EPISODE 196 - Back to the 80's: 1981

Horroretc Podcast show

Summary: Horroretc climbs into the wayback machine once again for another trip back to the decade of excess, the 80's. The first Back to the 80's outing proved to be a lot of fun as we recollected and commented on the horror genre output of film in the year 1987. This time we travel even further back to exactly three decades in the past landing square in the heart of the slasher boom: 1981. Our destination proved to be another good year to revisitwith many iconic titles we have often mentioned as favorites (The Evil Dead, Scanners, The Prowler), as well as several entries your hosts made a note of tracking down for their own discovery (The Appointment, Strange Behaviour/Dead Kids). 1981 offered several trends including an outburst of werewolf films (An American Werewolf in London, The Howling, Wolfen), several slasher films that fell exactly within the formula defined mold, a continuation of popularity in satanic/possession tales, and of course the first sequels to two of horror's longest running franchises (Friday the 13th part 2, Halloween 2). So buckle up for another oft requested trip to yesteryear down the misty road of nostalgia as we go back to the 80's once again. We have a listener submitted schlock corner video this week: Epic Rap Battles - Darth Vader vs. Hitler. We wrap up the show with some thank yous to hand out, a discussion of the unique (for it's production and distribution rather than for elements of the film itself) Australian underground thriller The Tunnel, and a massive breakthrough in Anthony's horror viewing lexicon...
