Double Impact

020 - Another 10 episodes means another JCVD special! This time around we are looking at the all singing all dancing 1989 classic, Kickboxer - or as we like to call it, Bloodsport 2.0. We also take a quick detour to chat through Van Damme’s lesser known other 1989 film, Cyborg (don’t worry JCVD nerds, we have you covered), but let’s be honest that doesn’t require its own stand alone episode (it’s a stinker).

019 - Is this a family movie? Is it a horror movie? who the hell knows, it just doesn't matter! DON'T BOX IT IN, GUYS! This is the tale of everyone's favourite Mogwai, Gizmo, and his mates causing a ruckus around town (and maybe some casual murder). Who is to blame - Gizmo? Consumerism? Foreigners? Americans? There are a few readings one can have of this 1984 oddball, but no matter which way you cut it, it's a bloody classic!

018 - What can we say about Weekend at Bernie's that hasn't already been said? Well, just over 54 minutes worth of stuff as it turns out. Despite holding a place in our collective hearts over the last 30 years (yes 30 years!), there isn't a tonne of commentary out there about this film. So consider this your one stop shop for all things Bernie - strap yourselves in and feel the Bern!

017 - This movie has it all; singing, dancing, a bird with human teeth - yes it's the 1992 Disney animated feature, Aladdin. With the reboot hitting our screens this week, we figured we would get topical and go back to the beginning. What goes into making the highest grossing movie of 1992? Take an Arabian tale from the year 1000, add a little Robin Williams, DJ's boyfriend from Full House, add a few bangers with a dash of racism, and you got yourself a picture - That's Hollywood, baby.

016 - Could a small independent film top Travolta and Willis's previous collab, 'Look Who's Talking 3'? The answer is yes. Very easily. Very, very very easily. Talking criminals proved much more compelling than talking babies and dogs - and rightly so. This movie did a lot. It changed the face of independent cinema, it gave Samuel L Jackson the platform he needed to become Samuel L Jackson, and inspired wannabe film students and Tarantino-copycats from around the world.

015 - Do you know what album sold over 12 million copies in 1994? That's right, the Forrest Gump soundtrack. This thing was ridiculously huge, swept the oscars and remains endlessly quotable today - but is it actually any good? Or is it just an empty vessel for 'member berry delivery?

014 - From one organised crime film to another. From the Mob, to the Foot. Yes, it's 1990's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Turtlemania was massive in our youth, but how did it all start? Where the hell did these turtles come from and why did we love them so much? We look at the gritty origins of these gritty turtles in their first and grittiest film. Gritty.

013 - Let's. Get. Serious. We look at our first Scorsese film, Goodfellas. We put on our film student hats (we are not film students, but we do have hats), and feast on this delicious audio visual dish from all kinds of angles. From Scorsese's use of music in film, to Joe Pesci's use of music in life that no one has ever heard. Also Tristan's mic wigs out about 52 mins in and no one knows why. Oops.

012 - How many female legends can you fit into one motion picture? This is the question 'A League of Their Own' attempts to answer. This was a family favourite in both of our households growing up, and is a fascinating watch in 2019 for all the reasons you might expect. We go deep on its origins and its maestro, Penny Marshall, and uncover that the story of this film getting made ain't all that different than the story it's trying to tell. All this plus bad John Lovitz impressions!

011 - Given the release of the Pet Sematary reboot, we decided to take things back to 1989 and take another look at the original. In our first ever BONUS MINISODE, we take a whistle stop tour through the Stephen King-obsessed late 80s, and meet a family that really should have just built a damn fence, Honestly, a fence would have fixed all their problems. Anyway, they didn't, and evil ensued.

010 - For our 10th episode we finally cover our first JCVD picture - THE first JCVD picture - Bloodsport! While we're at it, we should mention that every 10th episode of 'Double Impact' will look at a Jean-Claude Van Dam movie in chronological order. 009 - Today we're talking about the great Eddie Murphy as Ahkwel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop. The film is the OG action comedy. This thing is loaded with killer performances, from Murphy, Reinhold and Pinchot and more, but we also dive into the bizarre road this film took in being made. We mean it. It is truly bizarre.

008 - Join us on a journey through time and space as we go back to '86 and dive into the wonderful world of Jim Henson's Labyrinth. We go deep on the muppet-man's most twisted of tales leaving no stone unturned - We talk puppetry, we talk muppetry, and we of course talk Davis Bowie's crotch-etry.

007 - What better movie for our 007th episode than the 90s classic, Goldeneye? It's the film that reinvigorated a franchise, and the game that triggered the 'Nintendo thumb' epidemic of '97 - but how does the Brosnan era stack up against the Craig era?
