The epics in December keep getting more epic with the movie responsible for making Gandalf a household name... Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring from 2001. Peter Jackson's first entry in his sprawling Tolkien universe gets us all familiar with the characters we will be spending the next two movies and 12 hours with, as well as setting the standard for today's fantasy film making contingent. Its the late 90's and an evil media mogul played by Johnathan has plans to rule the world using information and subterfuge rather than with guns and bombs. Oh he also happens to have guns and bombs too... along with henchmen and a submarine. This entry in the 007 movies hearkens back to the days of Roger Moore while taking future of the franchise into a tail spin that only another James Bond could save. Dalton. Timothy Dalton. Film History on Videotape's 007 series continues with the underrated License to Kill from 1989. This revenge spy adventure goes a bit off course from the regular formula with a darker and edgier take on what happens when you cross the legendary James Bond. With a great villain and a great title song, this entry in the 007 franchise stands out in a lot of respects, and is quite surprising if you're not familiar with it. Well he ends up in space trying to destroy an evil madman hell bent on re-populating the world with a genetic super race. There is also alot of campy comedy in it. Film History on Videotape continues our month of all things Presidential with Rob Reiner's The American President from 1995. The Commander in Chief gets a girlfriend (played by Annette Bening) in this Aaron Sorkin penned flick that blurs the lines between romance and political savage fart speak. Who says horror comedy is dead? This entry in our series of Horror Comedies for the month of October is a much looked over flick from 2006 called Slither. To cut to the chase its about when a small town becomes under attack by space worms that turn them into zombies. Sound pretty generic and par for the course? A great cast with a lot of clever humor and some really good gore and creature effects make all the difference. Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, and Michael Rooker star in former Troma director James Gunn's directorial debut and comes out swinging. Or slithering. Film History on Videotape continues our Horror Comedy month with Gremlins 2 from 1990. This sequel to the 1984 original has quite an interesting production history, taking 6 years and finally going back into the hands of the original director Joe Dante before making it to the big screen. Upon release it polarized audiences and critics alike with its cartoonish tone, over the top slapstick violence, self referential humor, and satire towards all things corporate and Hollywood. The series of Horrific Comedies continues with this 1985 indie horror comedy starring Jerffery Combs as the titular character who is convinced he can take and give life to others at his own will! This movie is what you would call a "cult classic" due to its legions of fans yet still goes under the radar with alot of folks. Killer gore effects, plenty of awkward funny moments and laughs, and of course the ample nudity, make Re-Animator an instant classic upon watching it.
