Double Impact show

Double Impact

Summary: Tristan + Greg are a couple of 90s kids, on a mission to re-watch every movie that meant something from their childhood. Each episode they review a 'classic' film from the 80s or 90s, and determine how it stacks up in the modern era. We use the term classic very loosely.

122 - We are hitting the late 90s with a bit of a unique case - it's a movie, based on a TV show - but a TV show that is still running. The South Park movie came out during the 3rd season of South Park. It's now up to season 24. Does this mean the South Park movie is more relegated to the past? Tune in and find out!

 Big (Penny Marshall, 1988) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:13

121 - The movie that propelled Tom Hanks into the big time, as it were. It's also a movie that raises many questions in 2021. So... let's unpack it.

120 - Well here we are. Another JCVD week. We couldn't get out hands on The Quest in time, so we are covering the next JC joint, Maximum Risk.  The Wizard of Oz (1939) (May Madness Re-Release) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:06:40

Why are we re-releasing this episode? Because it's May Madness folks! Each week of May Madness we will re-release an episode we think pairs well with the movie of the week, and conveniently place it at the top of your feed. This week may seem a little left field, but the mysterious land of Oz certainly has some parallels with the mysterious land of Tune. Unconventional crew of heroes? Courage that was with them all along? You get the idea.

 Space Jam (Joe Pytka, 1996) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:21:27

119 - It's the final week of May Madness, and what better finale than the utter madness that is 1995's Space Jam. Move over Ernest P. Worrell, Space Jam takes the unquestionably high-brow sub-genre of movies based on TV ads to new heights. We go from Earth, to space to Tuneland which is (apparently underneath us?) and beyond. Bill Murray is there and Charles Barkley gets real sad - WHAT A MOVIE! Join us as we dissect this time capsule of a crossover-brand experiment, and decide how it holds up in 2021.

 Street Fighter (1994) (May Madness Re-Release) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:12:37

Why are we re-releasing this episode? Because it's May Madness folks! Each week of May Madness we will re-release an episode we think pairs well with the movie of the week, and conveniently place it at the top of your feed. This week, it was kind of a no-brainer right? What better time to compare and contrast two landmark fighting-game-movie-adaptations?

Mortal Kombat (Paul WS Anderson, 1995) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:26:48

118 - May Madness continues! How do I even introduce this movie? It's the one we saw as kids that people kinda think is good now? There's a new one that appears to be polarising? there was one in between that was terrible? We are talking of course about Mortal Kombat! But what makes a good Mortal Kombat film, or video game film for that matter? We unpack this very question along with many others, including several about whatever it is that Christopher Lambert is doing in this thing.

 Total Recall (1990) (May Madness Re-Release) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:25:13

Why are we re-releasing this episode? Because it's May Madness folks! Each week of May Madness we will re-release an episode we think pairs well with the movie of the week, and conveniently place it at the top of your feed. This week, we figured that the movie that launched Carolco into the lat pack stratosphere (latosphere?), would pair extremely well with another iconic Carolco joint, Total Recall. Enjoy!

 First Blood (Ted Kotcheff, 1982) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:24:11

117 - May Madness continues with the film that launched a bunch of seemingly unrelated and confusingly titled sequels - First Blood. This is the go to movie for anyone that rushes to the defence of Stallone's acting ability, and they wouldn't be wrong. This film plays to all of his strengths. It's one of those rare films that is so different to the broader franchise it's a part of, that it's always worth a second look. So join us as we break this thing down from its humble origins, to rewrites upon rewrites, to the legacy it created and ultimately, how it holds up today.

 Beetlejuice (1988) (May Madness Re-Release) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:15:32

Why are we re-releasing this episode? Because it's May Madness folks! Each week of May Madness we will re-release an episode we think pairs well with the movie of the week, and conveniently place it at the top of your feed. Batman and Beetlejuice have always been a pair in some respects - they came out a year apart from the creative minds and actions of Tim Burton & Michael Keaton - it just makes sense!

 Batman (Tim Burton, 1989) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:18:51

116 - We are back for week two if MAYYYYY MADNESSS folks, and it's a biggie. The second biggest movie in the world back in 1989 (and the biggest for the US domestically), it's Tim Burton's Batman! In many ways, this thing is the exact opposite of every super hero movie trend right now, so it's a fascinating one to unpack - and unpack it we do! From origin story, plot, and everything else you come to expect from our Double Impact detective work, we go pretty gosh darn deep on this one. Hope you enjoy!
