TweetGary Collins, MS was raised in the High Desert at the basin of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in a remote part of California. Gary enjoyed, and considers himself lucky to have grown up in a very small town experiencing fishing, hunting, and anything outdoors from a very young age. He has been involved in organized sports, nutrition, and fitness for almost four decades. He is also an active follower and teacher of the self-reliant/survivalist/off the grid lifestyle. After an exciting career in military intelligence Collins worked for the U.S. State Department, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a Special Agent. His career took him around the world and gave him a unique perspective on not only how the United States, but the world is affected by our food, drug and healthcare policies. It can be safely said no one in the health and fitness industry has the inside knowledge and background that Collins has. He is a hybrid of a high intensity health expert, self sufficiency advocate and an investigator rolled into one. Gary now lives off-the-grid part of the year in a remote area of NE Washington State, and the other part of year exploring in his travel trailer with his trusty black lab Barney. Dave has been a member of the TSP audience dating back to 2008, and participates in the TSP Forum under the name, “Dave in Broadway NC.” In 2014, he began writing about the development of their homestead on the “Homesteading and Self Reliant Living” message board, and his subject, “Homestead Layout” now has over 20,000 views. Dave retired from the Army in October 2017, took a job as a senior manager, and left that position this past February to farm full time. Tweet As many of you know I have become a huge fan of aquaponics over the past two years, but if you said, what is the best thing about aquaponics, okay, I’d say fish and cool water gardens. Though if you said what is the best part about aquapnics for growing vegetables, I would say, two words, wicking beds.  I don’t really think I would be that big into aquaponics without them.  I would likely have one small system or just garden ponds.  Once I learned how to integrate the two, I was hooked. And yes, they go together like beer and pretzels, but i don’t always have pretzels with beer and you certainly don’t always need to have aquaponics with wicking beds, in fact most people that use them, don’t.   And the good news is as long as you design them right, if you ever want to add fish, it is just running a few pipes.
