-030628988.html). And with Kurt Rambis on Mike D'Antoni's staff, will the Lakers get defensive -- in a good way -- next season? * The 2013-14 Lakers schedule (http://www.nba.com/lakers/schedule): Where is the easiest portion? The burliest? If the Lakers get off to a slow start, how might that impact their strategy over the course of the year? * What kind of reception will Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum and Mike Brown receive when they visit Staples Center next season? * SBNation.com recently ranked the Lakers 20th in their preseason Power Rankings (http://landolakers.com/2013/08/04/power-rankings-re-the-lakers-really-the-20th-best-team-in-the-nba/). Too high, too low or just right? How do the Lakers look compared to the rest of the conference? * AAK!!! We answer pressing questions from our Tweeps and Facebook friends. Did video actually kill the radio star (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8h5OEivJdA)? How should the Rockets and Royce White have handled their conflict during the now-Sixer forward's rookie season? (For those who missed it, White was a guest earlier this week for a very compelling, wide-ranging podcast (http://landolakers.com/2013/08/06/podcast-royce-white-on-mental-health-disorders-and-the-nba-basketball-music-and-twitter/).) Why don't more basketball players circumvent the NCAA and do a year in Europe, a'la Brandon Jennings? In today's PED drenched world of sports, would Kobe recovering quickly from Achilles surgery elicit rumors and suspicion? * Recommending reading/viewing! An article (http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/55962044/) and television show (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2406376/?ref_=sr_1) get the LO'L endorsement.  Podcast: Royce White on mental health advocacy, anxiety disorder, the NBA, music and Twitter | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:44:29

It would be a challenge to name an NBA rookie who created more controversy and headlines without logging a single minute of run than Philadelphia 76ers forward Royce White. Drafted last year by the Houston Rockets, White was widely regarded as a pote...

Land O'Lakers Podcast: Mitch Kupchak drops hints about the future, secret tanking?, and more | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Another week, another stoking of the Kamenetzky Brothers Podcasting Machine, a smoke-spewing testament to the ingenuity of man. (The machine, not the podcast.) Among the high points of this week's show: * We use a solid question via Facebook from Phil Loos to launch into a conversation about Mitch Kupchak's conversation with Mike Bresnahan of the L.A. Times. Kupchak says the team is playing to win. Is he telling the truth? Ought they embrace the tank? From there, we break down some revealing comments Kupchak made about the summer of 2014, and how the Lakers might approach free agency. Comments that should make Lakers fans feel good. * Elias Harris! * It looks like Lamar Odom won't be coming to L.A. At this point, it's reasonable to wonder where he'll end up this season, if anywhere. Could he go from Sixth Man of the Year in April of 2011 to out of the league in the fall of 2013? * Ask a Kamenetzky! What sport is best for non-sports fans to pick up in efforts to conform to societal norms? Should Lakers fans ignore Lakers-hating Bill Simmons? This weird-ass question, and a referendum on Kate Upton dance moves.

Land O'Lakers Podcast: Kobe Bryant's health, Potential starting 5's, Jim Buss and free agency 2014, "Ask a Kamenetzky!" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

For mere mortals, it ain't easy coming up with hot talk during the offseason. For the K Bros, it's just another day in the studio. Or as we call the studio, "Andy's House." Below is a list of talking points: * Speaking to NBA TV last week, (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/9490675/kobe-bryant-los-angeles-lakers-return-preseason-jim-buss-says) Jim Buss said he'd bet big money on Kobe Bryant being healthy enough to play preseason games. Was this simply an owner trying to rally a dispirited fan base or did Buss perhaps unnecessarily write a check Kobe's Achilles might not be able to cash? * While not as exciting as watching Brian predict next season's starting unit via Time Warner Cable SportsNet's telestrator (http://www.twcsportsnet.com/videos/2013/07/21/what-will-the-lakers-starting-five-look-like), we nonetheless prognosticate first fives with and without Kobe's services. * As Brian recently noted (http://landolakers.com/2013/07/19/mark-cubans-quest-is-a-cautionary-tale-for-the-lakers/), the Mavericks' recent struggles to land an A-List free agent could forecast potential issues for the Lakers. What kind of test does the Free Agent Summer of 2014 pose for Jim Buss? * It's time for another rousing edition of "Ask a Kamenetzky!" Better look: Bald and fit, full head of hair and fat or somewhere in between? Better album: Licensed to Ill (http://www.amazon.com/Licensed-Ill-Beastie-Boys/dp/B0000024JN) or Nevermind (http://www.amazon.com/Nevermind-Nirvana/dp/B000003TA4/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1374650657&sr=1-1&keywords=nevermind)? Better career: Metta World Peace or Lamar Odom? Plus, we pay respects to the late actor Dennis Farina. (Thanks to our tweep @VinceMarcial for this fantastic link of Farina expertly dropping F-Bombs.) * Has Rudy Gay solved his low efficiency shooting?

Land O'Lakers Podcast: Metta World Peace departs, free agents arrive, and more | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

The Dwight Howard dust has settled, at least a little, over the last week or so, but news keeps rolling in for the Lakers.  And as long as it does, we'll keep rolling out podcasts. The high points of our newest episode, or so we hope: * Metta World Peace is now a New York Knickerbocker (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/16/sports/metta-world-peace-says-he-has-deal-with-knicks.html?_r=0), signed to a free agent deal following the end of an eventful (and ultimately positive) run in L.A.. Any surprise the Lakers let him go? What exactly did the Lakers lose when making the decision to amnesty him? * MWP is gone, but the Lakers have made three (ok, technically, two) additions over the last few days, on top of last week's agreement with free agent center Chris Kaman (our thoughts on him, if you missed them, can be found around the 34-minute mark of our previous show). We break down the positives and negatives of Nick Young, Wesley Johnson, and the expected-to-be-signed former Laker Jordan Farmar. * Howard is officially in Houston, and already looks more comfortable. AK takes a look at his first post-signing comments as a Rocket. * Speaking of centers on the move, Andrew Bynum and Mike Brown are going to be re-united in Cleveland. Because that worked out so well the first time around. We know Brown's a mensch. Any shot Bynum just doesn't remember Brown was his coach before? * We open the Twitter mailbag for a host of non-hoops related questions, from the proper time to shave one's head to movies we admit enjoying only with a sense of shame to something about "real vs. fake booty." Finally, great mishaps in press releases... (http://nextimpulsesports.com/2013/07/15/tweet-of-the-day-involves-a-playboy-mansion-party-and-james-hardon-of-the-rockets/) and future NBA-themed adult film star actors.  Land O'Lakers Podcast: Dwight Howard chooses the Rockets | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

For this show, we decided to think outside the box and focus the majority of conversation around Dwight Howard joining the Houston Rockets. A bold approach, for certain, but we've never been afraid to buck convention. The show can be heard by clicking on the module, and below is a breakdown of talking points. * When Dwight Howard was traded to the Lakers nearly a year ago, even with his fickle reputation acknowledged, the idea of him bolting felt insane. By the time he decided to jump ship, a separation felt inevitable. What went wrong for Howard and the Lakers? * According to multiple reports (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--rockets-give-dwight-howard-what-lakers--kobe-wouldn-t--unconditional-love-061137592.html), Kobe Bryant's pitch to Dwight during last week's meeting was more of a direct challenge than bro hug (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/9456642/nba-dwight-howard-where-do-los-angeles-lakers-go-here). Clearly, the result wasn't a center inspired. Did Kobe overstep his boundaries or does Dwight just not get it? * Did Jim Buss choose Mike D'Antoni over Howard (and, by extension, Phil Jackson)? * Speaking of Jimmy, his reputation among Laker fans is hardly rock solid. How much will it further suffer as a result of losing Dwight? * And speaking of Dwight, there's a prevalent narrative stating he got the hell outta Dodge because he couldn't handle the pressure that comes with being a Laker. Is this actually fair? * In any event, the Lakers have no choice but to move forward. With that in mind, their first free agent acquisition has been announced: Chris Kaman (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/9460382/chris-kaman-los-angeles-lakers-agree-one-year-deal)! Was this a good use of the entire mini mid-level exception? Is it a sign of the impending approach for filling out the remaining roster holes?

Land O’Lakers Podcast: Does Dwight Howard stay or go? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:26:36

Hope you had a chance to pitch Dwight Howard this week, because if you didn’t, it’s too late! So while Howard clears his head/weighs his future in Aspen — likely picking up one of these bad boys while he’s there (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41vvQEESlcL._SX342_.jpg) — we sat down for some jibber jab time to discuss it all. And after spending the opening moments recounting the less-than-Dickensian nature of our childhood, we hit the following high points… * The Lakers pitch to Dwight didn’t dwell on the past, and the incredible legacy of the franchise. Smart move, or a missed opportunity? * Which is actually the tougher decision, to stay or go? We react to a column by Ken Berger of CBSSports.com, expressing the (not uncommon) idea that re-upping with L.A. may be harder, at least initially, but would ultimately be more rewarding. “I just know that if he stays with the Lakers, he’ll put the NBA on notice that he’s finally figured it out. If he stays with the Lakers, he’ll take the first step toward repairing his image, proving his loyalty and entering the exclusive club of legends who’ve been made there,” Berger writes. “He’ll be signing up for something hard, something challenging to live up to. It isn’t easy to win championships and be great.” Is he right? * How does Kobe Bryant factor into all this? He says he’s playing for a few more years… does that make Howard’s return more or less likely? * Does he stay or does he go now? (If he goes will there be trouble? If he stays will it be double?) * We break down the two big trades of the week, involving the Clippers and the Knicks. One was great, one was awful, and if you don’t know which is which, it’s probably best you don’t run a team.  Land O'Lakers Podcast: Back-to-back titles for Miami and LeBron James, 2014 title odds, P-Jax the consultant | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

The 2012-2013 season, she is now officially 24 hours in the books... meaning we should waste no time in analyzing the 2013-2014 season! We take a look at what just went down, what lies ahead, and where the Lakers fit in. Among the talking points: * With a 95-86 Game 7 win over the San Antonio Spurs (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/boxscore?gid=2013062014), the Miami Heat successfully defended their title and LeBron James led the charge in spectacular fashion. (37 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, dagger J with under a minute remaining.) Does back-to-back titles mean the Heat roster, periodically vulnerable throughout the postseason, will require no tweaks for a Threepeat? Will LBJ's now-iconic Game 6 and 7 showings silence once and for all those still questioning whether he's "clutch?" * Was this the last realistic shot at a championship for the Duncan/Parker/Pop-era Spurs? * Vegas has the Heat as a 2-1 favorite to win the 2014 title, with the Lakers at 22-1, and squads like the Pacers, Clippers and Rockets in between. Sound about right, degenerate gamblers? * Phil Jackson is serving as a quasi-consultant of sorts for the Lakers (http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles/lakers/post/_/id/36763/phil-jackson-always-part-of-lakers-family)?  Land O’Lakers Podcast: Back-to-back titles for Miami and LeBron James, 2014 title odds, P-Jax the consultant | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:22:19

The 2012-2013 season, she is now officially 24 hours in the books… meaning we should waste no time in analyzing the 2013-2014 season! Will LBJ’s now-iconic Game 6 and 7 showings silence once and for all those still questioning whether he’s “clutch?” * Was this the last realistic shot at a championship for the Duncan/Parker/Pop-era Spurs? * Vegas has the Heat as a 2-1 favorite to win the 2014 title, with the Lakers at 22-1, and squads like the Pacers, Clippers and Rockets in between.  Podcast: How long will Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard remain Lakers? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:24:49

In precisely two weeks, free agents and teams will be able to converse, and the NBA fireworks will officially explode. Until then, we drop a little “waiting game” ear candy. Among the talking points… * Before proceeding any further, be aware I’ve been battling a cough, and it acts up without warning. Should you hear the word “tornado,” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKSIdx11DnE) immediately tear off your headphones to protect your ears. This is not a drill. * Per Ramona Shelburne, word has surfaced from Kamp Kobe that Bryant might play past his current contract, which ends after the 2014 season. Should this be the case, what’s Bryant’s market value at nearly 36? Would he be wise to take a deep pay cut? Is playing alongside Bryant a strong or weak selling point for 2014′s marquee free agents? * Along these lines, would the prospect of additional years alongside Kobe perhaps steer Dwight Howard towards another team? * Word around the campfire is Howard and CP3 would like to join forces, possibly as members of the Clippers (http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/9386386/chris-paul-dwight-howard-hoping-play-together-sources). That would require a sign-and-trade with the Lakers, who some think could be offered Blake Griffin and Eric Bledsoe in exchange. Is this a worthy haul? Would the Lakers ever trade a player of Howard’s caliber to their cross-building rivals? Should they? Click above to play, or just download the show here. Hope you enjoy it.
