 EPISODE 205 - Festival of Fear '11 (part 1) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:59:58

It's become an annual tradition. Each year Ted and Tony hit the road and check out Rue Morgue's Festival of Fear which comprises part of Fan Expo -- one of the world's foremost celebrations of horror / sci-fi / gaming / etc. The 2011 installment of the Expo was a massive event, and your hosts were there to cover the best of the fest. For the first time ever Festival of Fear coverage is being expanded into a podcast trilogy, packed with some of the most renowned names in horror and sci-fi! In the first part of our coverage we make the most of our travel time, catching up on a few recent releases (including the remake of Fright Night, the new Conan Flick, and Final Destination 5). While on the floor at the Expo, there's a panel with make-up great and horror fav Tom Savini, a lovely chat with Victoria Price - daughter of horror legend Vincent, and a visit with a previous HETC guest. These Festival of Fear episodes have always been popular with our listeners, and we hope you will enjoy our thorough coverage over the next few weeks... and you'll never believe the story that Ted and Tony have to tell following a chance encounter on Friday night -- but you'll have to wait until next week for that one.  EPISODE 204 - Let's Get Nasty | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:37:28

Video Nasties! The term brings to mind a lot of memories. The fondness of nostalgia to think of those video discoveries on rental shelves with the exciting cover art and titles with promises of the forbidden. But also the reminder of the heavy hand of censorship and the damage that can be done through paranoia and fear mongering. The video nasties film festival (our road to covering the entirety of the film catalogue labeled as nasty) kicks off with an episode dedicated to the history of the movement to enact the Video Recordings Act and the origin of the infamous "list". 1983 has proven to be an unfortunate pitfall of history for fans of horror, those of us who seek to be challenged by the offerings of the genre, as it marks a place and time where the lobbying efforts of a select few managed to criminalize the ownership of a movie. So it's a brief overview of the how's and why's of the video nasties and our first entry of the film festival: Maniac (1980), a true example of the low budget independent grunge horror/exploitation era of the late 70's / early 80'. The list as it stands today is comprised of 72 titles but it changed weekly for close to a year so our coverage will begin by covering the 'outliers' that stood outside of the 72 at the time of its publication (New York Ripper next week). So feel free to participate in our challenge to watch and discuss each and every title once known as a Video Nasty! Listener voicemails help us round things out with commentary on horror video games, horror anime, Harry Potter reaction and a modern Nasty Hobo With a Shotgun.  EPISODE 203 - Planet of the Apes Retrospective | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:06:28

We finally really did it... damn you! Damn you all to hell! It may always have been foretold by the sacred scrolls but it took a new chapter in the long and storied history of the Apes franchise for us to finally get to a retrospective episode. Your hosts are again joined by a special guest to discuss all (now) 7 installments of the Planet of the Apes films from the undeniable 1968 classic through to the impressive 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The original 5 chapter series of films attempted to stretch beyond the confines of their B-movie roots but whether they were ultimately successful is a discussed at length. The themes tackled in the films include racial allegories, anti-slavery, anti-war messages, inequalities in societyâ??s class structure, ethics of science, ethics of animal treatment, allegories for manâ??s treatment of man... and the list goes on. The concepts are admirable - the execution? Well... So rather than get mired in the minutia of factoids and trivia, the approach in the show is to reminisce about the films and what each of us perceive the strengths and weaknesses to be. Any proper retrospective of the subject must include the short lived live action and animated television series as well as the Tim Burton misfire(?) re-imagining from 2001. And of course... Rise! A surprising film that re-invigorates what many considered a dead property. Somewhere in the Universe, there has to be something better than man. Has to be!  EPISODE 202 - Game of Thrones | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:34:09

It's a trip to the mythical land of Westeros this week as things get very Etc. The recent conclusion to Game of Thrones, HBO's epic adaptation of the first chapter in the Song of Ice and Fire fantasy saga has inspired us to take a look back at the show and all of its mind-spinning complexities and intricate details. (A) Game of Thrones was difficult to define but has been compared to Lord of the Rings without the magic and battles. It is a show rife with political ambitions and betrayal, the clamouring of factions for control of the Iron Throne, the challenging of taboos in sex, language and violence, lush landscapes, impressive costume design, solid performances and dialogue... and zombies! The format is comprised of a segment of running approximately 45 minutes discussing initial reactions, setting up the layout of the world of Westeros, breaking down the key characters in play and having a general compare and contrast between the show and book. The spoilers in play are relatively mild before moving to the remainder of the show where full spoilers apply as we attempt to discuss each of the 10 episodes chronologically (with varying success). So please join us as we travel to the faraway land of fantasy storytelling, and remember... Winter is Coming!  EPISODE 201 - Pottermouth | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:40:52

Potter-mania has struck the Horroretc podcast? Well not exactly, but we do dedicate the main segment of this week's show to the franchise that shall not be named with a look back at the books and films that captivated so many over these past 14 years. It's a four host round-table event this week with an extra-special guest that once said they would never appear on the show. Now we understand that Harry Potter is truly non-horror, and that it may be a subject of specific taste. With that in mind the format of our discussion is a pretty wide-open back and forth affair touching on what made the series such a mega-hit, how the legacy may hold up for generations to come, highlight moments, confusing plot elements and above all...the unbelievable odds against a cast of 11 year old children seeing an 8 film movie franchise through to fruition. We do not get too deep into the mythos but be aware that with an open-floor format comes the possibility of spoilers! We do offer some horror talk too with Anthony at last catching up with Rec and Rec 2. It's a return to the rage-virus Spanish nightmare as your hosts relive these found footage films. All this and much more including a sneak peek at some of the show subjects lined up for the coming weeks. If the show topic is not to your tastes you are welcome to cast the Furnunculus spell on us which the Harry Potter wiki tells us causes the target to become covered in painful boils...(did someone really make a glossary of spells?).  EPISODE 200 - Wide World of Zombies! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:53:19

"The earth shall tremble, graves shall open... they shall come among the living as messengers of death and there shall be the nights of terror..." What better way to celebrate our biggest milestone yet than to return to our favorite genre of horror - zombies! The best way we could think of to thank everyone for helping us get here was to release our longest show ever packed to rotten, flesh eating teeth with zombie goodness. We travel the globe in search of zombie fare to share starting with a lengthy visit in Italy (The Beyond, House by the Cemetery, Burial Ground, Zombie Holocaust, Nightmare City) followed by films from Canada / China (Waking the Dead), Spain (Eaters: Rise of the Dead), France (La Horde), UK (Devils Playground), Germany (Rammbock: Siege of the Dead) and the US (Quarantine 2: The Terminal). We play an old fashioned game of random scenes with the uniquely animated film Night of the Living Dead: Re-animated, share a handful of zombie related articles and links all with multiple schlock corners sprinkled in along the way. The long running contests are finally brought to a close with a tantalizing tease of a special Horroretc project nearing completion. Things wind down with Christopher Walken reading a radio play rendition of a famous moment in the history of the show, a few highlights from the past and a massive thanks to everyone who is listening, communicating, spreading the word and generally making the podcast possible. For horror fans by horror fans is the motto - thanks for being there to hear the message.

EPISODE 199 - Making the Summer Watch List | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:37:14

Well, it's summer-time... and you know what that means - time to work on that reading list of Tolstoy, Shaw and Shakespeare right? Uh-uh... not this time kiddies! Your ever-resourceful pals at the Horror Etc Podcast has pulled together a list (or three) of the Top 100 Horror Movies of All Time! Of course it's all a matter of tastes, and your hosts launch into lively debates on that subject... but it's a great place to begin in order to take note of a few higher profile titles that you might have missed along the way. Ted and Tony were able to jot down a few "must-watch" titles each, and we're confident that you'll walk away with a couple of films you need to discover or re-visit this summer. Let us know what's on your summer watch list! Naturally there's the usual off-topic banter, a review of the new Spiderman and The Thing trailers, talk of the new Evil Dead film, discussion of a new genre documentary Machete Maidens Unleashed and a few thank-you's to send out. Chillin' with some AC at studio Ted, this is a casual but fun and informative show... about 90 minutes of respite in anticipation of next week's milestone 200th episode mega-show!  EPISODE 198 - Superheroes Shouldn't Bald | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:11:29

Shut Up Crime! Itâ??s a trip into Etc territory this week as we take a look at a particularly specific subgenre of film: real life superheroes. In recent years there has been a rash of movies featuring similar themes of the everyman suiting up to fight crime with varying degrees of success. The crime fighters may not always be up to the task but the films featuring them have demonstrated a consistency worth discussing. From mega-budget studio features (Watchmen, Kick-Ass) to the ground level independent producers (Defendor, Special, Super), a range of titles have explored the messages behind the motivations of characters who have decided to try making a difference. The recent films comprising the majority of the episode discussion are led by a review of the history of this unique sub-genre including a debate on how Unbreakable fits based on the information the film gives us. There are several diversions along the way including an extended conversation on recent Evil Dead 4 news. Listening guide for moderate spoilers: Special (2006) 10:53 - 26:50 Defendor (2009) 26:50 - 42:44 Watchmen (2009) 42:44 - 47:55 Confessions of a Superhero (2007) 47:55 - 57:41 Mirageman (2007) 57:41 - 1:04:14 Kick-Ass (2010) 1:01:14 - 1:24:49 Super (2010) 1:24:49 - 2:03:35 Note: heavy Super spoiler talk between 1:51:22 and 2:01:21 As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324 WWW.HORRORETC.COM

 EPISODE 196 - Back to the 80's: 1981 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:43:24

Horroretc climbs into the wayback machine once again for another trip back to the decade of excess, the 80's. The first Back to the 80's outing proved to be a lot of fun as we recollected and commented on the horror genre output of film in the year 1987. This time we travel even further back to exactly three decades in the past landing square in the heart of the slasher boom: 1981. Our destination proved to be another good year to revisitwith many iconic titles we have often mentioned as favorites (The Evil Dead, Scanners, The Prowler), as well as several entries your hosts made a note of tracking down for their own discovery (The Appointment, Strange Behaviour/Dead Kids). 1981 offered several trends including an outburst of werewolf films (An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Wolfen), several slasher films that fell exactly within the formula defined mold, a continuation of popularity in satanic/possession tales, and of course the first sequels to two of horror's longest running franchises (Friday the 13th part 2, Halloween 2). So buckle up for another oft requested trip to yesteryear down the misty road of nostalgia as we go back to the 80's once again. We have a listener submitted schlock corner video this week: Epic Rap Battles - Darth Vader vs. Hitler. We wrap up the show with some thank yous to hand out, a discussion of the unique (for it's production and distribution rather than for elements of the film itself) Australian underground thriller The Tunnel, and a massive breakthrough in Anthony's horror viewing lexicon... Texas Chainsaw Massacre! As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324 WWW.HORRORETC.COM

 EPISODE 195 - Monsterpiece Theatre | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:11:06

MONSTERPIECE THEATER It's the witching hour and its quiet enough in the catacombs that you can hear the dead stir in their graves... By candlelight sits a Mann sipping port, an old tome in his hands - the storyteller welcomes you to the library hearth! In an inspired moment, Tony flies solo this week and explores some of his literary favorites which have spawned cinematic horror throughout the years. There's Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, a pair of classics from Oscar Wilde (The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Canterville Ghost), as well as a detailed look at the legend of Sweeney Todd - and his legacy on screen. It's an eclectic one-off program this week which we hope will appeal to lovers of the classic macabre. In typical Horror Etc fashion this tale of terror starts with an Epilogue... let's just hope it's not yours. As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324

 EPISODE 194 - What We've Been Watching 4 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:41:32

Sorry... what did you say was in the trunk? It's another assortment of odds and ends as Tony and Ted wrap-up their catch-up on what they've been watching (see last week for part one). Keeping up with the summer blockbuster season we offer a redux on Super 8 talk with Anthony's perspective and get to the newest comic book action fare with a look at just what in the hell Green Lantern is all about. Then it's a television triple-bill as the ghoulish duo discuss Supernatural, and two gems from recent UK TV history: Marchlands and Ultraviolet. We get a little literary as we take a look at the newest adaptation of Oscar Wilde's Picture of Dorian Gray, and mix it up with the most recent animated Batman movie: Under the Red Hood. And just to prove the list was so eclectic we just had to give you more of What We've been Watching there's Phantom of the Ritz, John Carpenter's The Ward and...yep, Dead Hooker In A Trunk! This one really has to be seen to be appreciated but we try to give you the quick and dirty. As always, there are a few surprises, thank yous and banter over what's topical in the world of entertainment (HETC-style). Grab your 'to-do' list and a sponge dipped in chicken blood, as you'll certainly want to jot down (or scratch out) some new titles of note! Listening guide for moderate spoilers: Super 8 4:55 - 8:44 Ultraviolet 8:44 - 18:45 Supernatural (season 1) 18:45 - 25:36 Dead Hooker in a Trunk 25:36 - 38:14 Phantom of the Ritz 38:14 - 40:32 Marchlands 40:32 - 46:39 The Ward 46:39 - 1:02:26 Dorian Gray 1:02:26 - 1:06:40 Green Lantern 1:06:40 - 1:21:51 Batman: Under the Red Hood 1:21:51 - 1:30:59 Note: heavy The Ward spoiler talk between 58:41 and 1:01:45 As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324 WWW.HORRORETC.COM

 EPISODE 193 - What We've Been Watching 3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2:11:37

It's Netflix, Horror Etc style! On this weekâ??s episode Ted, Tony and Doug catch-up on their recent viewing lists, and itâ??s an assortment of some of the very best... and worst... of the seasonâ??s offerings. The summer blockbusters have already started to hit, and the crew is trying to keep up with the vast array of pirates, superheroes and giant aliens being paraded across theatre screens this year. Among the titles covered are Kenneth Branaughâ??s (!) thunderous Thor, J.J. Abram's brilliant love letter to the films of Steven Spielberg: Super 8, the newest installments in the Pirates of the Caribbean and X-Men franchises... and the dreadful Priest (Ted's back to his ranting ways). Also covered is the new Dark Sky release, Stake Land - a worthy gem bound to become a modern day classic of the genre and proof that life still exists in the vampire genre. There's the usual shtick (and a little serious discussion) along the way - and an insightful Schlock Corner from the Abrams School of Movie-Making. It's the best and worst of the summer (so far), and then some! Crack open a beer and settle in for some catch-up time with old friends. Listening guide for moderate spoilers: Thor 7:09 - 24:47 X-Men First Class 24:48 - 41:17 Pirates 4 44:34 - 50:37 Super 8 50:38 - 1:03:59 Priest 1:04:00 - 1:15:55 Stakeland 1:15:56 - 1:46:55 Note: heavy Stakeland spoiler talk between 1:39:07 and 1:45:35 As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324 WWW.HORRORETC.COM

EPISODE 192 - Kaiju For You (Godzilla Movies) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:09:04

Time to break out the old NES, and fire-up some Rampage! Godzilla - King of the Monsters, the gravest threat to humankind as we know it... er, CHAMPION and DEFENDOR of the human race -- and he sure can dance!?! Kaiju - or "strange beast"â?¦ giant monster movies - the cinema has been filled with them since the dawn of silent cinema. Our greatest cities have been trampled, flattened, and incinerated by a plethora of beasts, from Rodan to Mothra to great big green guy himself. Tony and Ted are joined on location by Bill, HETC listener and Kaiju cinema fanatic, for an affectionate look at the history of big, mean monster movies on the silver screen with an emphasis on the continuing output of Toho Studios. Oh, and in true Canadian fashion (so as to welcome this week's American guest)... hey also drink beer. Monster mayhem ensues!  EPISODE 191 - Sexism in Horror? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1:39:03

"All they want to see is demented madmen running around in ski masks hacking up young virgins" - Peter Vincent, 'Fright Night' Scream Queen, Final Girl, Femme Fatale...the portrayal of women in the horror genre is the subject of this week's discussion. For the majority of horror film's long history it can be reasonably argued that female characters have been sidelined to damsels in distress, a tool of the scriptwriter to further the evil of the antagonist or deliver the heroics of the male protagonist. There was an upheaval to these established constructs in the 1970's but things fell into the equally dismissive 'final girl' roles of the slasher subgenre. How far have we come, how does the scale balance today and where might gender roles shift in the years to come? All these questions and much more are debated with a special guest host in studio - Liz Strange, author of the Dark Kiss trilogy and devoted lifelong fan of the horror genre, who helps provide observations from a female perspective. We are proud to say this discussion ended up becoming one of our more involving and considered conversations and we invite everyone to weigh in on the subject with their thoughts. Following our extended segment discussing the gender roles of horror, we top things off with a couple of quick lists to recognize some of our personal favorite horror movie heroines and final girls. The single film covered in detail is the 2010 remake of I Spit on Your Grave (to close up the rape/revenge exploitation talk). Can they possibly come close to recreating the nightmare of the '78 original? Should they try? Tune in to find out. Music heard in the show this week: Main Theme - Buffy the Vampire Slayer Dance of the Witches - Witches of Eastwick End Titles - Drag Me To Hell Regan's Theme - Exorcist 2: The Heretic Eli's Theme - Let The Right One In As always we welcome your comments: horroretc@gmail.com Voicemail (206) 337-5324 WWW.HORRORETC.COM
