Episode-2202- Libertarianism, Anarchism and Resource Conservation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Tweet Andrew Anderson is a lifelong musician and songwriter (see andrewanderson.bandcamp.com), a rookie first responder and wild land firefighter, a wannabe helicopter pilot inching ever so slowly toward a private rating, a former corrections officer, a father of two, a husband, and a halfway decent cook. He has a habit of commenting on politics when he ought to refrain from such activities. He has traveled all over this country more than a few times and has had a lifelong love affair with hunting and fishing, but mostly hunting. Andrew started his blog the Taking Game Journal in 2016 sharing stories, opinion and information. His libertarian leaning philosophy has felt at odds at times with the conservation programs he supports which has led to some writing on the subject of libertarianism and conservation. He joins to answer the question, are libertarianism and anarchism compatible with wildlife and resource management.  Episode-2201- Lyn Ulbricht on Silk Road Going to the Supreme Court | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Tweet Lyn Ulbricht is a political activist and advocate for individual freedom, privacy and criminal justice reform. She is also the mother of Ross Ulbricht, who was sentenced to double life without parole for all non-violent charges associated with his role in the Silk Road website. This was a “dark web” marketplace designed to protect the privacy of its users. The site was product agnostic: buyers and sellers determined what was anonymously exchanged using the little-known currency bitcoin. This included both legal and illegal goods, including drugs, although involuntary things that created victims, such as child porn and stolen goods, were prohibited. Ross has petitioned the Supreme Court to hear his case on important and far-reaching Fourth and Sixth Amendment issues. Having seen her only son incarcerated for life after a trial riddled with proven corruption, Lyn is dedicated to fighting not only for Ross’ freedom, but for the thousands who have been victimized by our flawed criminal justice system and the drug war. She strives to direct awareness to the important precedents being set with Ross’s high-profile case, issues that will impact the freedom and privacy in the digital age. Lyn has spoken at numerous events in several countries; appeared on many TV, radio and podcast shows— including Reason TV, CNN, HuffPost Live and Fox; and been interviewed by major and alternative media, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Buzzfeed, John Stossel and The Guardian. She is also prominently featured in the documentary Deep Web. When not working to raise awareness, Lyn focuses on raising funds for Ross’ legal fight through www.freeross.org Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum The Year 118 Walking To Freedom TSP Gear PermaEthos.com TspAz.com – support TSP when you shop on Online Grandaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Information Biltong For Breakfast Big Yellow Taxi on Song Facts Big Yellow Taxi – Counting Crows Sponsor of the Day ButcherBox J.M.  Episode-2200- Bug Out Trailers with Spirko and Harris – Part 5 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetJust In Case you Thought this was a New Idea Today Steven Harris and I answer your questions on Bug Out Trailers.  Big trailers, small trailers, what to put in them, what to have as an electrical system. Using cargo trailers as an emergency shelter and camper. Toilets in these trailers, storage and transportation of water for consumption and hygiene. This is the fith in a multi part series that began with Episode-2117- Steven Harris and Jack Spirko on Bug Out Trailers.  As this is clearly going to become a multi episode series I have created the tag BOT Shows so that all of them can be found at one location. The response to the first in the series was overwhelming, Steve compiled and sent me 14 pages of questions, I printed it out and it feels like a small book, and these are just questions and a few notes here and there.  So we are going to run about 1 hour and 15 minutes on the interview and break it into pieces parts over all of 2018.  Episode-2195- Growing Food and Balancing Regenerative with Pragmatism | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetSome Projects are Clearly Regenerative, Others Are Not So Clear One of my really good friends and a man I have huge respect for in the permaculture movement recently noted that paraphrasing here, “nothing or very little about aquaponics is regenerative”.  I both agree and disagree with this statement depending on how it is examined. Broader though there are many such dilemmas in the world of agriculture and permaculture today.  Take GMO for instance, while I am a staunch opponent of GMO, I can’t deny that GMO could be useful if properly used and not seen as a way to ignore soil health among other things. What about where you buy what you can’t grow, is organic really more regenerative or even less bad for the environment than conventional in most instances?  Well that is a big ass it depends isn’t it?  If you are hunting, fishing and growing your own meat, and even buying meat local, should you never buy conventional meat, due to simple necessity or perhaps a desire for something you can’t get another way? Say you take a piece of cattle panel and make a bean trellis with it, how long will it be before the calories from the beans will exceed the energy needed to make that panel, will it rust to the ground before that happens?  Is that bad if you do it, should you feel shamed for using a product that works, is inexpensive and lasts a long time? What about ocean fish, are they being over fished?  I think most honest people would say we are better off on managing that than say 40 years ago but still we are very much over fishing.  Worse while the US has a lot of common sense controls on fishing, we often just buy from nations that don’t, offshoring our damage? So now full circle, say we have that aquaponics system, we produce 25 fish meals for our table a month we don’t buy from the market, well, how does that change our evaluation of aquaponics? More over, technology is not slowing down and while industry does a lot of damage, a cleaner energy future is coming, how does that impact all these things?  I will be doing sort of a self conversation with this concept today, challenging myself with questions and dilemmas like these, and would love to hear your thoughts on them in the comments below. Join Me Today to Discuss… Regenerative vs. sustainable vs. reduced impact – where do the lines blur Can a some what imperfect action have a far reaching net positive result Examining some examples of practices with an open mind GMOs, can any good come from them Soil conservation even with conventional farming Raising quail in stacked systems Aquaponics – what is the real impact The average garden, how much good does it really do Buying choices, local, organic, conventional, etc. Materials we use in our projects, metal, plastic, recycled, etc. Making cheap cider vs. all mash or extract beer from gain and hops What might the impacts of future technology be on much of this Should we revisit the idea of the 10 Percent Project Why I feel individual actions even imperfect ones have the largest impact Looking at your total impact vs. just individual components The real question is how do we make more people want to do these things Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum Walking To Freedom TSP Gear TspAz.com – Support TSP When You Shop Online The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Aquatics and Aquaponics Playlist Biltong for Breakfast How Long – Michael Schenker Sponsors of the Day Safecastle Royal Harvest Eating Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2191- Another Look at Small Batch Mead | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

TweetMaking Mead the Easy Way, One Gallon at a Time In 2015 I introduced the audience here to small batch mead, cider and wine making.  While all of those work well, it is mead that really shines in a small batch method of production. I developed my personal method after watching Michael Jordan (the Bee Whisper) make a one gallon batch at my workshop in 2015.  It was amazing to me that so little work could produce mead. I am a long time brewer and mead making have made beer and mead since 1995, so we are talking 23 years.  And I have always done 5-6 gallon batches which is the hobby standard.  With mead though one gallon batches seems to be the way to go.  Today I will give out the method and tips that I have developed in these three years. While Mike uses a coffee maker, I use an electric kettle.  I have developed my own methods and they work well for me.  Many pros and hobbyists alike find fault with a LOT of what I will tell you about today.  However, everyone that drinks my mead seems to like it.  Everything I have done with this method was designed to make it as simple as possible, eliminate any and everything I could and encourage others to make mead and allow for maximum experimentation with ingredients. In the end as your first batch is ready to bottle my method allows you to once a week, bottle a gallon, rack a gallon and make a gallon, with only 30 minutes of work per week.  I don’t think my method is the best method, I do think it may be the best method for the most people. Join me today to learn all about it. The basic method Use a one gallon fermenter Use 3 lbs of honey Use adjuncts of your choice Use two stains of yeast Use fermax yeast nutrient Leave head space about 15% of volume Ferment for about 30-45 days and rack Add filtered water to secondary and let fully clear Bottle Some of my favorite adjuncts/flavorings 3 Flowers Blend Apricot Pears Mulberry Elderberry Cucumber and Mint Ginger Autumn Olive Persimmon Cleaning and Sensitization my way – everyone disagrees Pasteurizing your adjuncts the easy way Why I don’t even use a hydrometer any more Why I seldom cold crash, but why I might Why I am fine using “everyday honey” and my favorite brand The joy of honey on the road and making mead from it Airlocks vs balloons Bottles for your mead and how I handle sensitization of those Why those who say I am wrong are actually right, sort of Why I think this is the best method for the most people Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum The Year 115 Walking To Freedom TspAz.com The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Forum – A new little site I started Binance.com Biltong for Breakfast The Sea Inside – Bob Seager Supplies for Mead Making and Resources Yeast Combo I Use Small Batch Racking Cain Fermax Yeast Nutrient Swing Top Bottles 2.5 Gallon Uline Carboy Style of Airlock I Prefer Salter Digital Scale Dutch Gold the Honey I Buy in Quantity – Listen to Show to Hear about The Recommended Alternative My Mead Making Playlist on Youtube Sponsors of the Day Bulk Ammo JM Bullion Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.  Episode-2190- Jack’s Cooking Hacks and Cheat Codes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 0:00:01

Tweet So as many of you know one of my passions in life is cooking.  To me it is more than just food, it’s understanding other cultures and history.  It is chemistry, biology and science as well.  And to me anyway cooking is fun, trying new things, making something simple not just taste good but look amazing. Take the picture above for instance.  To make that we just took a walk around our property.  We foraged some wild garlic flowers, some lambsquarters, nasturtium, pea tendrils and some veggies from our grow beds.  We made a salad with left over cut up chicken.  Simple, but why does it look so amazing, simply the arrangement.  I can tell you that it also tasted as good as it looked. So today I want to give away a bunch of what I call me “cheat codes”, these are various ingredients that add amazing flavor with minimal effort.  Additionally I feel if an ingredient is a “cheat code” it has to do more than just what it is intended to do, for instance sure you can make chipolte mayo for a taco with chipolte canned peppers, but you can also make a BBQ sauce for ribs that will blow your mind. I am also including “Jack Hacks”, little things I have learned over the years to make things work better or to make them easier to do.  Like how about a way to make perfect rice and not even give a damn about how much water you use.  Okay you are going to have to tune in for that. Join Me Today to Discuss… Why we should make cooking an essential life skill in America Some of my favorite “cheat codes and what to do with them” Better Than Bullion Broth Bases (love this stuff) Maldon Smoked Salt (link) Canned Chipolte Peppers (Brand I use, this one will likely cost less at the store) Ground dehydrated celery (I get mine from Harmony House) Curry Paste (link) Micro Greens (sunflower and daikon especially east to do) Yogurt Cheese (use flour sack towels to make this) Citrus Zest (use a microplane grater) Chili Garlic Oil (get these chilies strait from Thailand) Sumac Powder (some of the best I have found is this stuff) Saffron (expensive because it is worth it get it here) Dehydrated Onions (I get mine from Harmony House) Lemon Pepper (link) Miso and other pastes (Doenjang, Gochujang, Miso, Black Bean Paste) Some of my hacks Cook rice like you do pasta Infuse rice with flavor Par cook bacon that is going to used to wrap something Always do your marinades or brines in a zip top bag If a marinade has water and oil bases always add mustard Mix marinades in a ball jar Partially freeze any meat you want to grind or slice Steam your hard boiled eggs instead of boiling them (Alton Brown Hack) Grill fruit Use water from re-hydrated veggies Salted Steaks and Salted Squash (how to make zoodles) Salt aging steaks (Alton Brow Hack) Defrost meat on cast iron cookware – yes it works Use cast iron to start or finish sear food on the grill Soak skewers in a water bottle (Another Alton Brown Hack) Cook chicken bones/cores in a strainer (I love this pot and strainer from Ikea) Put a lemon in chicken stock The above also makes a great steamer Cook in the oven with a cooling rack and a baking pan Finally, do put some thought into presentation In the end just try stuff, it will often work out Resources for today’s show… Join the Members Brigade Join Our Forum The Year 110 Walking To Freedom TSP Gear TspAz.com – Support TSP When You Shop Online The Granddaddy’s Gun Club Bullhead Fishing Aquatics and Aquaponics Playlist Biltong for Breakfast What About Us – Pink Sponsors of the Day Western Botanicals Self Reliance Magazine Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon.
