Double Impact

Summary: Tristan + Greg are a couple of 90s kids from down under, on a mission to re-watch every movie that meant something from their childhood. Each episode they review a 'classic' film from the 80s or 90s, and determine how it stacks up in the modern era. We use the term classic very loosely.

 Demolition Man (1993) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:02:10

035 - It's our first Stallone movie, AND our first Snipes movie. It's criminal that it's taken us this long, but what a great entry point for a chat about these two lat pack stalwarts. This picture is a bit of an oddball: part sci-fi, part satire, part full-blown lat pack action, this didn't open to great reviews back in the day, but is that really fair? looking at it's sci-fi merits, there are a number of future-predictions that this film made that are relatively on-point (seashells aside). Also, Dennis Leary. Remember Dennis Leary? He's in this, being all 'Dennis Leary' and stuff.

 Encino Man (1992) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:46

034 - This one is a real historical artefact, so to speak, and went by many names; Encino Man, California Man, or even El hombre de California, depending on where you are from. It's the film that made Brendan Fraser a superstar, but it's also the film responsible for introducing Pauly Shore to the world, in what would turn out to be a relatively short-term relationship. Similarly, the soundtrack facilitated an even shorter relationship with Right Said Fred. But what about the movie itself? Does it have the long term appeal that holds up today? Join us thaw out this 1992 time capsule and break it down for the new era.

 A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:06:37

033 - This week's episode is a real change of pace - we are entering the world of Horror with Wes Craven's 'A Nightmare on Elm Street'. It turns out Freddy offers up great fodder for the old poddy here, there is actually a LOT to unpack - from Craven's creepy inspiration behind the script, to the absurdly massive legacy this film has left behind - as usual, we'll cover all of this and more. We know some of our listeners aren't big into to horror, but don't worry, we do keep it relatively light for a conversation about a child murderer (aside from a spooky story from Tristan's childhood).

 Last Action Hero (1993) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:09

032 - This is a juicy one. This might be the most polarising movie we have covered to-date. To some, this is another Arnie classic from their childhood, to others, this film is a crime against cinema. In hindsight, the meta idea at the heart of this movie is seemingly ahead of its time, but does the execution deliver on this pretty-clever premise? Join us for a discussion that's really a tale two films - the one that got written, and the one that got made - as it turns out, they don't have a lot in common.

 Con Air (1997) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:01:00

031 - It seems a crime that it has taken this long to get to a Nicolas Cage movie, but we kick of our first ever Cage-cast with a bang, digging into the iconic, Con Air. This was an interesting time for Cage, a turning point from quirky dramatic and comedic actor, to action star / fantastic weirdo, with Face / Off, The Rock, and this little gem coming out all within 14 months of each other - what a time to be alive! Does this movie hold up? Is it the prototype for the modern Bay-era blockbuster? Or simply a strange Forrest Gump spin-off? Should Cameron Poe's hair have receded much more after 10 years in prison? These are big questions, and we aren't afraid to go there.

 Lionheart / a.k.a. Wrong Bet (1990) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:12

030 - A big change of pace this week as we delve back into the world of Jean-Claude Van Damme. Why? Because every 10th episode of this very podcast will be dedicated to ‘the muscles from Brussels’, so just get on board. This movie is an interesting one, and goes by many names - Lionheart, Wrong Bet, AWOL, Full Contact, Lyon - but can you call it a classic? This next chapter in our ongoing JCVD saga explores the star’s more serious acting aspirations, his tendency toward bromantic themes, and we explore his place within the broader latpack ecosystem.

 Back to the Future (1985) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:16:22

029 - We are hitting another big 80s number this week. Everyone's favourite incest teen adventure comedy - Back to the Future. It doesn't get bigger than this one. The movie so big it made a notorious failure of car famous, a legacy so enduring we are still seeing the fruits of its influence with pop culture icons like Rick & Morty. And the cast, good lord, the cast! Could this be the most perfectly cast film we have every covered? Yes, the answer is yes. Join as as we go deep on a classic and discuss how it came to be, and how it holds up in 2019.

 Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:45:19

028 - Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. That’s right, we are back in peak-80s, with peak-Hughes and peak-Broderick. This film is held dear by many, the world over (us included), and we do not take our podcasting duties here lightly. Join us as we get serious about one of the most cherished comedies of all time.

 Go (1999) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:57

027 - A non-linear storyline that stitches together the rave scene, the drug scene and Scott Wolf - this week's film is a true 1999 time-capsule. We are talking, of course, about the cult classic, 'Go'. We could spend the entire episode talking about the cast alone, and in fact, we almost do (William Fichtner is a lord), but as always, we are on the hunt for truth. Does Go stand on its own as a film in 2019, or is it best left in the past? Tune in and find out.

 Hook (1991) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:51:42

026 - A re-imagining of a classic via a soft reboot with a twist? What is this, 2019? No, it was 1991, where Steven Spielberg brought us his take on the boy who never grew up, all grown up! Yes, we are talking about Hook, the two-and-a-half hour long movie about a jerk dad who is a lawyer or something, with some Peter Pan stuff in the middle. In other words, there was a lot more in here than we remembered, and it raised a few questions - like why does everyone want to kiss Peter? Did Rufio get the justice he deserved? How many wax strips were involved in removing all of Robin William's body hair for this role? And ultimately, does this childhood classic hold up today?

 The Net (1995) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:00:00

025 - The year was 1995: the world was terrified of technology, but obsessed with Sandra Bullock - ipso facto, the cyber thriller 'The Net', was born. The Net is the ultimate tech-time-capsule that reminds us just how far technology, and Sandra Bullocks movie choices, have come in the last 24 years. We dive deep into the nostalgia of 90's internet and of course, deconstruct the number one cyber thriller of July, 1995.

 American Pie (1999) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:58:12

024 - This week we push the limits of our premise, looking at the year that was 1999, and the film that was a HUGE deal for us and our raging hormones, American Pie. Welcome to Double Impact: the Awkward Teenage Years. For the teen versions of ourselves, American Pie was more than a movie, it was an event, it was a cultural moment, it was a rite of passage - but how does it hold up today? Are we supposed to believe Chris Klein can sing? As usual we deep dive into the background on the film, the legacy of the film and in particular the cast, who all seemed like they were in line to be the next big things, but what happened? Is there an American Pie Curse?

 The Glimmer Man (1996) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:47:29

023 - We decided to mix things up a little this week and choose a film we had a feeling might be a real stinker in our 2019 adult eyes, The Glimmer Man. Spoiler alert: we were right. Let us be clear, you don’t have to watch the film to enjoy this episode - it’s really just a great vehicle within which to chat about all-round weird unit, Steven Seagal. The most interesting things about this movie are most certainly the things that that happened around it. We cover Seagal’s bizarre on set behaviour, his history of rubbing co-stars the wrong way and investigate some of the Hollywood and martial arts urban legends out there that surround this mysterious fellow.

 Commando (1985) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:48:34

022 - For our first foray into the wonderful world of Arnold, we are looking at a film that both set the template and kicked off the ‘Lat Pack’ era of action movies that we at Double Impact hold so dear. We also cover the great Arnold Vs Sly rivalry that this very film helped instigate, the secret link between this film and Chris Pratt, and we even manage to squeeze in some quick Estelle Getty chat - what more could you ask for? But while this film helped set the foundations for the action films that followed, does Commando stand on its own as a great film today? Or has the action world moved on?

 The Naked Gun (1988) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:02:01

021 - We have been looking forward to this one. We finally take a look at one of our childhood favourites starring in one of our childhood favourites; Leslie Nielsen in The Naked Gun. How did this serious actor even get into comedy? And how did he get so seriously funny? Was he the fart joke’s biggest fan? (Yes)
