Double Impact show

Double Impact

Summary: Tristan + Greg are a couple of 90s kids from down under, on a mission to re-watch every movie that meant something from their childhood. Each episode they review a 'classic' film from the 80s or 90s, and determine how it stacks up in the modern era. We use the term classic very loosely.

Escape From New York (John Carpenter, 1981) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:07:43

093 - We are back in the land of Carpenter. We couldn't wait, so here we are - and what better second stop than his 1981 cult classic, Escape From New York. It's also our first Kurt Russell movie, if you can believe it!!! In this episode, we break down all the usuals, from origin story and plot synopsis to cultural relevance and legacy in 2020, as well as some deep dives into Kurt Russell child-stardom and Snake Plissken's role in the evolution of action hero's that would one day become the Lat Pack.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Guy Ritchie, 1998) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:14:25

092 - It's our first English movie! what took us so long? We have no excuse, apologies to all English friends of the show - but what an absolute belter to start with - Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. This one is VERY close to teenage Tristan & Greg's hearts, so there was a lot of pressure on the rewatch, so tune in to find out if it holds up in 2020 (and for the origin story, plot synopsis and deep dives into the unconventional cast).

 Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:26:57

091 - Yes, halloween was two days ago, but Halloween (1978) is forever - so let's keep it going! Full Disclosure, neither of us had actually seen this one before choosing it, and didn't quite realise what we signed up for, this isn't just another slasher movie, this is something special. So join us we deep dive into the wonderful world of John Carpenter, the origins of the film, and how it stacks up in 2020 after so so many sequels and reboots over the past 42 years. PS. if you hear some faint barking in the background that sounds like Seymour is just a spooky ghost.

 Timecop (Peter Hyams, 1994) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:19:55

090 - It's JCVD time again, and at this point in our journey we are at peak Box Office JCVD with what remains his highest grossing film of all time, 1994's Timecop. Later that same year we would be blessed with Street Fighter, but thats a discussion for another time. In the meantime, Timecop gives us more than enough to chew on - an origin that links back to a comic book, a new spin on time travel logic, and the rare blowdried mullet. But where does this stack up compared to other lat pack time travel movies like Terminator and Demolition Man? Listen and find out.

 Child's Play (Tom Holland, 1988) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:17:27

089 - it's Halloween season! Plus we are way overdue for some more Horror coverage, therefore CHUCKY! That's right, the film that sparked 6 sequels, a reboot, and a TV show currently in the works - 1988's Child's Play. It's also a 1988 film, so any friends of the show should know what to expect from Greg on this ep. Enjoy and HAPPY HALLOWEEN SPOOKY TIME to you all!!!!

 Police Academy (Hugh Wilson, 1984) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:46

088 - This one has been a long time coming. It holds a special place in all of our hearts. It's that movie we might have been slightly too young to see. Maybe our dad let us watch it with him, just a couple of years too early. Maybe it was a viewing at a mates house. Either way it was a special watch in our younger days. This is very much the Leisure Suit Larry of movies - but is that a good thing? Join us for a potentially controversial episode as we play hardball with a movie that really made us struggle. This episode was hard. Legit. But also, there is Michael Winslow. How bloody great is he? This and more, in this week's episode of Double Impact.

 Predator (John McTiernan, 1987), w/ Michael Schiavello | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:33:29

087 - We. Are. Finally. Doing. PREDATOR. And just to make this even more of an epic episode, we have very special guest, Michael Schiavello, AKA The Voice, AKA the most-watched-sports broadcaster in the world. We talk all of our usual segments, but we can't have Michael on the show without asking all of our burning questions about JCVD, Steven Seagal and Frank Dux - and holy moly does he deliver. So join us for 70% predator, 20% amazing behind the scenes stories of our aforementioned martial arts heroes, and 10% motivational speech.

 Memento (Christopher Nolan, 2000) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:23:47

086 - We've done it! Given it's now 20 years ago, we have opened up the year 2000, and what better way to ring in the year than a Nolan film, our first Nolan film - Memento. If you're already a friend of the show, you know Nolan can be a controversial topic for us (or at least one of us), so strap yourselves in because we are going to unpack that whole thing. If you're new to the show - don't worry about it, just join us like a fresh-faced, wide-eyed Guy Pearce and enjoy. Memento is the focus here, but we of course discuss the broader Nolan-verse, as well the Nolan brother (Jonathan), and indeed the Nolan tropes (so many dead wives). But where does this low-budget indie sit relative to the modern Nolan juggernauts? And how does it hold up today? These answers an more, ready for your ear holes now.

 Crocodile Dundee (Peter Fairman, 1986) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:23:13

085 - We are back with our first Aussie film in far too long - 1986’s Crocodile Dundee. This movie is a cultural icon, there's no denying it, but how does it hold up today? A pop cultural torpedo that put Australia on the map? Or just a stereotypical relic of the past? Maybe both? Too many questions? We dive deeeeeep into this thing to find the these answers and more - and along the way, break down the pretty bloody mind blowing path Paul Hogan took in getting this thing made in the first place.

 Lethal Weapon (Richard Donner, 1987) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:15:13

084 - Another buddy cop blockbuster this week. In fact, it's probably the one that has come to define the genre - 1987's Lethal Weapon. Join us as we break this thing down into digestible chunks of analysis, historical context, and a healthy fear of Mel Gibson. We deep dive into Shane Black's ongoing use of Xmas as an action movie backdrop, the films origin story, dissect the plot and capture its legacy - all in an effort to decide how it holds up in 2020.

Men In Black (Barry Sonnenfeld, 1997) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:19:21

083 - Can you believe it's taken us 83 episodes to get to a Will Smith movie? And while yes, it is technically a Will Smith movie, let's be honest, Men In Black is the Vincent D'Onofrio show. What. A. Performance. Of course we dive deep into the backstory of the film - from the director who started in porn, to the almost-cast David Schwimmer as Agent J (Yes, that's Will Smith's role. We're confused too), and ultimately unpack how it holds up in 2020.

Stand By Me (Rob Reiner, 1986) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:24:15

082 - "I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus, does anyone?". Man, does this movie hit you in the feels? It hits all the damn feels and it hits hard. That's why we are putting on our (relatively) serious faces for this episode - but while there may be slightly less lols per square inch than usual, we double down on the analysis. So join us as we break down the film's origin story, plot and legacy and ultimately discuss how this classic holds up for a couple of grown up kids from Sydney, 34 years after its initial release.

 Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:18:54

081 - Pumped for the new Bill & Ted movie? Of course you are, we all are, so why not travel back in time to where it all started with 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Full disclosure, for whatever reason, Bogus Journey was more present in our youth, but we still love us an excellent adventure. So buckle up and join us as we dive into the movie's back story, plot and legacy - and ultimately decide how it holds up in 2020.

 Hard Target (John Woo, 1993) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:11:44

080 - It's JCVD week again, and we are re-visiting his second movie from 1993 - Hard Target. This movie is HISTORIC, not just for the mullet, or the motorbike surfing, or rattlesnake-punching, but it's also the first Hollywood studio picture to be helmed by an Asian director. That's right, it's John Woo, in his first American picture, and while he doesn't fully unleash the Woo, his trademarks are all over this thing. Plus Wilford Brimley is in this, what else do you want? So join us as we unpick this pop-cultural artefact and break it down through a 2020 lens.

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:26:43

078 - Geez Louise it's a big movie this week. A sibling to Star Wars, and the love child of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg - we are of course talking about 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark. We delicately dust-off this cultural artefact with the thorough cultural lens that you've come to expect - from origin story through to legacy, we pull this thing apart and put it back together with all the care of a ruggedly handsome 1940s archeologist. We also recorded wayyyy past our bed times - so format might be a little looser than usual...
