EPISODE 203 - Planet of the Apes Retrospective

Horroretc Podcast show

Summary: We finally really did it... damn you! Damn you all to hell! It may always have been foretold by the sacred scrolls but it took a new chapter in the long and storied history of the Apes franchise for us to finally get to a retrospective episode. Your hosts are again joined by a special guest to discuss all (now) 7 installments of the Planet of the Apes films from the undeniable 1968 classic through to the impressive 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The original 5 chapter series of films attempted to stretch beyond the confines of their B-movie roots but whether they were ultimately successful is a discussed at length. The themes tackled in the films include racial allegories, anti-slavery, anti-war messages, inequalities in societyâ??s class structure, ethics of science, ethics of animal treatment, allegories for manâ??s treatment of man... and the list goes on. The concepts are admirable - the execution? Well... So rather than get mired in the minutia of factoids and trivia, the approach in the show is to reminisce about the films and what each of us perceive the strengths and weaknesses to be. Any proper retrospective of the subject must include the short lived live action and animated television series as well as the Tim Burton misfire(?) re-imagining from 2001. And of course... Rise! A surprising film that re-invigorates what many considered a dead property. Somewhere in the Universe, there has to be something better than man. Has to be!
