Jack Hunter was an aide to Republican Presidential candidate Rand Paul. He helped Rand Paul write his book “The Tea Party Goes to Washington“. He resigned from Rand Paul’s staff when it was revealed that he was the Confederate Flag mask wearing Southern Avenger, the radio personality that espoused racist views on a local South Carolina station. This week Jack Hunter penned a mea culpa in The Daily Beast titled “The ‘Southern Avenger’ Repents: I Was Wrong About the Confederate Flag”. His piece was the talk on just about every cable and broadcast news network. I read it and simply said I hope he really gets it and that was that. I then watched Jack Hunter’s interview on All In with Chris Hayes. The bell went off in my head. I do not know Jack Hunter’s heart. All anyone can know going forward are his deeds. And if the reformed Southern Avenger who had a mindset that is still prevalent in this country can be a conduit for positive change, then I am willing to try.

The public fate of a confederate battle flag has conventional and social media on fire. In what appears to be a “tipping point” moment after the racially motivated mass murder in South Carolina, public sentiment has found widespread expression in #TakeItDown.  Citizens of the United States have rights, guaranteed by the First Amendment to the Constitution, to engage in freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion. The icon some consider a symbol of heritage is seen by others to be a symbol of a less than flattering moment in American history. In the aftermath of the massacre, Legislators elected to represent the citizens of States across America are discussing the public (not private) fate of that flag. Is that a violation of constitutional rights? Some very big business are getting in on the act, having decided to alter their product line to exclude that flag. Is this attention to the profit margin a violation of American constitutional rights? Many people say it is. Some of my best friends are outraged to the point of resigning themselves to a modern day civil war. They believe the constitution is dead. How is the constitution wounded when our elected do their jobs and profit makers do their jobs? IMHO there is a suspicious amount of drama in this conversation. It takes a lot of emotional capital (or baggage) to inspire war talk. We hear stories about the TPP and the power of multinational corporations. However, American independent family ranchers are living the nightmare. Huge agribusiness corporations want to end labeling of beef. They don’t want you to know where your food comes from because imported beef is cheaper, their profit are higher, and it allows them to exert greater control over the beef market. It’s the independent rancher who is proud of his American beef who gets hurt first because his premium quality beef has to compete against lower standard beef from cheaper countries. Foreign countries want to export beef to the U.S. and they object that labeling beef as “Made in the USA” puts them at a competitive disadvantage. A WTO tribunal agrees and Congress, under the thrall of agribusiness money and lobbying, won’t help our own citizens. It’s horrible now and it will be even worse under TPP. Recently an article was published by the Patriot Ledger, a media publication based in Quincy, MA.  The article was a discussion about a Holocaust survivor.  We always like to read stories about anyone who survived that horror.  We all know about the Holocaust. Or do we?  In my view, we must not know about it since the media continues to attribute some parts of the Holocaust against the people and, the country of Poland.  A people, and a nation, who deserve as much respect as any other on this earth, as an example of fighting for freedom while faced with the greatest odds against them. What has happened to our society where we refuse to acknowledge truth and facts and, instead decide to listen to our favorite TV personality no matter what they say?  Why does the media refuse to make corrections to stories they report when they are shown to be factually incorrect?  Is someone pulling strings?  Is there and agenda?  There must be.  Have you ever heard of the Polish Underground or the  heroes who were members of that movement and unit? Have you ever heard of the Warsaw uprising?  Do you know that Hitler ordered the German Army to annihilate the people of Poland off the face of the earth and the only reason why that failed was due the fight waged by the people, not any army, but the people of Poland? A battle the people of Poland waged alone.  Betrayed by the allies to Stalin and Communism one side and fighting against German tanks on the other.  In 2015 it is Poland that remains.   Three million Polish Jews were killed by Germany. THREE MILLION POLISH CATHOLICS WERE ALSO KILLED.  It was in GERMAN OCCUPIED POLAND that this happened. This morning we discuss this very important issue with Stefan Komar.  The son of Orlicz, the decorated member of the Polish Underground. A man who saved many lives including Jews. Most Americans will never know harm from ISIS or any Middle East terrorist. The terrorists we must fear most come from within. They come in many forms. Mark Gilbert has been a Coffee Party USA member since 2014. Since joining, he has become very involved, assisting in the start-up of the Campaigns and Actions Workgroup and then stepping into the lead when the need arose.  Through his efforts on that committee, he has taken a sponsorship role in setting up most of the party's monthly events including several book club programs.  Mark also supports the Newsroom as one of the group's bloggers, routinely posting thought provoking articles from his website. Mark is the author of four books on spiritual evolution, publishes the website Conscious Bridge and serves the home office of Centers for Spiritual Living (CSL) as their Global Services Coordinator.  He is an ordained minister with Centers for Spiritual Living  and served for 3 years as an assistant minister at one of their local communities, New Dawn Center for Spiritual Living in Aurora, Colorado. Mark served for over 33 years with the Federal government.  When he retired in 2009.   he was the Regional Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Denver Regional Office, overseeing the Medicare outreach and education activities of 10 mid-western and western states. Major accomplishments during his tenure with CMS included major roles in the implementation of the Senior Health Insurance Counseling Program, the 1-800-Medicare service and the Medicare Part D program. He is a Senior Fellow with the Council on Excellence in Government and was a member of the Federal Senior Executive Service. Mark  lives in Lakewood, Colorado, with his wife, Mary, and his chocolate lab, Harmony. He holds a BS in Psychology from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and a MA in Consciousness Studies from the Holmes Institute in Colorado.  He is the father of 5 grown children (including triplets) and 4 grandchildren. In March, Child Protective Service workers took Shona Banda’s 11-year-old son from her home, saying her use of medical marijuana put the child in danger. Last Friday Shona was charged with five felony counts of possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, manufacturing Tetrahydrocannabinol, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and one count of child endangerment. Banda faces a maximum of 30 years in prison. Attorney Sarah Swain joins me again to discuss the charges and the burden of proof the State must meet. Sarah is a serious advocate who has always questioned the fairness of our justice system. She saw her father, a war hero, disabled during the Vietnam War, along with many other veterans, get taken advantage of by the U.S. government and the Veteran’s Administration, twisting the system to prevent him from getting representation for his disability benefits, which were his rights. Her father taught her, as he struggled against a seemingly unbeatable opponent, to defy all odds to achieve the results you believe in. He eventually beat the system by representing himself and won. Special guest Steve Sarich, Executive Director, Cannabis Action Coalition will join us today. July 1, 2015 first day to legally use marijuana legally without a prescription in my home state of Oregon. The people used the ballot box to change the law. In a 69% voter turnout, legalization won 56.11% to 43.89%. In votes, that is 847,865 to 663,346. On the other hand, national figures like Chris Christie are all but declaring war on citizen sourced law that allows the use of marijuana. Governor Christie is not alone. Those with national and international concerns are quietly trying to deal with international treaty violations that would be easily solved if marijuana was no longer a Schedule I prohibited substance under federal law (although US Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department will allow Washington and Colorado to proceed unhindered). But the public rehtoric is about crime waves and declining moral values, claims that appear steadfast even in the face of the positive outcomes for legalization leaders Colorado and Washington (you on the east coast call it Washington State - we in the northwest call the nation’s capitol DC): tax income, reduced crime, even homicides and sexual assaults. So while we in Oregon see the clock is ticking down to THE BIG DAY, it appears that members of the anti legalization team are plotting to make this as difficult a transition of law as possible.
