Episode-2186- Homesteading, Side Hustles and More | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetThe sent of Autumn Olive in bloom, is one of those homestead rewards, that must be experienced to be understood. So I jumped on Zello today to get some potential show topics, and the dominant vein was homesteading, finding a homestead and making it profitable in some way seemed to be the common denominator, so I am going to try to make a show about both of those things today. Homesteading is a dream for many in the community, so I want to start out with a simple concept, “grow where you are planted”, there are some amazing examples of urban homesteading out there. Additionally think long and hard about being “way out there” if you want to have some sort of revenue generating activity on your homestead.  That usually requires other people, so unless your product/service is easily delivered across great distances being somewhere near other people, is a great idea. Join Me Today to Discuss… What actually makes a home, into a homestead What are the characteristics of a good homestead location Freedom – as you define it Climate – as you like it Value – solid investments have exit strategies Size – farms are not homesteads, remember that, an acre can wear you out Remember the permaculture lens, water, access, structure Neighbors – will they be a bother, can they be, see item one Opportunity – for that day job, for your kids, spouse, etc. Before we side hustle, may be we should self hustle Grow what you can use or store, not much more Determine all local resources that you can hunt/gather Develop a lifestyle that maximizes your life, minimizes your costs Automate, automate, automate Go slow, one or two projects at a time, less done right is better than more done wrong Some side hustle opportunities and how to think about them Remember that we are outside the system, aka, agorists Sometimes it is okay to loose money, usually it isn’t Defining the goals of your side hustle/s What to do with a butt load of hot peppers Thoughts on livestock, eggs, etc. Granddaddy made shine and Buddy Shoemaker made wine If you are gonna grow crops, grow a specialty crop Vacation cabins – solid idea! Selling fertility Plant propagation Workshops – not as easy as everyone thinks Crafting – build only what you can sell, use or use to sell Bees – bugs are worth more than honey Final thoughts Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum The Year 105 Walking To Freedom TspAz.com Biltong for Breakfast Only the Young – Song Facts Only the Young – Journey Sponsors of the Day Ridge Wallet Butcher Box Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. TweetSteve Storch is a renaissance man. He is of modern times, but retains a wealth of historical and spiritual wisdom. His energy and the company that contains it – Natural Science Organics – are responsible for the invention of the Vortex Brewer® compost tea system and some of the finest biological inoculants and mineral supplements on the planet. Exposed to the realities and potentials of the natural world from an early age, Storch has developed a healthy respect for the mechanisms of living systems and a penetrating insight into how to work with them. He now creates and lives with his family on a certified organic and BioDynamic farm in East End Long Island that has been farmed undisturbed for over 350 years. Storch utilizes the teachings of philosopher and scientist Rudolf Steiner, who in 1924 gave a series of lectures outlining biodynamic farming principles that can now be found in a work called The Agriculture Course, a must read for anyone interested in plants or gardening. He joins us today to discuss soil biology, biodynamic farming and the vortex brewer.  Episode-2180- Growing Children in the Garden | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Tweet No we won’t be talking about planting little Timmy and little Tammy seeds in the garden but rather how gardening can plant seeds of knowledge, compassion, resiliency and skills in our children.  One of my true heroes in the world is Geoff Lawton and Geoff made a statement that sounds almost absurd in some ways… All the world’s problems can be solved in a garden! Even I balked a bit at that statement at first, then stepped back and said well, metaphorically is how he means it.  But I realized when I looked at how he said it, he was dead serious.  So I stepped way back and said, is this statement true. When I did so I realized you had to look at it though the right lens.  No one thing is generally sufficient to fix any major problem, so a true solution is one that sets things in motion.  It is that initial motion that creates inertia and that provides an opportunity for more things to be done, and in the end the problem is solved or mitigated as much as can be done at the time.  So true solutions are the catalyst, the spark of a solution, that create something akin to a trophic cascade. What is a trophic cascade, it is when a small change creates powerful indirect interactions that can control or change entire ecosystems.  A classic example is how the reintroduction of wolves changed the course of rivers in Yellowstone. So today we will ask the question, if a few packs of wolves can cause life to explode and a river to moderate and change its course, what might be the effect of teaching our children, how to do something as simple as grow a garden. Join Me Today to Discuss… Can we really solve the word’s problem with a garden What is a trophic cascade and how can we hope to create one What happens when a child learns about gardening They learn patience They learn actions have concequences They learn to feed themselves and others They learn to recognize patterns They learn to solve problems They learn the value of hard work They learn that all living things have a place in our world They learn that everything in life is a cycle They learn that some things are beyond your control They learn to teach They learn how to find answers from elders, literature, etc. They learn a hundred more things How can this create a trophic cascade? The difference between solving a problem and setting a solution in motion Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum The Year 109 Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online Grandaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Information Biltong for Breakfast Under Pressure – Queen Under Pressure A-Capella – Queen Sponsor of the Day ButcherBox Harvest Eating Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2177- Ben Fetterman on Odyssey of the Mind | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetBen Fetterman, better known as Southpaw Ben from the history segment, is a sophomore Plant Science student at Penn State University. He competed in Odyssey of the Mind for 4 years in high school, including one trip to the World Finals competition and 3 times to the Pennsylvania state finals . The creative-thinking process is nurtured and developed as a problem-solving tool. Students of all types will find something that will appeal to them. The fun of participation leads to an elevated interest in regular classroom curricula. Teachers have a program to further provide students with a well-rounded education.  Episode-2176- Bug Out Trailers with Spirko and Harris – Part 4 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Tweet Today Steven Harris and I answer your questions on Bug Out Trailers.  Big trailers, small trailers, what to put in them, what to have as an electrical system. Using cargo trailers as an emergency shelter and camper. Toilets in these trailers, storage and transportation of water for consumption and hygiene. This is the third in a multi part series that began with Episode-2117- Steven Harris and Jack Spirko on Bug Out Trailers.  As this is clearly going to become a multi episode series I have created the tag BOT Shows so that all of them can be found at one location. The response to the first in the series was overwhelming, Steve compiled and sent me 14 pages of questions, I printed it out and it feels like a small book, and these are just questions and a few notes here and there.  So we are going to run about 1 hour and 15 minutes on the interview and break it into pieces parts over the next few months. In the body of your email first tell me the council member your question is for. Second ask your question concisely in one to two sentences maximum. Third any and all details after that. This is the formula to give you the best chance of getting on the air. I do what I can to get as many of your questions as possible on the air but can’t always get to all of them. Our council is made of a wide variety of experts in everything from the tactical to the practical and everything in between.
