 Episode-2209- Understanding the Canine Brain | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Tweet I have done shows on training dogs before, likely the best one was Episode-1797- Training Dogs to Fit in on the Homestead.  Today’s show is in that vein but not really about training, rather how to understand dogs so you are a better trainer and companion to your dogs. I want to say as well today, that I don’t consider myself a dog professional, a dog psychologist, a dogologist, a dog savant, etc.  I do consider myself to be a “dog person” or in my wife’s misspoken term a “dog animal” (yea she really said that once). By this I mean I have what people perceive as a “way with dogs”.  Dogs that won’t listen to others will often listen to me almost instantly.  Dogs that do not trust strangers will often trust me fairly quickly etc.  This is something many people consider a “gift” but it is really just an understanding.  In short I know how dogs think, so unless the dog is just an asshole dog (they do exist), someone has really ruined the dog or the dog is practically feral, I can generally instantly form a bond with it. Tune in Today to Learn… Wild canine pack structure and why it isn’t an exact coralary How domestic dogs differ from say fully tame, raised from puppy wolves How every dog is “dangerous” Why your dog absolutely NEEDS you to be in charge for it to be happy What trainers really mean by “calm assertive energy” Some of my rules when training, correcting, and working with dogs No correction absent a connection Believe the dog will do as you want at all times Limit training to the dogs attention span Reward about 5 to 1 as a ratio of affection to food rewards Canine teeth do not touch human flesh (puppy and play exceptions) Don’t get angry the dog will know you are angry but not why Stop talking to your dog in a baby voice, most of the time anyway A command is a command, not a request Accept that some breeds have intrinsic characteristics (limitations) Dogs train each other, this is both good and bad Your job in 6 words (make success easy and failure difficult) Yes old dogs can learn new tricks, they usually want to Physical correction can be uncomfortable but should not be painful Don’t “shame a dog”, it is pointless and stupid, the dog doesn’t get it Never harm your relationship and trust with an animal, ever Final thoughts Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 120 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TspAz.com The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Forum – A new little site I started Biltong For Breakfast What if Dog’s Think We are Immortals The Story Behind When the Coast is Clear When the Coast is Clear – Jimmy Buffett Sponsors of the Day Bulk Ammo Self Reliance Magazine Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-75- TSP Rewind – The Practical and Holistic Approach to Food Storage | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetToday is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1494- The Practical and Holistic Approach to Food Storage and was first published on January 7th, 2015. The following are the original show notes from that episode. Confit – An Amazing Food that also Extends Storage Life. Today is a show about one of the fundamentals of modern survival philosophy, food storage.   Food storage is actually something that at one time was simply something everyone did.  Every home in America at one time seemed to have a root cellar full of canned goods. Today though food storage and the concept of survivalism or prepping is sensationalized and largely misunderstood.  Many tend to hear survivalist and at once envision a guy sitting on a ten year supply of military rations in a basement or bunker somewhere.  This image is hyped by media who simply wish to sell a story and worse is made up of journalists that live in a bubble of  “the government will fix our problems”.  The reality is that the bunker approach of military rations is both inaccurate and impractical. To worsen matters as preparedness has become more of a hot industry long term food has become a product marketed largely on fear vs. on the practical benefits it offers.  The reality is food storage doesn’t even require specially packaged 25 year stable products, though they can be useful in your food storage program.  The simple truth is that a simple 60-90 day supply of food in your home can help the average family deal with every day occurrences and most disasters they might ever expect to encounter. Join me today as we discuss… Why storing food is practical even if society never collapses Rule One – Eat what you store, store what you eat Keep a food journal Use “copy caning” Think with a “meal mentality” Store what “the kids” eat Store pet food as well Rule Two – Take advantage of opportunity buys Watch for sales Use coupons Pattern seasonal trends Understand Rule Three – Find local sources of food and partake of them Buy from local producers Learn about local seasonal opportunities Yes hunting and fishing (leveraged with rule five) Learn local wild edibles (there is always something) Rule Four – Use commercially prepared long term storables as extenders Find “meal ingredients” and store those Buy a can of this, a can of that, try stuff, stock what you like Learn about making “meals in a jar” Don’t go overboard on this stuff Rule Five – Become a producer of food and/or storables Gardens are great, perennials are even better Small livestock is a great option Consider aquaponics, hydroponics and things like microgreens Learn multiple storage techniques Flash freezing Dehydrating Jerky/Biltong Canning Smoking Confit Dry canning (I do it with jars and the vaccucanner) Producing storables from other foods is your silver bullet Become a great cook, stretch what others consider waste Where “rice and beans” fits in this mix Rule Six –  Seek a Holistic Solution None of these rules stand alone A formula is always more than the sum of its parts Take your time, ease into this as a “way of living” How storing food empowers you to live a better life Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1494 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom GenForward.com TSP Gear PermaEthos.com AgriTrue.com Harvest Eating – (sponsor of the day) Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) Free Rocket Mass heater Plans from Paul Wheaton (for only 24 hours) My Video on Biltong My Review of the Vaccucanner Podcast about Meals In A Jar with Jennifer Ess Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. TweetToday is an episode of TSP Rewind, commercial free versions of past podcast episodes. Today’s episode was originally, Episode-1568- 15 Underrated Plants for the Homestead and was first published on April 30, 2015. The following are the original show notes from that episode. An Elder Planted From a Single Rooted Cutting in Its’ Second Season. The Bamboo Stake is 6.5 Feet Tall! Yesterday we had a fascinating discussion on the Facebook Regarians page about Mulberry, I know it is awesome, I am growing a lot of varieties but I didn’t realize how much it could really do.   In fact I considered just doing a show today called something like Magnificent Mulberries, because they do so much.  I simply realized though that I can’t take in enough on them this morning alone to do them justice, so that might come at a later date. I mean if you just begin to look into the above linked discussion the sheer volume of data is insane.  So I decided instead simply to include it in a list of really useful but underrated plants by homesteaders and permaculturists. What I tried to do with this list is be highly variable.  To provide things a person might grow for cattle or goats on a large scale but at the same time provide things that you might grow on a small lot.   Most not all but most of these you will have heard of before.  It isn’t that they are unknowing just that their full usefulness is largely unknown. Join Me Today As We Discuss… The marvelous mulberry The elderberry, it is for more than just wine Lemon balm, stop trying to grow citrus grow the flavor Blackberry, so many uses, it will shock you Medlar, what, med what, you will really like this one Wild garlic, wild onion and garlic and onion chives Lavender it is more then just something that smells nice Jujube tough as nails, storable, highly sought by some Roses wild varieties and old varieties Native persimmon not just for people Jute Mallow edible, naturalizes, asks almost nothing in return Lambsquarters eat it when it is small, mulch it when it gets too big Amaranth the seed is one yield the leaf is often a better one Bee Balm you get tea, you get beneficial insects and it won’t die Mints come one come all, from tea to candy, to salads to good adult beverages Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade The Year 1568 Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear Safecastle Royal – (sponsor of the day) Bulk Ammo – (sponsor of the day) 12 Things to Do With Lemon Balm Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. Today’s episode was originally, Episode-426- Developing Survival Knowledge While Camping and was first published on April 24, 2012. The following are the original show notes from that episode. My view on survival planning is that running out into the forest to hide if the shit hits the fan is generally a very bad move, well in most situations.  Today though we are going to look at camping in another light.  When you camp you deal with out a lot of the conveniences we tend to take for granted, families communicate better (sometimes by force) and opportunities for leaning and contingency plan development present themselves.  Episode-2205- Modern Homesteading as Modern Survival Living | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Tweet Today’s show discusses the concept of homesteading as a lifestyle design component and how that relates to preparedness.  On the surface this seems obvious enough, most homesteaders grow food, food is a key component of survival so isn’t that enough.  Well, I actually do think free high quality food from your back yard is enough, but that don’t mean it is all that you get from homesteading. Also today while I am not specifically talking about “urban homesteading” I am really going to confine my dicussion to things that will by and large work anywhere that you have even a typical postage stamp sized lawn.  That said I can’t make your spouse agree or your HOA blue hairs go away.
